Intel Core Ultra 9 285K and Ultra 5 245K review: gaming losses, content creation wins. Less power, less powerful, more potential?
I mean the reduction in power draw is good, but when youāre still 3x the competition itās hard to get excited for it.
If I have this right: it costs $130 more than a 7800X3D while running at least 5% worse in games while still consuming a fuckton more power? We're not even talking about competing with the 7950X3D here for the same price.
Pray for diehard's stock, yall.

Iām still of the opinion that if you have a 5800X/12600K or better then thereās no real point in looking for an upgrade yet.
Unless you just want to have the fastest gaming CPU, to have the fastest gaming CPU. Which I respect.

Equally though, there are several games where the 285K is way off, including in Cyberpunk 2077 where the 285K is outperformed by the three-generation old 12600K (!!).

Arrow Lake has even more Windows-related bugs than Zen 5.
The fact that Intel saw how poor Zen 5's reception was in part due of that and decided it was acceptable to release a product line that's even worse in said aspect is the true indicator of how far they've fallen ... or rather how little they care about the gaming / enthusiast crowd these days.
Also, AMD is now going to absolute fleece me for the 9800x3D. More and more I wish had bought a 5800x3D when they were still available.

EDIT: Because the 3D cache now apparently sits below the CCD, it's reversed, get it? Okay, good.

These X870 motherboards are all the same. All that changes from vendor to vendor is the USB2/3 port configuration, which I couldn't care less about. Might as well get a cheaper one for around 250ā¬. 50ā¬ more than the ASRock B650 Steel Legend I was zeroing in, I guess it's worth it for USB4 and potential but unlikely better compatibility with Zen 6, if indeed AMD decide to give AM5 one more gen.
Some of them are starting to support SteamOS directly, too. When that becomes viable then picking beyond the Steam Deck becomes very attractive.
By Laboured Go To PostBetween that and Bazzite also automatically pinning games to my x3D cores means I get a better experience and better performance. lol

Itās a shame that Linux and Nvidia GPUs donāt play so well together (or has that changed recently?). Iād love to switch over my main PC to have a better console UI.
Steam Big Picture is okay I suppose.

AMD drivers are built into the kernel so they just work.
Big Picture mode on Linux is more of a crapshoot for reasons I donāt understand. Many people (including myself) have to run it in windowed mode at no higher than 1080p or it starts lagging severely. Like a full second or more between button press and ui change. Itās bizarre and I have not found any setting that fixes it.
Deep down I knew Wooden had to be wrong to not wait for the 9800x3D, but I pretended otherwise.
Seriously though, these leaks seem to indicate a decent uplift, at least compared to non-x3D Zen 5.
going back to my roots and ordered this mouse from amazon for less than $30: https://www.kensington.com/p/products/electronic-control-solutions/trackball-products/orbit-trackball-with-scroll-ring/
will be mainly using it with my personal laptop, especially in bed

Well, no going back now. Ordered the case. Went with the Antec Flux, black.

The North XL was my first choice for a long time and I still like it a bit better than the Antec aesthetically, but at 200ā¬ vs 110ā¬ there's just no world in which I'd pick it over the Flux, which does everything else considerably better and comes with 5 pwm fans.
The darker wood accents should match my desk beautifully. Welcome back, ATX.

Fo sho. I ordered two, one for my bro. I had to scour the entire continent to finally find the black version in stock in a never heard of italian online store, which assured me they actually had it, ready to be shipped. Fingers crossed. I'm trusting you, assistente clienti Hekuran Qosja.
Locked in components so far:
Antec Flux
9800x3D
ASRock B650 Steel Legend Wifi (it's just too good at 185ā¬)
Arctic Liquid Freezer III (280 or 360 version, not sure)
NZXT C1200 ATX 3.1
Still debating if I should go with 32 or 64gb ram, leaning towards the latter. Getting a standard 6000 CL30 kit, ain't nobody got time.

Got 5 Gig internet coming to be installed tomorrow, bois. 1 Gig is so 3 years ago. Also upgrading to wifi7 from 6.
Can't wait for the numbers to go even more brrr

I was considering a network upgrade recently, going to a system with dedicated APs and routers instead of all in one boxes. Figured Iād wait until after more than my phone has WiFi 7 before an upgrade

By HottestGrapes Go To PostThe 9900K I had prior is still going strong for my mate with a 7900XTX for 4K gaming.
Itās why Iām hesitant to upgrade. I just know Iām not gonna see an appreciable uplift at 4K given Iām using a 3080Ti.
Though the urge to upgrade is ever present and sometimes insatiable.
By Kibner Go To PostImo, get whatever CPU ends up being best DDR5 chip. Which might be the 9800X3D. But, you can wait until that is confirmed and prices come down before getting it.Testing quote copying and mentions, continuing the discussion here. @Kibner @HottestGrapes
So, yeah, wait for DDR6 chips to get announced and get the gen prior to that.
I'm now pretty much upgrading my gpu every generation and while I think the 5900x would do just fine feeding the likely 5080 I'm getting at 3840x1600 and 4K, cpu demands are definitely increasing with ray tracing and whatnot and I can't be 100% sure. It will certainly be quite under-powered by the time the 6080 comes around. The 9800x3D won't be, so might as well upgrade the cpu now, since it's going to be 18-24 months before a better gaming processor comes around.
One thing I've learned about myself over the years is that I just don't do partial upgrades (gpus being the exception). I often think about it, but never do.
