I‘ve done partial upgrades since it just suited me for whatever reason at the time. My first incarnation of my PC had the Ryzen 1600 and shit wasn’t cutting in a lot of games at 1080p. So I moved to a 9600K.
Then I got a big pay rise and splurged on a new GPU (GTX 1080 to 2080Ti).
Then I got a good deal on a 9900K, pre-delidded with a copper IHS. It was something like £420 instead of £550 IIRC. Impulse buy all the way.
Went with a 3080Ti later on since I had the opportunity to buy it at MSRP. During Covid/crypto shortages.
Then I upgraded to a new board and a 12700 because I basically wanted a cooler/lower power CPU without losing performance. Plus I wanted to help my mate get into PC gaming so I passed the 9900K, motherboard and a few other parts to him.
I’ll be honest, it’s not a frugal approach to PC building. The next build I’ll be going straight to the best available within my price range and not skimping out.

My current pc is the only one that wasn’t a result of partial upgrades in like 15 years and that is mostly because I went to sff and didn’t have anything I could reuse. The old pc is now my home server, working away in a closet.
There's no right or wrong approach, only good and less good upgrades. If you're a proper PC enthusiast, you're gonna be spending that money one way or another.
I’m not sure I do agree honestly. I think the partial upgrade path I chose was definitely not the wise approach to it. Not necessarily wrong, but I know I could’ve gone about it in a more efficient and less costly manner.
Personal needs and circumstances play into it massively though. In that sense there’s no right/wrong since it depends on the individual.
Either way, not something I’m hung up on. Just something I’ve learned from.

Modern hardware makes me feel less and less like I want to update. Between the price of GPUs, power usage of both CPUs and GPUs, and the middling improvements to CPUs one a per cycle basis
That said
10800X3D and 6090 for my dumb ass next upgrade

How serious is the PC fps cheat situation fr
Is it just like every now and then or is it so bad that you kind of just accept it

By Dark PhaZe Go To PostHow serious is the PC fps cheat situation frDepends on the game. I haven’t noticed any in Deadlock which has been the only one I’ve put significant time into recently.

By Dark PhaZe Go To PostHow serious is the PC fps cheat situation frDepends on the game. Only game I really had to just accept that it’s a problem is Siege. Though it’s the FPS I’ve played the most, so I’m going to see more hacks on that basis alone compared to other games.

I also exclusively played ranked and usually ended up on the higher end of the ELO system, so again more likely to see hackers.
I played a pretty healthy amount of Apex Legends back when it came out and never encountered any hackers. Zabo who has played it a lot over the years has probably come across his fair share of them.
The cheater situation got worse with time in Apex. To this day it kind of comes and goes in waves and I can remember at least four distinct occasions over the course of the last - fuck me, almost five - years, where it got so bad I felt like I was running into cheaters just about every other game. That's when I usually took a couple of weeks or months off.
For the most part though ... I have over 5000 hours in Apex combined and I would have stopped playing a long time ago, if I felt the cheaters situation was really that dire. That's been my experience with cheating in online fps games on PC in general. More or less unfortunate depending on the game, but never affecting enough to ruin the fun.

Going to start buying the parts for my new PC. I'm guessing it won't be easy to buy a 9800x3d this week or is it just the GPUs that are out of control?

My guess is you'll be able to get it day 1, if you're quick, otherwise you might have to wait a couple of weeks.
By reilo Go To PostJust get a 7800x3d at this pointDepending on where you live it's either very hard / impossible to find at non-stupid prices or it costs as much as the 9800x3D will. The WoodenIQ play was buying it before AMD decided it was too good a deal at 350-400$ and seemingly ended production. Might as well wait for the new gaming king now.
Ordered some more parts, only missing the cpu and the cooler.
In the end I chickened out on ASRock and went with the MSI MAG X870 Tomahawk. My first MSI board in ages.
Quite expensive at 300€, but since it'll be with me, hopefully, for a long time, I thought it was worth paying the 100€ premium for USB4.0, an additional gen pci5 m.2 slot, 5gbit ethernet, wifi7, debug led display, a full size bottom pcie slot and some nice to have comforts like the ez release latch for the gpu.
It'll be refreshing to navigate a different bios menu than Asus', if nothing else.

Eh, you’ll probably be somewhat disappointed with the BIOS. Asus are(were?) top in that department.
The Asus B350 board I had way back had a fantastic BIOS compared to the ASRock and Gigabyte boards I’ve had.

Looks decent enough from the little YT research I did, won't be getting visited much after the initial setup anyway. Apparently X870 brought with it a brand new bios.
I also dropped Samsung and picked the WD_Black SN850X 2TB as my primary drive. The 990 Pro issues seem to have been fixed, but eh. Gen5 way too costly still.

By Kibner Go To Postgoing back to my roots and ordered this mouse from amazon for less than $30: https://www.kensington.com/p/products/electronic-control-solutions/trackball-products/orbit-trackball-with-scroll-ring/This came in yesterday. Works well for what it is. It doesn't have separate mouse 4/5 buttons but lets me assign clicking both buttons at the same time to whatever I want. The scroll ring is super nice.
will be mainly using it with my personal laptop, especially in bed
If I still dig this for several more months, I migh have to see if there is a version with a couple more buttons.
By reilo Go To PostBuy those CPUs and GPUs before the new Trump tariffs, boysI think the tariff exemption for things like video cards was already set to lift in May next year

I missed on the day 1 9800x3D stock because I was waiting for it to appear on Amazon. Just according to keikaku.
Fuck Bezos.
Nah, it's completely on me. Had two in the basket on Caseking.de, asked my brother if I should pull the trigger, he said let's wait for Amazon. He's never been right about anything, so I should've known.

4080, will upgrade to the 5080 asap.
Would get the 5090 at 4090 prices, but I think we all know how that'll go.
Considering where we are in the console cycle, realistically all I need is improved RT performance and whatever ML wizardry Nvidia decide to put behind the upgrade wall this time around.

Went ahead and bought / preordered the 9800x3D on Mindfactory.de for 550€.
It'll likely be more than a month before I get it, unless I'll manage to get the jump on one elsewhere as it gets restocked over the coming weeks.
Getting a bit of that 'hunt for the 3080 during the cryptoboom' ptsd, but I'll survive. It just sucks looking at all the other parts just sitting there.

Always the risk when waiting for new hardware to release. Especially when it’s actually a good product at a reasonable price. Between the low initial supply, genuine demand and scalpers, it’s a fucking nightmare to get what you want.
It’ll be worth it in the end though Zabo. Get a 500hz monitor to tide you over and make use of the 3D cache when you get the new CPU too. Those controller boys with their aim assist on Apex won’t stand a chance against you at 4x their FPS.
