Yes, it's the beginning of the year and this thread starts all over again with horrible takes on the purest art form known to man
So what are your faves of 2023? I haven't seen most of the supposedly top-tier films yet, so I think I'm gonna start watching some soon innit

was watching batman, and man, it always hurts to look back at promising actors who died young

By Perfect Blue Go To PostIncredible film
Yeah, it’s amazing. Proper 9/10 shyt right there
The no man’s land sequence is incredible, but the last 15 mins are even better.
Watched Close Encounters this afternoon. Actually a bit of a slog, more so than I remember. Great to see François Truffaut though.
Good letterboxd review.

By RAThasReturned Go To PostThe Menu is funny because you cast Anya Taylor-Joy and expect me to believe that she'd eat a two pattie burger and all those fries and take your film seriously. There had to be a better way of making a black comedy about uppity-rich-multi course cuisine experiences. I also think it's some interesting casting to have her as the protagonist in a movie about eating in general.I think the movie only takes itself seriously during the first third, then it becomes pretty on the nose, but successfully so imo. It was a fun time.
The thing about the ATJ character I found more distracting was that the fact that she's an escort is supposed to be somewhat of a subtle revelation (not a complete mystery but a somewhat surprising turn of events that has relevance to the story), when from the first scene she is dressed in default Hollywood hooker wardrobe, leaning on a concrete pillar, smoking a cigarette and especially those hollywood hooker boots.
I think they could've done better, but nothing about the movie is subtle or serious so it makes sense once the setup is out of the way.
Happy '25 lads

Yeah absolutely loved it.

It has been out since november lad but i missed it in cinemas. I assume you mean La Passion de Dodin Bouffant.
Watched Beau is Afraid over the weekend. Interesting and entertaining first hour.
Unfortunately, despite being a big fan of nearly every actor in the picture, the succeeding two hours could not elevate or justify anything I'd seen overall and I was happy to see the credits roll. Did nothing for me.

You’re right, it is strange to say there have been no interesting movies made in decades

Second film of 2024 is Richard Ayode’s Submarine. Very good, even if the ending was a bit of a copout. Loved this bit.
My mother is worried I have mental problems. I found a book about teenage paranoid delusions during a routine search of my parents' bedroom.
My first film of 2024 is Notes on a Scandal (2006), was an enjoyable enough melodrama. Superb acting from Cate Blanchett and Judi Dench (whose character is just deliciously good to watch). Smartly written too, went places I didn't expect. Sometimes, it's just fun to see actors/actresses try and blow each other off the screen, lol

Then don’t cry about not making the thread
You can’t have it both ways, brother
Only those blessed with budo can
Finally watched the new Turtles movie.
Thought it was pretty good, liked the Turtles voices, Jackie as Splinter was great, art style was dope, soundtrack was on point.
Solid 7.5/10

I watched that Jennifer Lawrence, No Hard Feelings on Netflix last night and that is a Sony picture. I noticed a bunch of their stuff was right on the front page.
This movie was dumb fun for 100 minutes from a former US The Office writer. JLaw has entered her Kate Winslet phase of being nude in everything now I guess.

Yeah
The result is Zack Snyder’s “Rebel Moon: Part One — A Child of Fire,” part one of a two-part original film that cost $166 million, dropped in its second week to #9 after initially taking first place.
2nd film of 2024 was a rewatch of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (hadn’t seen it since its cinema release), a film so bad that I can only give it two positives really:
1) the suit. I LOVE the look of Spidey’s suit in this way more than the recent ones, it’s comic-accurate and it just looks so good lol
2) the chemistry between Garfield and Stone is just lovely to watch on screen.
That’s it
2/5

By RAThasReturned Go To PostYeah
first film of 2024 was barbie. the best compliment i can give it is that they didn't fuck it up.
it was decent, it was fun for the most part, but seeing it in so many best-of-the-year lists is odd.
feel like doing a lanthimos marathon soon because i haven't seen any of his films.

Watched this last night:
Slapped so hard. Unreal action scenes - they really don't make them like they used to.
