Jones isn’t losing out to Grealish. He’s losing out to Wharton and Mainoo.
Maddison is unlucky to miss out, but he’s not going to be a difference maker in the way Grealish or Gordon can be, imo.

Jones didn't have a good end to the season, at all. Form dropped off a cliff after his injury, just like Maddison. It's fair.
By cashman Go To PostEngland is going to do this and then not only keep Harry Kane, who has never won a professional football competition in his life, on the team, but make him captain
Remarkable.

But still. As a stats person I am obliged to point out that Mainoo profiles as one of the worst midfielders in the league. He really ought to be left to develop instead of thrown in to the England setup.
he just won an fa cup for us against a litany of criminal scum so imho he should be made captain already

I have my concerns about Mainoo off the ball, and it is early to get him into the set up, but that can bear fruit when players are simply good enough. Rooney's best (and only great) international tournament was when he was a year younger than Mainoo. He's also performed well right until the very end of the season, which gives him the edge over Jones.
By Dazenheimer Go To PostWill be hilarious if Grealish is still going.Elliot had a better one than Jones too but Gareth being Gareth.
Maddison and Jones have had better seasons than him.
By Willkiller Go To PostWell that's as much of an argument as you're going to get against being a "stats person" tbh.I think if you went back and calculated some relevant individual stats for an 18 year old Rooney he would still look one of the stronger players in the league. He'd already had 2 full seasons by the Euros. If Mainoo was an Everton player like Rooney was, do you think anyone would be talking about him starting for England? He wouldn't be close.

But we have Wharton coming in from Palace after being at Bristol until January, and Southgate is prioritising him over players from Spurs and Liverpool. That argument doesn’t really hold water.

I'm not entirely sure that would be the case tbh, the Euros was where he exploded. I think he was also the type of player to really respond to that kind of pressure and environment though, it seemed to push him to a higher level which he then carried back into the league.
As for if he'd be in if he was playing for Everton...possibly not...BUT I do think it's fair to say the pressure cooker of being at Man U is different to being at Everton and is closer to the kind of thing you can expect on England international duty. Wharton is also in the provisional after half a season at Palace too, so perhaps he would anyway.
Wharton is beating out the hopeless Phillips to be backup to Rice. Mainoo ostensibly plays as a DM in united's setup but he isn't a natural one. You could just put someone like Ward-Prowse in there. If England were weak, I could understand including him over a Ward-Prowse just to give the fans something to hope for, but since they're strong you don't need to include a kid.
And he's not so good that you absolutely have to include him in the setup like you would for a Rooney-level player. Don't get me wrong, his stats for an 18 year old are impressive, but he's a long way from guaranteed superstar.

Arise Sir Kobbie
Another day, another chapter of the wonderful world of Porto's Life After Pinto da Costa.
Yesterday, a former Porto confirmed that he had loaned out more than 2M€ to the club a few days before the former president was voted out.
He is supposed to get paid in two installments in June and July with part of the money that Porto will get from UEFA but he is open to extend those deadlines. Not suspicious at all.
It's also been revealed that Francisco Conceição has a release clause of 30M€ (which he will get 20% of that) until the 15th of July. Reminder that Porto sold him to Ajax two seasons ago for 5M€, got him on loan last season and triggered his buy clause of 10.5M€, making him one of the best paid players in the country at 2.7M€ a year.
I'm fully expecting Francisco to leave in the summer, he is one of the most sellable Porto assets, should have a decent Euro's and there's also the little thing about him basically calling his new manager a traitor for taking the Porto job after being his father's assistant manager for many years.

I'm surprised Liverpool aren't on there given how vocal our owners have been about wanting FFP enforced. John Henry has even said that had he known that FFP wouldn't amount to anything, they wouldn't have bought Liverpool. But that's probably just hyperbole to try and put pressure on the authorities.

If the sportswashing bootlickers are Newcastle, Chelsea, Villa, and Everton, I'm guessing the defenders will be everyone except for the non-promoted sides. Maybe not Forest

To be clear, pretty sure only Chelsea have actually voiced actual support by writing their own criticism of the rules.
That Daily Mail article was pure speculation on the part of Villa and us. Villa were mentioned because City's owners and Villa's owners are friends apparently. And the article just said we'd stand to benefit from a rule change so assumed we'd be for it. Our actual good club sources have said we're not backing them and we're taking a neutral stance (which isn't good enough).
Obviously I'm not naïve to think it's because we're good guys in football, more likely we don't think City have a chance of overturning it so the huge negative PR would be for no gain. But still...
By JesalR Go To PostBarring someone paying Bruno's release clause (which I think is unlikely), it's going to be Wilson and/or Almiron most likely. Maybe someone comes in for a bid for Longstaff which we'd consider but that'll be it.

More tyranny of the majority.
Anyway everyone should remember this when a club threatens legal action over a wrong decision, and behaving like this system has been foisted upon them.
By Oddinho Go To PostLooks like the PL teams voted 19-1 to keep VARGood call. The only realistic call.
I guess it was never about actually scrapping it because there was never going to be the support, more so to generate serious discussion and, hopefully, meaningful changes.
