I don't really care about this conference rivalry stuff (fuck every other team in the east) but to be fair the east has had a lot more injury issues this season. The Knicks the sixers the pacers and to a lesser extent the bucks Cavs and the Hawks are all better teams than their records indicate.

I mean i don't really care about it other than it just makes it harder for my team to win or get into the playoffs. Being in a worse conference would be nice. Also, having a new generational talent in the same conference is long-term bad news.

The East vs West records could have some other factors that help explain it, like West road trips just being harder (elevation, distance) than East road trips. You could also make other arguments like how the somewhat slightly different style that East teams have is better suited for playoffs, etc.

One of the worst owners of the east got Jordan because an owner in the west already had Drexler, so even then, it balances out.

I definitely think its ownership/management that explains the gap historically. When I think of a a western conference owner I think of a disruptor tech bro when I think of an eastern conference owner I think old money fail son. Also the added scrutiny of running a team on the east coast (because we're not all casuals) lends itself to making short sighted moves.

East is flooded with owners who couldn't care any less. They make their money, and lots of it. Look at Detroit, Orlando, Charlotte, Chicago, Washington. The ones that do have ownership that care, like Indiana, there are rules that prevent them from being able to offer someone enough money to choose to go there.

Since I started watching basketball in 2001, Charlotte has always been a meme. Detroit, Orlando, and Chicago had a small window where they were great but Charlotte-tier outside of that. For years Orlando tried to make a big 3 of Vuc, Gordon, and Fournier a thing. Couldn't keep Dwight or Shaq, wasted T-Mac, if the rumors are true could have had Tim Duncan but fumbled that. I sometimes forget Washington even has a pro team.

Knicks were ass for two decades because Dolan couldn't stop forcing his way into decisions. Leon must have some very powerful friends cuz the only time you hear about Dolan now is when he's banning some rival from MSG.

Bad owners in the East and a lot of teams operate under the self inflicted pressure to do build as fast as possible cause they think the fans arent patient. I think the Lakers are the only west team that has crazy pressure to build ASAP, everybody else just does things at their own pace. Look at all the hoops the Sixers were jumping through all the years, with all their awful trades that led nowhere. The Knicks didn't turn around until they started building slowly with a plan, and even then they almost made the mistake of trading for Mitchell.

I think they wanted Mitchell, they traded RJ, IQ and Grimes a year later while keeping the picks that would have otherwise gone out in a Mitchell trade. Probably came down to them thinking nobody else had an offer, he was traded right after RJ got the extension.

They obviously wanted Mitchell it's just bad reporting that has everybody thinking that Grimes was the sticking point. The Knicks wanted to use their young players to lessen the pick compensation but Utah was like fuck that we still want all the picks. The Knicks wisely hung on to their picks because they knew there would still be work to do.

Also the Knicks didn't tamper any more than any other NBA team does nor were they more blatant about it. The only reason they got in trouble was because Mark Cuban got mad and complained to the league.

I feel like signing the assistant that Mitchell was closest to, then your FO attending playoffs games... isn't exactly keeping it close to your chest.
