I'm curious about the Macbook, but unfortunately the software that I'm using will probably never be on a Mac.
But maybe I'll get the Air for personal uses, however the Apple tax on upgrades is hilarious and making it difficult.

By rossonero Go To PostI'm curious about the Macbook, but unfortunately the software that I'm using will probably never be on a Mac.Virtualization is so fucking good these days that you can easily run Windows or Linux in a fully containerized VM on the new MBPs that you won't feel any performance hinderance.

Kibner and I actually went through this and it's so easy to do these days. There's everything from free options to stuff like Parallels which costs money but works incredible on M chip MBPs -- including a mode that will run a Windows app and make it look like its a standalone app within Mac.
BIG caveat that YMMV if you're using hardware intensive software like AutoCAD or something.
I love my M2 Air, fwiw. The heaviest thing I do on it is build personal websites. 512GB SSD and 16GB of unified memory is enough. I don't play games on it. I have never done anything that would cause it to thermally throttle. It just works and works well with 10+ hours of battery life when watching Twitch.tv and Hulu after 18+ months.
It's also really dang light and the absense of a fan means it is absolutely silent, which is useful when in bed. The only upgrade I really need for it is an oled screen. They are all still using mini-led, iirc. An oled screen would truly make it wonderful.
Also, a touch screen would be excellent but Apple has literally no desire to do that for MacOS, which makes me incredibly sad. It is the one major hardware thing laptops like the MS Surface have over it.

I actually get to choose all the computer specs/models for the company and selected that one, but I couldn't have pulled off having the only Mac in the company :/
People already going to give me looks for having that model and not the fat Precision 7000 series

unfortunately, my contract workers only use da vinci and premiere for editing.
but that's a good idea, im gonna run to the local apple store and see if i can have them demo premiere running on an m3

Ding ding ding. I'm actually very surprised that Autodesk software don't have Apple Silicon versions, but that's probably because I think of them as Adobe type of company that is good at getting their software at everything.

I was actually ringing for the "or something" part of that sentence. I'm surprised that AutoCAD has an Apple Silicon version and even Maya. But Inventor does not, and that's what we use the most. SolidEdge and SAP I don't think have Apple Silicon versions either, but need to google that one.
Every time one of these pops up on my YT feed I get the urge ... one of these years I'm gonna get me an open air case / frame.
I'm sure their shareholders love that they're selling AI branded laptops now.
Nevermind what the consumers want.

next thing you guys are going to say that you didn't need a copilot key on your keyboard. Ridiculous.
Any reason I shouldn't buy a couple AW3225QF for me and the ms right now? Not sure if there is anything coming up, her Samsung Odyseyy G7 monitor is on the fritz after a couple years (and is out of warranty), and I'm still using my old Acer Predator XB271HU. I use a tiling window manager for my machine so I might have to start using apps full screen more often.
Linux command line life on an endgame 240hz OLED, just like Torvalds-kun envisioned all those years ago.
I'd rather get a WOLED than a QD-OLED for a more desktop oriented use case, but if Alienware OLEDs still come with a 3 year burn-in warranty, then panel technology is much less of a factor.

I put in the order for the oleds. Also, a few monitor arms and a laptop tray accessory for my work laptop.
E: also, I’m a freak and used some online calculators to verify that I get an Apple retina-like experience with these monitors at my normal seating position as long as I can get the monitor close up against the wall.

Congrats, Kib. Commiserations to your wallet and may your pixels last long.
In other news, I've been using the Ninjutso Sora v2 for the past week or so.
It's fucking great. Very much a claw grip mouse, which is what I wanted. The hump is more towards the back compared to the G Pro, but since it sits lower it doesn't get in the way. It's also a very comfortable rodent for claw/palm, which is a style I often fall back to when chilling.
No real complaints so far. I like the optical switches, the clicks are a bit more defined and thonky than I'm used to, with virtually no pre-travel. I'm still getting used to the wheel's click-in action after years of Kailh encoders (no idea what this one uses), but it's good. No problems with scrolling either.
Can't really speak on battery longevity, I've only been using it for Apex, I'm still rocking the G Pro for everything else. Doesn't look like it'll be an issue. I'm not getting the optional 8000hz dongle, waste of money and battery life. 1000hz is all you need.
I also quite like the browser-based software interface. It's basic and still in beta, but it works and has all the settings you'd need. Set and forget.
The thing that surprised me the most is how quickly and effortlessly I made the switch, despite the mouse weighing about half what the G Pro does. I thought I'd be overshooting for days, have to fuck with sensitivity ... nothing of the sort, I was home in an hour.
I guess there really is no mouse that's too light. #40ggang

Thanks for the review, Zabo! It looks and sounds fantastic!
The 5000 series better bring something as essential as frame generation in addition to the expected raster / rt gains, because my 4080 is still destroying everything I throw in its path.

Isn’t the 50 series using the same node as the 40 series? Might be another pass from me honestly.
Though I do want to build a proper dedicated living room PC eventually.

Supposedly be on 4NP. It's technically just a refinement of 5N but should be 11% more performant and 22% more efficient.
edit: Wait, the 4090 was using "N4"? Still seems to be confusion about that.

I got tired of waiting and pulled the trigger on the Chilkey ND75.
I'm sticking with the purple theme for the time being. Keyboard can't be beat at 150€, it has basically everything I want - 75%, aluminium, wired, 2.4ghz, bluetooth, three different mounting options / styles, even a small screen, which, sure, why not.
The only thing missing is via / qmk compatibility, which doesn't bother me, and the fact that it's ANSI. My first ever, hopefully I'll get used to it quick. Might get the ISO pcb, if they ever release it as an upgrade. A volume knob option would've been welcome, but I have different plans for that.

The new Acer Predator X32 X3 has a dual-mode panel that can do 480Hz at 1080p, or 240Hz at 4K. Typical brightness is just 275 nits, but it can peak at 1,000 — and it offers built-in KVM with 90W of USB-C PD charging, all for $1,200.$1,200 lol 🥲
By reilo Go To Post$1,200 lol 🥲The price of the brick is always going up. :(
I hope I get at least as much life out of these Alienware monitors as I did out of that Acer Predator (about 7 years or so). They arrive today!
Computex is upon us and it's a bit weird that no Zen 5 scores have leaked yet. Bulldozer 2 incoming.
Monitors came in. Took the opportunity to clean off my desk. Slowly getting things back together.
Haven't done anything with the monitor itself, yet. I think I need to choose a different color profile because these reds are way too saturated. Also, need to look at if I need to set something special for subpixel hinting (it isn't being picked up automatically; may not be fully supported yet) and figure out if i want to do scaling. I think I do because holy shit all this text is way too tiny.

Ok, I got it mostly sorted out. Going to take a monitor calibration tool to it later. I also need to see if I can do something about disabling VRR in desktop mode. I can see apps flashing as it goes between 48hz and 240hz when I type or move my mouse. Will probably need to setup a hotkey or something to turn it on and off.
oh, boo! my window manager (Sway) doesn't work well with VRR. That behavior I mentioned earlier with the refresh rate going from 48 to 240hz when i move my mouse also happens in games and there does not appear to be a good workaround: https://github.com/swaywm/sway/issues/6832
I might have to switch my wm when I game if I don't want tearing or vsync lag.
