I imagine that after 15 years of polishing other people's creative works a lot of people there thought it was about time to at least see if they're capable of making something from scratch. Demon's Souls was a good step towards that in terms of making a game that was completely seperate from the original's engine and assets (I think), so why not go all the way if that's what they want?
