The Spurs with Duncan playing and the Mavs with Dirk playing both lost twice in the first round as the higher seed. The difference is that as the higher seed, the Spurs were 14-2 and the Mavs were 5-2. And the only other Spurs first round loss as the higher seed came in 2011 when Dirk won a ring, while both of Dirk's came before 2011 (they lost to the Spurs as the higher seed in 2010), so it's not like people were giving Duncan a pass because he already had a ring... he just didn't lose in the first round very often. As the lower seed with him playing, the Spurs went 2-1 in round 1 and Dirk's teams went 2-6, and Dirk's teams also just missed the playoffs six times, so it's not like the Mavs overachieved as a lower seed either.
Like don't get me wrong, Dirk was extremely underrated and blamed way too much for his teammates being bad at the time, but there was no double standard going there. People just saw that the Spurs were god tier both in the regular season and playoffs and the Mavs were not and blamed Dirk for it, because that's what people did and continue to do when star players keep losing early in the postseason regardless of whether it's actually their fault (see also: Embiid).
