Sometimes people don't even have full basements just crawlspaces or "root cellars" that are the tiniest spaces but just big enough for access to plumbing and utilities. Between time and enough changing of hands between different owners and it's forgotten until a sewer line or water inline needs redoing and suddenly "well where the fuck is it?" Or you know there's a part 2 and it's another West house and down there is a serial killer's graveyard.
