Via the Athletic, regarding Amorim:
The reports about Amorim — whose fitness coach at Sporting, Paulo Barreira, was a former Anfield staff member — caused a degree of annoyance at Liverpool, who did not want any candidate, such as Slot, thinking the job had been offered to anyone else. The reality is that Amorim, who was keen to move to the Premier League, did feature on Liverpool’s list, having scored well in much of the data analysis, but he was never a front-runner. Amorim’s agent Raul Costa came to Merseyside in early April but that trip was primarily to visit Luis Diaz, the Liverpool winger he also represents.
While impressed by his record, Edwards and Hughes had doubts about Amorim’s compatibility with the Liverpool job specifically.
Ruben Amorim was not favoured for the Liverpool job, despite widespread speculation (Emilio Andreoli/Getty Images)
They were unconvinced that his preference for a three-man central defence — shared by Alonso at Leverkusen, incidentally — would suit many of the players he would be working with. But more significant was a nagging concern about Amorim’s playing style. Sporting may have scored 96 goals in 34 league matches this season, but theirs is regarded as a slower style that is less front-foot — both in and out of possession.
There were similar conclusions about De Zerbi at Brighton and Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann. Like Amorim, De Zerbi was on a theoretical shortlist but not one of the first names on it. Playing style and compatibility with Liverpool were again considered to be a factor.

By Oddinho Go To PostI think Ancelotti should have them playing better football than they do over in Madrid, personally. The way they play has never really rung as being cowardly for me, because you don’t see them time-wasting on throw-ins and goal kicks the same way Arsenal do. But I wouldn’t use Ancelotti’s football as a beacon to aspire to. They have lived a charmed life in the champions league over his latest tenure there.
Lmao, you always think Arsenal are just this time wasting team. I don’t see us being worse than anyone else.
Being pragmatic allows you to get the best performance and result against anyone. Being setup well defensively and then using one of your strengths, counterattacking, is not cowardly.
This idea that there is only one correct way to play football is ridiculous. If Arsenal got smashed 5-0 at City you and everyone else would be laughing and calling us dumb. Same old Arsenal.
By Willkiller Go To PostSee what Rodri thinks about it:
Well he is an idiot.
We went there with a game plan, that probably was to win the game. But by sitting back and hitting them on the counter.
Almost worked.
Wonder when I'll stop thinking of Klopp as being Liverpool manager. First time we see Slot in the dugout presumably.

Being flexible would allow you to get the best result against anyone. Pragmatism is often just a euphemism for defensiveness or a boring play style, used as a deflection because it doesn't carry the same negative connotations. Football is entertainment. Managers have been fired, including Ancelotti, for being too "pragmatic" even when winning trophies. The best teams don't want to just win, they want to win in the most thrilling way possible.
I have plenty of praise for Arsenal this year. The team is exceptionally compact and exerts a level of control that rivals City's, and some of the players are just electric. And I would include Ben White in that list of top performers.
But if the team didn't have its flaws, it would have won the league, rather than City. Approaching difficult matches with "pragmatism" - ranging from overly defensive tactics, to time wasting on throw-ins and goal kicks, to things that look like they've got the match officials unprepared such as unzipping the goalkeepers gloves, wrestling defenders back to keep players onside, using offside players to body-block defenders in set pieces, only got them so far.
Bro we were literally 2 points away and won vs City and Liverpool
We lost the league because we didn't show up on winnable games vs West Ham, Fulham and Aston Villa

City had wobbles too. The also lost to Villa, lost at Wolves, drew at Palace, drew against Chelsea when they were at a low point, etc.
I'm not saying Arsenal aren't good. Plenty of times over the season I thought they would have been worthy title winners. But Arteta's tactics have always been "pragmatic", and I think that will be a hump he has to get over to win the biggest trophies. Have people forgot that famous clip of him telling the City players to foul the opposition as soon as there is a transition when he was coaching there?
We honestly just need better forwards, we can’t expect Saka to win us the game every time. Trossard was great and did his part, Kai really kicked off in the second half of the season, and Saka had a great season along with Ode… but everyone else in the attacking end was just sub par. Jesus had his moments but nowhere near where we need him.
So many games where we had plenty of chances with no end product.

I mean he's good enough to play as an 8 too, but he plays at the base of our midfield for sure. There's long been talk of us getting another 6 to push Bruno further up, but it's never really came to pass. He's a 6 that can do everything that an 8 does...and he does it from that position.
By Willkiller Go To PostNot to anyoneI'll give you 50p and Nketiah for him.
Maybe it's just because of how we seem to have 8's falling out of our ears, but I feel like a good 6 is harder to come by, and if you have a player who can hold down that position well, you don't fuck with the setup.
By Plasma Go To PostI'll give you 50p and Nketiah for him.Only £149,999,999.50 to go!
England squad announced at 2 p.m today. They are calling it the "pre-Euro training squad" so presumably it will be a provisional squad with maybe 30 to whittle down to 26. Would like to see some Palace boys in the team. Should aim to lock down Olise before he can represent anyone else.
Damn United massively over performed their underlying numbers. Predicted 15th, ended up in 8th! Well done!
Individual talent bailed ETH out so hard this season it's hilarious. Onana in goal, various wonder goals and late winners in games we were struggling in (nearly all of them).
Makes it even funnier when people go off on the players being the primary problem.

Chelsea were on track to really underperform by the end of the season but hit that great run and ended up just barely under where their stats would put them.
Jones is good to see but Harvey Elliott being overlooked is kind of absurd to me. He’s one of the most in-form English players and deserves to go to the Euros. Not that I want him to miss his pre season but for his sake he’s earned it.

No one crossed anything close to a serious goal tally.
Onana only came good in the second half of the season. He was dogwater at the start of the season and is the reason we made an early CL exit.

Why do you think this is? Be careful! And when giving your reasoning please do note that we outscored our xG.
I don't think Onana was generally poor in the league in the first half of the season, but yes he certainly did have clangers in the CL.

Be ETH out all the live long day, but didn't give me this individuals shit. All these players were trash this season.
You could have used the excuse last season that rash purple patch papered over a lot of deficiencies.
But this season, no one, not a single player stood up to do anything.
Casimero - trash
Rashford - trash
Bruno - inconsistent and trash
Entire back line - literally dead.
Seriously, focus on spurs my dude. Gonna be peak now you've been sussed.
