I wonder how many upsets actually happened because of the away goals rule
Would be interesting to see how often ties were settled on away goals, and how often they were settled in favour of the bigger team.
The same function that causes an advantage to an underdog away in the second leg caused an advantage to the bigger team away in the second leg

Even if away goals were still a thing, they shouldn't count in extra time cause thats just giving a team an advantage cause of when a paper was drawn.
By JesalR Go To PostI wonder how many upsets actually happened because of the away goals ruleOf the top of my head, the 2003/04 season when Porto eliminated Man United and Monaco eliminated Real Madrid both on away goals.

By Dazenheimer Go To PostWhat was the rationale for getting rid of away goals?Scum and I talked about this already but it's so that they can play CL games in middle east/Asia/USA eventually

Yeah, that checks out.
By Dazenheimer Go To PostWhat was the rationale for getting rid of away goals? The same rationale behind the new format, minimize the possibility of big teams being eliminated earlier.

I think away goals were total bollocks in concept....BUT they certainly led to more tension and more excitement, so I miss them.
The new CL format honestly isn't so bad, the really big teams rarely went out in the group stages anyway I think the potential for more quality games in the early stages is much higher. I think people will be on board with it by the end of next season, but we'll see. More games is shit of course, but the format itself...I'm not super opposed to a change there. Outside of two groups this year the CL has been extremely dull.

The CL format has gone through various revisions through the years.
remember when there were two group stages?

You'll never sing that
By JesalR Go To PostI wonder how many upsets actually happened because of the away goals ruleI remember us going out a couple of times on away goals (Monaco and Bayern). Think it may have happened in the Europa League as well though I can't remember who against.

Casually scoring the most goals in 2024 while Arsenal fans think they’ve won the league already, you won’t sing that.

Heaven forbid Arsenal fans be happy about their team winning and scoring a load of goals in the past few weeks.
People will still be pretending Chelsea are going to break PSR, despite them having a lot of assets they can sell to generate a load of cash very quickly.

Spurs want Gallagher, theres 40/50m. We're buying Hall in the summer for 30m. Maatsen has been impressing in Dortmund, then you've got Colwill, Lukaku, Broja, Fofana, Chalobah, Ziyech. They have a ton of players to sell. Gallagher, Hall, Maatsen and Colwill is proably close to 150m alone.

Then they've still got the issue that selling the likes of Gallagher and Colwill is taking out the few effective players they have

It's not really about that at this point, if they have to generate x amount in sales this summer to meet PSR...they can do it.
They're still in a terrible position for actually improving the squad and the club as a result, I 100% agree with that. But purely in terms of meeting PSR, I don't think they're in too bad a position. The 90m loss is actually a fair bit lower than what was expected
Colwill just signed a new contract, didn’t he? I don’t think he’s being considered a sellable asset. Gallagher and Maarten definitely are though.
The 90m loss apparently includes the sale of Mount, as well as Haavertz ,Kovacic, RLC, Koullibally and the goalie.
So feasibly selling all those players will just get them another hefty loss when they need a large profit to escape PSR sanctions.

By Perfect Blue Go To PostWhy are you trying to bring us down bro?I'm just a real stickler for financial regulations.
I actually think Chelsea will just resign themselves to getting a points deduction next season and hope they can do enough to avoid another one and rebuild from there.
