By Killer7 Go To PostThink the defenders find it easier to carry that form. Much harder for the attackers, the standard of play is just so much worse.Yeah that’s my point.
Alvarez prob the only player who does well for both (prob even better for Argentina)
City are an incredible team. But they’re so good I think it difficult for their players to adapt to the international game…which is different. Of course I’d expect some managers would be able to make that transition, but…the standard of managers is also far below club level.
So. Make your peace. Foden doesn’t start for me now. It just doesn’t work…I just don’t blame him for it.
People are gonna be begging for Maguire and Rashford after a 2-1 QF loss to Italy and Clegg is going to laugh.

Forgot Palmer was an option. Bowen instead of him, Gordon and Eze y i k e s
Southgate is a worse manager than all 20 PL bosses including Tenk Hank.
But he’s fine for international football.

that's not an accurate translation. he's misinterpreting ten hag's use of the word gambling.
By n8 dogg Go To PostI don’t think he's a complex player. I don’t think that really exists. But he’s absolutely used to playing in a really complex system…which doesn’t exist in international football. So the end result is….this.
Gordon will stay wide to receive. He’ll run fast. He’ll either drive into the box or put a cross in. I think that works.
Guehi was pretty good today. Dealt with whatever came his way, hopefully he keeps it up.
Issue I have is out of the pair, none of them exactly lead a backline, so could struggle. Both are probably used to playing with a more commanding CB as the partner.

Absolutely. Lack of width in this team fucking KILLS it. Southgate just puts Trippier in to replace Shaw but changes nothing about the set up so Trippier just… does whatever.

Yep, Dias/Andersen.
Shaw/Maguire absences are as crucial as anything else imo.
Shaw -- Maguire -- Stones -- Walker

Congrats to the England lads here, I thought we played quite well, since I was expecting that you were going to batter us 0:4
I think there were times tonight in both half's where Bellingham was occupying the space that Kane is accustomed to dropping deeper into to get touches to jumpstart things going forward. Jude really is that attacking #10 that is nearly non-existent in most sides.
There's definitely room for Foden in the England team, unfortunately, that's Bellingham's position and he's damned good at it.
Like I get it, Foden on the left brings up playmaking opportunities, it also means another dangerous player for teams to mark, and you could see it by Serbia roughing him the fuck up when he gets the ball higher up the pitch.
It just doesnt work that well since his impetus is to not open up spaces by running into them. Whether that is due to Southgate's instructions or Foden just used to how City plays, I don't know.

By Flutter Go To PostA season of watching United prepared me for this England match. It's eerie right?
Like a mirror of a listless united.
Agree that TAA (in mid) and Foden do not work in this England team. We‘re much better when we go more direct and a midfield of Rice - Gallagher/Mainoo/Wharton - Bellingham is a much better balanced mid to keep the ball moving. Also TAA is a ridiculously good player but he’s just not a midfielder and should be kept away from there.

England going to waste another golden generation aren't they
They absolutely have the best squad in the world but look nowhere near as good as they should be.

If we had won by a big score last night, people would be saying it's irrevelant because it's not against a big team. Can't win.
I don't think England have the best squad in the world
And I don't think a good convincing win would have been a bad thing either

You’d take Pickford over Maignan?
Trippier over Hernandez?
Stones and Guehi over Upamecano and Saliba?
A midfield of Rice-TAA/Gallagher/Mainoo over whatever combination of Tchouameni, Camavinga, Rabiot, Kante?
I think when people say England have the best squad in the world, they mean we have lots of really good attacking players. We do. But that ignores huge issues this particular squad have in midfield and defence.
We also have a problem where 3 of our 5 best players (Foden, Bellingham, Kane) all want to operate in similar positions.
Absolutely need to go to what works for the team rather than shoehorn in individuals. That means someone more defensively diligent alongside Rice, and someone more direct who will stretch play on the left, especially in Shaw’s absence.
When people say England have a really good squad, they mean they're not reliant on players like Rabiot, Kante, Griezmann, or Giroud. Other teams might have better balance in their first XIs but as soon as they're making changes they're bringing on 35+ year olds or journeymen
Argentina lost to Saudi in the opening game and won the tournament.
Scaloni made some significant changes to the 11 iirc though, so there's that. There's obvious changes to make, but the best option involves dropping Foden...can I see Southgate doing it is the question.
and 'no' is the answer

He was benched for the opening 2 games of the WC in 2022, but then started every game after that.
He only started the first 2 games of the last euros, but he was a lot easier to drop then than he was now.
By Cleff Go To PostFabregas not having Richards covering for Foden.Ok yeah, I get it.
Spain won WC and Euros with Xavi and Iniesta.
Hard to say that Foden is a complex player for a complex team when you consider that. Either Southgate needs to start giving Foden more attacking responsibility, or Foden himself needs to start to try and taking the game into his hands.
By Willkiller Go To PostNo mate, the opposite happened 😂Still hardly speaks to a player that Southgate views as undroppable. Making the safe assumption that he also sucks against Denmark, I don't think he'll be starting once the knockouts start

Well, I hope so. I just fear he'll buy into the "how do you get the best out of Phil Foden?" question that everyone is asking.
Bellingham was tired about an hour yesterday, having Foden to come on in the 10 position for the last 30 mins of games seems like a fucking excellent option to me
Start Gomez (until Shaw is back), Gordon, Gallagher in place of Trippier, Foden, Alexander-Arnold. They’d be my changes. I’ll email Gaz now.
FoDog is a complete system player and yeah, thats got its drawbacks too. Systems can hide your deficiency.
A Rashford or Bowen type player gets far more of the tournament with how they stretch play and be devastating on the counter play.
having to ask how you get the best out of the premier league player of the year is nuts to me. And Micah capping so hard for a city player is not tweet worthy.

You literally, two lines up, just said Foden is a complete system player which has its drawbacks.
So...that's a pretty fair question to ask when he's playing in a very different team/system to the one he plays 50+ games a season with
Good morning lads, have a great week everyone.
Yes. Ben White in front of both.
Stones and Saliba (who doesn't start for France lmfao)
Yes.
