Ipswich are ALIVE!
By FootbalIFan Go To PostThe new cl format is basically the super leagueRemember when we all had a good laugh at lolSpurs being a part of it and UEFA threw away goals under the bus? They knew what they were doing.
By Xpike Go To PostI don't think it's due to away goals, don't think there were that many upsets in groups to cause a particularly interesting ro16 this timeYeah, Lazio is 9th in Serie A and Real Sociedad is 15 points away from 4th place and Champions League football.
Which should hopefully mean next round will be the 8 best teams of the competition going at it
Both teams are having bad seasons, it's not that shocking they were easily beaten by Bayern and PSG.

Next round will probably be
Bayern

Arsenal
PSG
Atletico
Dortmund
Man City
Barcelona/Napoli
Should give us way better ties

Just skip the round of 16 then.
1st progresses directly to it.
2nd goes to europa league
3rd goes to conference
4th goes home or whatever league the create at that tier.
But obviously this is not even possible anymore considering the format change for next season.

City
are on a tier of their own at this point. so it creates this inevitable feeling that the outcome is guaranteed in terms of who we see in the next round.
Atletico, Bayern, Madrid being wild cards and maybe PSG too. Everyone else is below that level.

Didn't deserve to lose tonight for the first time in a while. Oh well. Leicester are a very dirty and cynical team and just not very impressive in general. Burnley last season were much more so, infact.
Seems Richard Hughes from Bournemouth may be our next technical director, and Michael Edwards may be making a return alongside him. Would be pleased with that.

which you shouldn't but still lol

There was one report of that nature but there have also been journalists saying that he would return if conditions were met (he wants a bigger role than technical director), and there was also a note that he is a big fan of Hughes and rates him highly.

The only relatively competitive tie would be Atletico vs Dortmund
Then if City don't meet Madrid in the semis, then both advance to the final.
Easy peasy lemon squeezy.

But I guess Liverpool's situation is also in flux atm
From Solkajaer's appearance on the Overlap. Forgot how much I hated the side a few years ago. This reminds me why
By Cleff Go To PostFrom Solkajaer's appearance on the Overlap. Forgot how much I hated the side a few years ago. This reminds me whyWatched it this morning, lots of references to getting the players smiling...which i enjoyed.
Interesting how he said he was excited about signing Ronaldo, said yes to it...even though he said he had to completely change how they wanted to play because he wasn't able to press (which they knew before he signed) and the season had already started. Good manager then.
By Cleff Go To PostPerez doing whatever it takes to get Xabi
Would probably take Carlo at Liverpool. Vibes and inshallah. *Conveniently ignores the Bayern players hated how lax he was after Guardiola*
By Laboured Go To Post:lolNot sure you can really blame the club for not signing an unknown 17 year old from the Norwegian league for 20 mil because Ole said so.
He probably wouldn't have turned into the same player anyway, he made very good career choices. iirc he even turned down Leeds to go to Salzburg which was again probably the right move at that point in his career and development.
By Laboured Go To Post:lolI remember those times pretty well, I think we chatted about it 4-5 years ago.
Rumours around that United was scouting Haaland when he was at Molde, and even then he was scoring goals for fun. Then that u21 match, then Salzburg…
Shows you how bad the decision making at the club is/was. Running a business without understanding what the business was about.
Basically like Xbox.
(Sorry)
By Willkiller Go To PostNot sure you can really blame the club for not signing an unknown 17 year old from the Norwegian league for 20 mil because Ole said so.He was asking the club to sign him back when he was still at Molde. Reckon he was a lot cheaper back then.

By Laboured Go To PostWell quite clearly they had their own scouting input….
Yeah, but I highly doubt he was the same player then as he is now.
He exploded while at Salzburg while he was going through his most important developmental years, not sure you can easily just assume with hindsight if he'd gone to a shambles of a club at 17 he'd have turned out in the same way.
If you had scouting reports on him, you can safely assume the other big clubs had scouting reports on him too...but he ended up in Salzburg (after turning down Leeds)
While you're right about that it does point to the club having clear runs at players who have are serious potential talents, end up prevaricating and then trying to womp massive sums at them a couple of years later. Not to say we're the only club that does this, but I think we're among the worst offenders.
By Willkiller Go To PostYeah, but I highly doubt he was the same player then as he is now.Yeah, he probably wont turn out as well as he does now, but hindsight is 20/20.

Just that Ole offered Haaland to United for 4 million back then, and they didnt bite.

It's so common though man, and I don't think that's a coincidence. When players are that young and are still developing they're just risks, and clubs often let them develop elsewhere and take another look once they're physically grown and have more experience (albeit at a lower level).
Like, Alan Varela, we were heavily linked with him last Jan. Ended up at Porto for 5 mil, now being linked with Liverpool and Arsenal for 60. Haaland is an example of the same obviously. Amad Diallo is an example of the opposite happening, a club taking the risk when they're young and at this point, it not really working out. The pressure of being a young player for a big fee and going out on loan to smaller teams is just different than being a young player and being signed to a smaller team while you're being scouted by a bigger club.
It always just irks me when managers bring up massive players they 'failed' to sign, like we nearly got Zidane before he went to Juve. Fans make out as if he'd have been or became the same Zidane and I'm thinking there's absolutely no way his career would have turned out like that
This was a year after Ole offered him to United, and he just joined Salzburg. He hasnt even played one game with them yet.
Personally, I take credit for unearthing Haaland. I signed him when he was 17 that FM year. He was destructive.
By Willkiller Go To PostLike, Alan Varela, we were heavily linked with him last Jan. Ended up at Porto for 5 mil, now being linked with Liverpool and Arsenal for 60.There's no way in hell that Varela would go for 60M€. He is worth about half of that.

By LFMartins86 Go To PostThere's no way in hell that Varela would go for 60M€. He is worth about half of that.Well that's his release clause and there's plenty of reports of Liverpool/Arsenal considering triggering it in the summer.
Regardless, the point was that he was on the radar of clubs for a very small fee a year ago compared to what it'll be in the summer, but clubs obviously decided it made more sense to let him develop at somewhere like Porto for a while.
By Dazenheimer Go To Postso its your fault he went to City.✋️😳🤚
Given the form and injuries, we dodged three midfield bullets in the summer. Wonder how much better Caicedo would be playing if he'd joined us, and if Lavia would have been fit by now. Was delighted to have missed out on Mount then, and even more so now.
Not sure when Endo's legs will go, really hope it doesn't make itself apparent when he's still a key part of the team and it's too late to replace him like happened with Fabinho. I've never seen a Liverpool player decline so quickly without it being the result of a bad injury.
