I believe that’s the most apt description of travelling through a new area in this game.
It also feels like the game is just trolling me sometimes. Enjoyably trolled though, like getting Rick rolled in 2007. Not nefariously trolled like being swatted.
Think I preferred archer over mystic spearhand. Comparing max rank archer to rank 1 spearhand though. I’m sure it’ll get better with more abilities unlocked and upgraded.
I really grew to love the kick/curb stomp from archer though. It was surprisingly effective against enemies that were weak to blunt attacks, and it stun locked too. I’ve booted a countless number of rock saurians to death.

Haven’t tried warrior yet. So far for me
Ranger > fighter > level 1 spearhand.
I had a lot of fun with fighter though. Good class. Ranger was the most enjoyable time I’ve had with the game so far.
Spearhand I think I’d enjoy a lot more if I had it earlier in the game. I.e. if I had it before going through Battahl bareback.
Speaking of which, the trip to the Volcano Island was some shit.

By DY_nasty Go To PostI didn't go to the volcano island til I was level 50. I've been slow balling the game hard afI reached level 39 at the end of the trek.
I need more port crystals. I got one from the elves and put it down at their settlement. Haven’t gotten another since. Trekked the side road into Battahl twice now. Running the boss gauntlet both times.
Level 59 and just did the underwater temple thing lmao
Also - I don't 'dislike' spearhand but compared to OG classes its really missing versatility. I may go back to fighter once I wrap things up.

I miss this game and my crew
I ran with Warfarer for endgame mostly. The only class I truly hated was Trickster lol

Been in the end game for a while now. Got every class to at least rank 5 except mage & trickster, did all the quests, riddles etc. idk, im so mixed on the game. There's a lot to like but whenever i think about it, the negatives really just sour me.

My only complaints are how the main quest and side quests are structured, and how rare port crystals seemingly are.
Quest structure: It feels like there’s an intended way to quest. To complete X amount of main quests, then take on and complete 1-2 side quests at a time within the local vicinity to where the MQ has brought you.
If (like me) you break this pattern and just explore through side quests, you will pick up more side quests than you can complete within the allotted time (for quests where time limits apply).
You’ll also be penalised because you’ll go to far off areas (Battahl) through side quests and find that there’s no port crystals available once there. So going through side quests and travelling around a new area can be very tedious.
If you were to play as seemingly intended, I believe the main quest will hand you a port crystal for Battahl.
Port crystal scarcity: Seriously now, I’m over 40 hours into the game. I’ve been exploring, I’ve been doing a lot of side quests. I’m having a good time. However throughout my play time so far, through all the settlements and cities I’ve been to so far. I’ve encountered ONE portable port crystal. Which was a reward for completing the quest line with the Elves.
It’s a shit system

I think I only found 3 or 4
By HottestGrapes Go To PostYou’ll also be penalised because you’ll go to far off areasYeah lol I had to go back to an area I've already explored to pick up an item that wasn't actually there until you accept a quest. Happened more than once
Started game. There’s a lot of mechanics to get used to, but it’s slowly sinking in.
Why in gods name is there not a horse? You’re gonna force me to walk but also make running a drain on stamina? Like what?

Can't believe some of the QoL stuff thats missing. Not having multiselect when moving stuff to pawns when the weight limit is so harsh has nothing to do with artistic vision, it's just a really fucking stupid oversight. Setting quick-use slots is something that was thought of and implemented decades ago as well. You need two buttons for sprint though.
In the capital now and starting to get into the flow of things. Gregor disappeared into the ether so I never even got the option to take the cart and had to go in through a side passage.
I normally quite like sitting and watching for a while when it's an option for fast travel, but it's slower than an overencumbered walk in this. Single wolf bite broke the carriage, which doesn't bode well for it's usefulness.
Using thief, bit annoying that you have to use two of your skill slots to get the required jumping height/distance. Pawn throwing range isn't quite enough. Plus whenever they open a chest I want to batter them straight back to the Rift.

Yeah the menus are straight trash. The amount of button pushes I gotta do just to mark a quest as a priority is insane. Even the pawn selection is work. You can’t select a pawn from the list, just see what’s available in the rift. I gotta walk around, find the fucker and then talk to them to hire em. I’m still trying to wrap my head around the pawn specific side quests, but the menu and explanations are so trash I’ve largely ignored them.
Leveled thief and started a fighter. I’m assuming, behind experimentation and fun, the benefit to leveling all vocations is being able to use all the augments regardless of vocation.
Game has its hooks in me. Lots to explore. Caves, random settlements, a fucking misty section that hides everything in the map, elvish town (thanks muklti language pawn). I’m digging the quests so far too. I’m still pretty early, but a lot of these quests tie into the main story or add context.
They need to tone down the fucking pawn talk though. Repetitive as all hell lmao.
It is funny to me that everyone I know can recognize me though a guards mask but apparently not the actual guards in the castle.

