By Crusher Go To PostI mean referee conspiracies have turned out real in other leagues. Is this British exceptionalism?
it’s victimhood writ large. If Arsenal had a striker on the pitch they might have scored.
It is very gammon-like to claim that corruption could never happen in the Premier League whilst it has happened in most other leagues in Europe. "Refs are just stupid and incompetent, they can't be bought because honourable British people".

.
It's pathetic, and some fans are really bad at remembering when it went their own teams way.
There is plenty of mistakes, but what is the greater conspiracy here?
Only gets more hilarious when United fans get involved. Is it Onana not giving away that obvious penalty against Wolves, that would have made it even? Or the Bruno goal against City last season, where Rashford should have been called offside? that is just off top of my head, I am sure there is more, cause there always is and I am sure the same goes for Arsenal.
Some goes against some goes your way... It's shit and I wish VAR would be better, but overall VAR is by far a net positive.

Of course it could happen. There is just no evidence of it.
Maybe I will claim Jackson, Sterling and Sanchez are paid off by Brentford, to perform absolutely shit and have them be above Chelsea in the fight for midtable. Cause it could happen and players have been paid off before.
Much too hungover to suffer through a 1-0 defeat to Luton. It's a terrible disease I have - being a pintman.

It’s very new world order to say that a goal that is televised to millions and then is subjected to four or five minutes of intense reviewed scrutiny is going to be corrupt in nature.
One of my least favourite things about modern fandom is victimhood. Everyone cries conspiracy. It’s just shit refereeing.
By Punished Go To PostWhat's the deal with Luton wearing orange shirts? Used to be white back in my day.It used to be orange in the 70s too: http://www.historicalkits.co.uk/Luton_Town/Luton_Town.htm
Corruption is a possibility, but It's much more likely to be incompetence and inconsistency. Decisions are subjective to the person making them.
It wouldn't be a problem if the referees were the sole arbiters, but VAR has fucked it. They get multiple replays at different angles but can't make consistent decisions.

For real, it ain't that deep
VAR was supposed to solve all these refereeing controversies, but there’s two things people don’t seem to realise:
a) Most football laws are subjective and there’s always going to be those occasional 50 / 50 calls where one side is going to feel outrageously aggrieved no matter which direction they go in.
b) The referees who run VAR are still humans, which means no matter who you put back there, they’ll still make mistakes.
I’m tired of people saying there’s some magical solution to VAR where everyone will be happy. All VAR does is slow matches down, make fans more hesitant to celebrate goals, while doing little to nothing to prevent controversy and referee criticism. I wish it’d never have been introduced.
So wind ya necks in with the insults and name-calling.

Not really a stretch to think it's corruption, happened in plenty of other leagues and we know our refs are being paid by nation states to go ref in other leagues. Not saying it is that but you can never really rule it out.
Think the bigger issue is that the PGMOL is a crap organisation and just exists to look after its own rather than worry about doing a good job. That interview with Mike Dean pretty much proved that's their mindset.

is there any analysis on the % of "correct" decisions made by var vs. traditional refereeing?
i wouldn't hate the slowdown if there was a substantial improvement, but doesn't feel like there is

Just think it's basic incompetence. It's a shit fucking job and anyone that would actually be able to do it well is getting paid better doing somehting that doesn't attract death threats every weekend.

Sometimes there's no consistency call to call, even within the same game.
While there's no evidence refs have been paid off, like bold says, they are still human and the nature of their job means they are still subject to outside influence like everyone else. Whether that's favouring certain people or clubs under certain circumstances, or feeling under pressure by them or some of their public statements.
I'm in favor of VAR bad think there's good implementations, bu my main issue with the system like I've expressed before, is that the refs on the booth are more interested in protecting the main ref's decision and performance than making the correct call, and we absolutely have evidence of that because they've publicly said as much.
As far as fans go, it's just a game. Using hyperbole to express how the world is against you when things are going bad (or using it to praise your team and players when things are going well) is part of the emotion of the game, and the narratives we create to share the moment to moment.
It ain't that deep or serious.

I am sure there are plenty or some being made.

from a quick search. But obviously the ones they get wrong sticks out even more, when there has been a video review or the option...
Just from looking at the matches I watch, there is easily way more correct calls. That might be my own bias, but I think it's pretty clear to see.
Worst Liverpool has played this season probably. Nothing is happening. TAA and Chobo are complete passengers. Luton close to scoring every time they go forward.
Gomez as LB was hilariously bad.

Would have counted
Miss of the season, and it's mental that it's not even slightly surprising that he missed it. Just loses his mind on open goals.

Not even made them throw themselves in front of anything, they're just having to hold their positions
Shame Luton couldn’t hang on. But they’d have took a point pre match for sure.
Just hope things click for them and they can get a run of games going.
