To be surprised at how any of this has gone down gives me hope that I too can one day become an executive and make life altering decisions for hundreds of people on a whim and wish that it works out.
Sounds about right.
Using Activision as an example, Activision was netting like 2 billion a year on average for the last 5 years. Even if they were lucky enough to make that kind of money perpetually, the math says they'd make back the money it took to purchase them in 34 years lol.
The number of variables from a success standpoint are too many to count when you factor in Gamepass. Automatically, you're going to get less revenue from Activision from x amount of PC users and Xbox users who decide to just get Gamepass. That's potential net growth for Gamepass though right?! Yes and no:
- What percentage of these subscribers are already subscribers and are essentially a complete loss in revenue for Activision?
- What percentage of these subscribers aren't actual hardcore CoD players, subscribe for two months, then unsubscribe? So instead of $70 in revenue, you maybe get $30 dollars or whatever the cost of Gamepass Ultimate is over two months.
So maybe you go alright, screw it, CoD won't come out on Ps5 in order to force diehards from there to buy an xbox or subscribe to gamepass (legally not possible yet I think, but eventually will be). Is the amount of potential revenue that you can already safely predict from Playstation users guaranteed to transition over 1:1, to say nothing of exceeding previous revenue, if you do this?
And this is the calculus for games that check the box of being high profit live service titles. You start looking at shit that doesn't fit that and things start getting dicey af.

I’m not a billionaire CEO so excuse my ignorance here, however as I understand it they don’t need to make back 70 billion from the Activision purchase.
They paid 70b to acquire a company worth 70b. Now they own a company still worth 70b. On paper, they’re already even.
They just need to continually make YoY profits to keep shareholders happy.
I think it's more like internally, they now want to ensure that their last few years 80 biliion dollars investment in gaming starts to bear fruit.
and the Game Pass cash sink is starting to look like it's curbing their way to future success.

Everything should be available day 1 on Steam and priced reasonably. Only then will nature start healing.
By Scum Go To PostEmbrace your Nintendo & Valve Overlords, JesalR! Everyone else is dead.Eh, they'll all be around in 5-10 years. Easy to assume Nintendo stays strong in that period, and maybe they go 'boring' with the Switch 2 to the point it sells a tonne, but we've seen them fall on their ass after almost every massively selling console they've released in the past.
By C4-621 Go To PostThey're threatening to release more Sonic gamesLegitimately, who’s buying them? Besides Sonic Mania, and I can give Generations and Colours a pass. Who’s buying these trash 3D Sonic games that release so frequently?
My nieces wouldn’t know what Sonic is without the films.

By data Go To PostPhil and Todd doing damage control for having fuckall ready to capitalize on the fallout zeitgeistA real blunder, but at least the existing games got a big boost in player numbers. Should stave off a studio closure for at least 3 months.
The bigger blunder is the show could well be 5 seasons deep before a Fallout 5 even has a release date.

Fallout 5 is after Elder Scrolls and that one is 6-7 years away at least.