Really should have given you a comparison chart when you create your character, the basic values don't seem to mean anything with regards to how they stack up to to the average NPC. I made my thief a touch under average height, in-game he has the height and build of a 14 year old. Has a bad case of the cutscene derp-face as well, and my pawn has a chicken neck where her head is next to her shoulders as much as it's above them.
Gonna re-do him and my pawn when I've got the gold to spare.

I used the archer quite a lot in the first game but don't remember the controls being this weird. R1 to aim, activate the skill slots and fire standard arrows is certainly a choice.
Played around a bit with the Thief mobility build. Seems good for getting across gaps, but still pretty cumbersome making vertical jumps. Should probably be a dedicated command to tell pawns to use springboard abilities.
Pretty frustrating to have a quest that you pick up in the city and sends you twenty minutes north, then the guy you met there goes back to the city and sends you back north again. Stuff like that and the restricted save system just aren't necessary, there's no way the game would be worse if they made it a bit less of a pain in the arse to play.

I knew you would like it too 😁
And that it would bully Hitch lmaooo
The save function has not been an issue for me. Use the inns every couple of hours in case of a major fuck up or, just load from last save.
My biggest complaint so far is traversal. At least let me run unhindered by stamina. Stamina should be a battle mechanic only.
Spearhand is OP. Pop bubble and go. Does lot of damage, has a dashing attack to close distances. Pair them with a sorc who can imbue elements and it’s almost unfair.
So far archer is way more OP than I would have assumed reading DY and SY posts. Shoot water arrow. Shoot frost or lightning soells Boom. lol my issue with archer is that loading up elemental arrows takes up skill slots. Makes the class feel more one dimensional. The elemental combos are pretty devastating though.
I think I’ll move to magick archer next. Only reason I want to play mage is for the stamina augment. I’ve never been into magic classes much in ARPG. May do sorc for the magick augment to make spearhand even more OP.
Fighter was OK. Too tanky of a play style for me though. I will play the other melee classes. Not sure about trickster.

Do you get Ferrystones at a consistent clip throughout the game? I've hoarded quite a few now and only used one. Placed a portcrystal in the Sacred Arbor, don't expect I'll be going back there too often though. Gives me decent access back to Melve anyway wth the shortcut.
I buy a ferrystone at any opportunity, on top of finding them, and don’t feel I use them sparingly at all and still have like 6 in my inventory. Your port crystal should be used in Battahl. I think there’s up to three crystals you can find and you’ll eventually end up south of battahl so that’s another location I would use. I’ve only found the one though.

Had an ogre just peace out and jump off a cliff at 2%hp yesterday, goodbye sweet materials :(
I suggest looking up a guide so you end up getting the max amount of port crystals(some are "missable"), they are incredibly rare and traveling the world remains tedious to the very end
lol I got the crystal Sy is speaking of but not because I looked up that specific quest. I’ll just say, it feels like the game assumes you’re going to experiment with all vocations available early instead of leveling a vocation and moving to another
I’m not big on the play style as I like hand to hand more, but running around with drenching arrows and a mage stacked with booms and a sorc is funny. Boomed up Torrent shot ftw

Bro it makes Drake fights hilarious. They’re weak to ice and drenching them before a boom or a frost spell just … well it works. The reason the archer sucks is tbat you need buffs from your pawns to do major damage to large bosses that aren’t weak to fire. Other classes do not.
Sphinx located … wow this is cool. Got first 4 riddles and then war? You want me to remember the first fucking seeker token I found. Ohhh go fuck your self. Got the port crystal so I guess I don’t care that much. If I okay NG+ I’ll make sure to remember for the trophy bit the dude behind this game mechanic is an asshole lmao
So NG+ is super duper easy mode lol?
Finished with magick archer and liked the end game stuff. Tbe story was whatever. Game was fun though. Loved lots of it but man traveling sucks. I did find a bunch of port crystals though so it got better at the end. Even had an extra in my inventory as a luxury drop

Think I'm done with this, just can't be bothered with 95% of what the game wants you to do.
Had been hoping for a Dragons Dogma sequel for years so pretty disappointed

North of the checkpoint rest town finishing off some side stuff before the coronation
Just having long stretches of playing where I turn it off having not had an interesting fight, new piece of equipment, emergent situation, side quest event or plot point. The game's esoteric quest design really isn't for me either, come to discover that I'm a basic bitch in that department. Where I think I'd like quests that don't tell you exactly where to go and when, and fail states/branches that can't be easily rolled back on, I actually just find it really frustrating.
The world just isn't interesting enough, in variety or terrain, to personally to enjoy the glacial pace that I'm moving through it. Doesn't scratch the freedom and surprise itch of an Elden Ring (and even there I quit 60% in), or the lizard-brain pleasing, icon-clearing, checklist-ticking routine of a Ghost of Tsushima for me, and I think I might just want one or the other while DD2's design philosophies are all over the place.

The world changes scenery when you get past check point.. I get most of your frustrations, even though I liked the esoteric way the questing is done.
That said, if you drop the rather useless side quests. Sprint to get mystic archer and check a guide or two you could probably finish the game in another 15 hours or less. It’s not a difficult game.
