Managed to kick one of the kids out of the box room in my house and I am converting it into a home office/gaming/guitar room.
I don't have much space so can only really fit a desk that is max 120cm wide and for now I am nicking 2 monitors from work which both measure 54cm. I am considering getting a dual monitor arm to raise the screens up and then getting either a small soundbar or a couple of those little creative labs pebble speakers to sit underneath. Not going to need a lot of volume in a tiny room and need to save space where I can.
I will need a sturdy desk to hold the monitor arm and not some cheap POS made of cardboard. I'm considering getting a standing desk or is that just a gimmick?
I will also need a comfy chair with either no arms or easily removable arms to play guitar.
So far I have bought a Logitech G815 white keyboard that lights up all pretty colours. It seemed like a good deal for £50 but it is wired
https://www.currys.co.uk/products/logitech-g815-mechanical-gaming-keyboard-white-10242822.html
Now I want to get a white mouse to match it and would prefer wireless. So thinking maybe the Logitech G305 which is also on sale

Standing desks are not a gimmick. If you want to have the sturdiest of desktops, get a butcher's block and cut it down to size. A fair amount of work to do, but it works and works well (from what people tell me). You can get a standing desk without a desktop. Will require you to drill holes in the desktop to work with the standing desk. I have a Jarvis, I believe. Having a standing desk that has at least 2 memory slots (one for sitting height and one for standing) is necessary, imo.
There are lots of good chairs. The main brands to look at are Herman Miller and Steelcase. You will want a chair with 8+ years of warranty. Buy refurb if you can (and make sure there is a warranty) to save money. Make sure there is a good return policy because a chair that works for one person won't work for another.

Dual monitors is the real gimmick. 1 big monitor > 2 smaller ones, unless you have very specific needs. Speaking as someone with 2 monitors.
At 120cm wide I don't think you need to concern yourself too much with sturdiness. If you're set on a standing desk, get a quality motorized base and order an MDF tabletop cut to size and fitted with a veneer of your choosing. It's what I always recommend. It's cheap (I paid ~100€ for a 2200x800x25mm top), durable, easy to drill and screw into. Kibner's suggestion is a good alternative, likely pricier and heavier tho. Of course, if you find a complete standing desk that fits your budget and size that isn't made of cardboard, go for it and save yourself some time and handiwork.
As for chairs ... do not buy a gaming / racing chair, get a proper office chair with a metal base, fully adjustable, with lumbar support and suspended mesh everywhere, including the seat. Let your ass breathe and the seat conform to it, not the other way around.
You don't need to spend 1000€$ on a Miller, but you're unlikely to find a quality one below 500€$. I hear you on the easily removable arms as a fellow guitar player, it's the one thing that's missing from mine. Might mod that functionality into it some day. Proper foldable arms is a niche feature, you're probably better off buying one without (or simply remove them).

Yeah, 500€$ is the absolute floor for buying a nice chair that is not actively harmful to your body and will last for years. You can maybe find one for a bit cheaper on the used market. Again, check out the warranty. If that chair ain't guaranteed to last for close to a decade, you will be lucky to get a couple years out of it.
Mesh seating is a personal thing, imo. If your butt or back sweats a lot when sitting, absolutely get mesh and accept nothing else. Solid fabric is fine in other cases. Never get faux leather. Real leather is likely too expensive and probably ain't going to be the best feeling.
Completely agreed about avoiding a gaming/racing chair. They have nowhere near the amount of adjustments you will need and are made super cheaply.
This video doesn't go into everything I wish it did, but it is a fantastic primer on how to think about your setup in terms of ergonomics:

By reilo Go To PostI like my chair from Branch and it's only $329 🤷🏼♂️That 7 year warranty is probably why, tbh.
Also, an underated thing about Herman Miller and other really popular office chairs is that replacement parts are relatively cheap and plentiful so that even if the chair does start to break down after the warranty, it isn't a huge deal to just repair it for much less than the cost of a new chair.

i am extremely pleased with this whole build. it just... works so well and is fairly quiet.
one weird thing… both ssds seems to have… a weird high pitched sound to them? when under high load like gaming or downloading

By WoodenLung Go To Postmaybe so. just only seems to happen in relation to ssds getting used to their fullest.I have honestly never heard of ssds making a noise like that. Psu and gpu, however? All the damn time. And it happening only under certain levels of load is also common. I imagine it would make a similar noise if you just ran a gpu and/or cpu stress test. Gaming doesn’t tax the ssds that much, after all. It especially doesn’t do any writing to disc and reading is a much lower load so I really don’t think it’s the ssds. 90% sure it’s the psu.
it's more like... when i loaded a save in FM or something. But I am transferring some big files right now with no noise. So I guess maybe the psu or gpu. Just doesnt sound like it's coming from the psu, and ive had this gpu for some years now.
my old pc was annoying loud at times though, that the sound might just have gotten lost in it though.

Most likely the gpu. Undervolting cut out like 90% of the coil whine I had when I briefly owned the 3070 FE.
EDIT: Ah, weird. Could be an ssd thing, then.
EDIT: Ah, weird. Could be an ssd thing, then.
The noise comes form the SSD changing power states, which is happening a few thousand times per second, which causes a piezo electric effect (small movement due to electricity) in the drive, creating an audible noise. To resolve, you can turn off the C-state power option in the BIOS.
It depends on how deep down the mini itx rabbit hole you want to go. You'll definitely end up paying more for the case, motherboard and psu.
200-300$€ extra compared to a no-nonsense ATX build at the very least, I'd say.
Then if you want bespoke cables, custom cooling and a boutique case, you can easily double that.

By JesalR Go To PostThat gorgeous. How expensive/loud are those builds? I want something much smaller for my next buildOpen frame cases like that often run cooler and quieter than normal builds because there is no need to worry about intake or exhaust so you can have fewer fans or run them at lower rpm’s. If you have coil whine, however, an open frame is louder because there is nothing to absorb those sounds.
They can also be louder because there’s no case to insulate the fan noise, even when they are running at lower RPMs.
They do look good though.

What's the best ad blocker for Youtube? The site has started detecting it on Firefox :(
Tempted to just pay for whatever the premium thingy is called given how often I use it, and how regular and lengthy the ads have gotten. My dad already has it but the family plan is on a per-household basis, any way to dodge that?
