By Hitch Go To PostI got a bit excited when Annapolis popped up in Patriot Games and I recognised it from a road and a church spire, and linked the dots of it having a marine training base. It's the US Navy! Very nice town on the water.
Had a chicken parm sub in a restaurant there, one of the best meals I've had in my life.
Would love to go back but don't really have any reason to go to Maryland again now my aunt and uncle have moved to Virginia :(

Just saw Challengers, a really good film.
Not an exciting movie, but I liked the exploration of friendship and love.

Dogma 2 when.
That didn't take long. He had been talking about the frustration of not being able to do a sequel.
I watched Deadpool and Wolverine, and like idk what we're even doing here man. What's the point of anything anymore.
Idk. I didn't watch it cause I already got ebola aids from watching the trailer several times at the cinema. 200iq move really

i didn't like The Substance at all.
The message is so on the nose. Some scenes are painfully made for the audience's lowest common denominator, like the one where she encounters the old guy who is obviously the one who gave her the information about the substance in the first place. Not only do they zoom in on the huge spot on his hand, but then he drops the card with his number on it, and then he tells her outright that it's him. And then they show a flashback to the scene where she first saw him. lol.

Yeah that's exactly why I didn't like it much either. It feels like it's body horror made for the dumbest people you know.
But... The ending.. Kind of got me. That's when it felt like it fully accepted it was just a dumb horror comedy, without any great message.
That and Qualley in the nude. I mean, it's not all bad. But it certainly isn't good either.
Its message was very on the nose...but it 100% knows that.
I do have a problem when films insult the intelligence of the audience, but only when I think the movie thinks it's being much smarter than it actually is. It goes so far at the end I think it was very self aware.

Idk if it does all the time. Like with the scene DiPro talks about... If it does, it certainly waste a lot of time on shit scenes being dumb, which is still kind of the same end result for me.

A Kevin Smith film in 2025 lol
lost all respect i had left for him when he lost all that weight.
For a movie called The Substance, it certainly lacks any.
hah, just thought of that now. i'm a genius.
writing on par with the movie

Movie isn't even trying to pretend it's got a deeper meaning or anything. Like that scene dipro is talking about... It's not meant to be a shocking twist for the audience, it's only about the character having her decision being plastered over her.
I mean her actions after seeing the end of the road speak for themselves.
Everything is bare and in your face. If anything it made me like it even more. There are movies that do pretend to be shocking and smart (Ex Machina) that have nothing behind it either. The Substance throws slime in your eyes and rubs it all over. The ending is so excessive it's fantastic.
I saw in the theater too. Maybe that helped.

It appears people are excited for Gladiator 2 on Friday. Most of the matinee options near me are filling up already.
There's a big difference between being explicit and throwing subtlety out the window to make a point and having no value at all.
Paul Mescal can only play sad/reserved/laid back characters. Might be his eyes, even when he's angry and yelling he looks half asleep. Does not have the range to play a leader type role, big miscast for gladiator 2.
Denzel was great.
Denzel was great.
I'm surprised by the negative reaction to The Substance on here. I didn't like it because of the body horror aspects but I thought the rest of the film was good. Not every film's message has to be subtle.

I'm not saying that not being subtle = bad scenes.
It just so happens there's quite a few very bad scenes in this film, which beats you over the head with its message.
As I said with my first post about it here, the ending somehow saved it for me, and that certainly isn't subtle either. But it's fun. Something the diner scene lacks, and the scenes of the old hag eating and reaction to the younger version on TV and so on. Even the costume was low key bad there.
Overall very mid film. Some nice highs, and some really bad lows.

I think most people in here like it... and that is why you can't trust most people.
It would have made a banging 100 minute film imo. But it isn't and it's not.
Speaking of good, shorter films! I watched My Old Ass which was very surpisingly good despite Aubrey Plaza barely being in it. The kid who plays the main character is gonna be the next Florence Pugh/Cailee Spaeny type #trajectory actress over the next few years imo.
I also enjoyed Saturday Night. I have no idea or interest in whether it was accurate but it was fun, chaotic and as a bonus it continued my own personal Willem Dafoe season unexpectedly. It really plays into the "nobody likes Chevy Chase" thing everyone has going on, too. Nice cameo from JK Simmons' large prosthetic cock that involves him.

also the trailers looked awful.
By FortuneFaded Go To PostSmile 2 on distros.Yeah, been looking out for that one. The original was a "pleasant" surprise and the idea for the second looked intriguing, haven't even seen a full trailer because I didn't want to get spoiled.
Just finished it. Good shit. Naomi Scott was great. Add it to the list Martins.
