By Hixx Go To PostHonestly if Serbia haven't broken a record for fouls in this game I'll be amazed.Just looked up the Battle of Nuremberg match between Portugal and Germany. 21 fouls in total. Serbia committed 19 alone tonight.
I honestly reckon this was probably the hardest game in the group purely because of how Serbia would set up. Denmark will absolutely think they can beat us and play in a very different way to Serbia which we will probably enjoy more. Slovenia idk but I don't really care either.
Shit game though. Rice, Bellingham and Pickford were good... the rest invisible or actively poor. Kane had a few solid moments of holding it up but should have scored.

England plays like a team without a game plan.
You have possible the best midfield in Tourney, but not with TAA as midfielder. I would play Foden as 10 and Jude as 8, but there are other options as well.

We dropped Bellingham back a bit in the second half and brought Foden more central and it really did not work.
Southgate has no idea how to get Foden into this team. So he should stop trying. And I say that as a big Foden fan.

did you mean the Netherlands vs Portugal match, that was hilarious so many yellow and reds
Good first half hour gave way to a slugfest against a limited, thuggish team.
I think the main problem is most of our best players aren’t fit - Kane is very rusty, Saka was gassed after one half, Bellingham has had such a long season - but there are some very real squad cohesion issues too. Trippier and Guehi left side is a huge downgrade (in terms of what works for this side) from Shaw and Maguire.
Alexander-Arnold doesn’t have the positional sense in midfield for this to work; Serbia played a few line breaking passes that bypassed him easily and better teams might have taken advantage. We can (and should) mock Phillips and Henderson, but they provided something I think this team needs. We’d be fucking lost without Declan Rice, I’ll tell you that much. MOTM by a country mile.

I’d be inclined to say Gomez, Gallagher/Wharton and Gordon for Trippier, Trent and Foden. Gomez will add more solidity on that side and you aren’t losing width regardless because Trippier provides nothing; in fact, you’d gain it with the directness of Gordon.
Wharton just makes sense over TAA because he actually is a midfielder. Trent makes sense in a functional Liverpool side. Experimentation at an international tournament is not the time to do it.
Not sure what the gameplan was with Mainoo there. Just came on to press high. Weird.

Absolutely. It works for City for myriad reasons - Pep, obv, but the kind of striker Haaland is, the way they play their fullbacks… Foden looks better because of those things.
If Shaw was in the team he’d probably look better, but I just don’t think the profile of the side suits Foden.
Bellingham was Pogba-esque on the ball tonight. Well, almost.
He has lots of attributes Pogba didn't too.
He has lots of attributes Pogba didn't too.
On the Foden thing, I think he’s used to playing with a far…far better team than the England national team. He plays little flicks and balls that, for City, would probably have Rodri get on the end of but for England…nothing.
Trent isn’t a midfielder. I love Trent but we can’t shoehorn him into the midfield, he isn’t good there. If we had a really strong defence we could accommodate him, but we without that he shouldn’t be close to the 11.
Gallagher for TAA and Gordon for Foden would have been the subs I’d have made. I’m. Quite concerned he brought Bowen on tbh, even though he put in a great cross.

We’ve easily looked the weakest of the teams that have won so far.
Said it before the tournament (not on here lol #sayingitnow) but I’d be surprised if we got past the QFs. If we had Maguire and any sort of surety alongside Rice, I’d feel more confident.
Germany have to be favourites. Home nation. Best coach by a country mile (he and Spalletti the only real ones). Toni Kroos. Two big cunts at CB.

Was hoping Bowen was an emergency striker. Concerning he was on instead of Gordon or Eze lol

By n8 dogg Go To PostWe’ve easily looked the weakest of the teams that have won so far.Don’t have a clue how good Germany are. They haven’t looked amazing under Naglesmann but I 100% fully believe you can’t judge an international team until an international tournament. They looked good on Friday, but against a very poor Scotland side. No favourites atm for me. Far too small a sample size and the closest game with two somewhat matched sides has been Spain - Croatia.

Team still needs to find the right partner for Rice.
Think he'll go with Gallagher for the knockout games just for his energy and box to box running.
He's tried Mainoo against the better sides so far (Brazil and Belgium) so he could go with him again.
Foden doesn't really have a place in this team at the moment. Bellingham is all over the pitch and Kane drops often. Feel like we really need pace ok that LW rather than someone who likes to come inside. We had nothing coming down the left today. Will be different if we get Shaw back into the team.

Southgate need to make tough choices we're a top player might sit on the bench.
Reminds me a bit of golden English generation were you have 4 world class midfielders and you had to shoe horn them all in. Beckham was the obvious right midfielder, but one of Gerard/Scholes/Lampard had to be dropped. Instead one was put out on the left, other defensive 6 so they all could start, hardly ever worked well. (no balance)
But a lot of the current crop is still young so there is time to avoid that same error.

It's all your fault" talk. Like we've all been saying for ages, he needs to grow a pair and just sacrifice a player. If someone like Foden has to come off the bench, then so be it.

It’s Pep imo. I think City players are so drilled to play a certain way they struggle to adapt to the national team. Even Rodri is way less convincing for Spain.
Tell me a current City player that carries their form through to the national team. Ake??

Alvarez prob the only player who does well for both (prob even better for Argentina)
By Xpike Go To Postthe problem is the same as always with England

I think this is too simplistic. It’s international football. Is he really a worse coach than most of them there?
In his three tournaments, he’s made a semi-final (with Maguire, Young, Henderson, Alli, Lingard, Sterling, Rose, Dier all playing that semi), a final he lost on pens, and a QF they could and maybe should have won against the holders and finalists (who lost on pens themselves).
He has his flaws. He would have been a fucking awful choice to replace Ten Hag. But I think the people who criticise Southgate for every decision he makes often tend to be those who simultaneously think England have a squad capable of winning everything at a canter but also think half their players are shit.
Everyone thinks Pickford is shit. Everyone thinks Maguire is shit. There’s people in this thread who think Kane is nothing special lol.
On one hand, I think some criticisms have become often too hyperbolic. He’s the second most successful coach this team has ever had. The players clearly love him. I do not blame him for not sending England out to win games with a gung-ho attacking style like some whoppers in the media write every once in a while. When was the last time an international tournament was won by a side that did that? I genuinely can’t remember. Maybe Spain 2008? They were hugely dull 2010-12. Germany weren’t great beyond the Brazil game. Portugal 2016 dull. France 2018 super conservative. Italy 2020 the same. Argentina were ten workhorses and Messi.
Southgate is a bad game manager and is bad at subs (when I compare him to good managers who typically work in club football). I don’t think he is wildly different from most national coaches in that regard.

One of the first that went to young (16) to Chelski, but he survived in the end, because he was willing to take step down first.

System and game plan for me. Take that away from modern players and they have tendency to get lost on pitch.
Best playing national teams are those that rely on lot of players from one club. Recent, Spain (Barca/Real) and Germany almost all Bayern.
