Played a couple hours this morning. I’m liking it, it feels like a Bethesda RPG. Combat and movement feels much better than F4/76.
I wanted that authentic PS3/360 era Bethesda jank though, so I’m playing it on the Steam Deck. It’s surprisingly playable, in that endearingly cinematic 24FPS average that you’d expect from travelling through DC in Fallout 3. Wouldn’t recommend it though, obviously. It fucking chugs.
Doesn’t look bad though considering it’s on lowest settings. Should look great on my pc.

By inky Go To PostIt seems like they really took to heart some feedback from F4 and focused on building a world that gives more weight to your choices and character build. It's all about giving you avenues to play out certain archetypal fantasies like the dusty space western, or the bounty hunter crave, corporate spy or just explorer and surveyor, and building the story and systems around that, but the amount of different landmasses to traverse is a different vibe from Skyrim where it's just mountains as far as the eye can see.
most important bit for me. who cares about shitty procedurally generated planets or whatever. this is the meat.
I always felt the exploration and distractions in Skyrim was 99% of the fun tbh, role-playing has never really done much for me. Always end up just being a boring cunt saint, especially if there's a morality level like in Mass Effect. Hoping BG3 changes that a bit but have my doubts.
Really do like the low tech sci-fi aesthetic, and I'd give it an extra point for the logo being great. Lighting on PC version looks surprisingly nice, huge upgrade on Series S though I'm blind to the intricacies. Not a fan of the panning blur on the Series S version, no idea if that's a setting or a limitation.

It got worse the more I played it. I was getting 30-40 in the starting area, then 30ish. Now in the first big city, 20ish with drops to 16 that I’ve seen.
Probably gonna play on pc and figure out moonlight/sunshine streaming for it.
By Laboured Go To PostSeems like HDR is pretty much borked atm on PC?There's a DLSS mod out?
Anyways DLSS and FOV all nicely fixed already.

Don't have a PC or Xbox so I can't play it at any high settings :(

Install this - https://www.nexusmods.com/site/mods/502
Then install this (and follow the instructions as you'll need to download an NVidia DLSS .dll file) - https://www.nexusmods.com/starfield/mods/111
So I started off by turning around and going back down into the mine and stripping it of every fucking mineral I could find. Have it, Argos cunts.

Black point at 1 nit, especially in a space game and 2x especially if you're playing on OLED, should be an actual jailable offense.
Fucking atrocious.
Fucking atrocious.
By DY_nasty Go To Postvery concerning lol k
Kind of is tbf
Gonna test out play anywhere on the S at work. Inky saying Neux Atlantis = Citadel got me

This right here tho. Shits actually gray on my OLED. No HDR and having to rely on AutoHDR is also trash.
Watched a couple of hours. Don't think I'd have played it even if I could tbh, just doesn't look like what I'd enjoy for more than five hours.
Bethesda space-faring RPG sounds like it should be a guaranteed hit personally, but it looks like a complete grind to me. Will watch some post-intro footage and see if the general routine of the game is more appealing.

The HDR is fucking garbage. Some of the worst I've seen. It's not a new thing anymore, there's no fucking excuse for it.
Everything is far too bright.

I was in with NMS since day 1, min maxing trade routes and shit back when Sean Murray was about to get punted into the Sun. Nothing can take that away from me. So when I hear this is a grind, I keep it in context lol.
The first few ours of this on Kreet flew by. Atlantis could be a problem.
The menus are atrocious though.

Atrocious may have been too strong there’s just a bunch of them. I’m sure you’ll get used to it, game just released a few hours ago. But off jump it’s a lot.
Turns out I'm a whore for materials to the extent that I fucked up my lungs by huffing too much Argon. Pls halp.

Thank you lads for beta-testing this stuff btw. Hoping there's an inventory mod by the time the delayed release comes around.
By Laboured Go To PostIf people want a description of the various DLSS presets: https://www.reddit.com/r/pcgaming/comments/111ecc3/comment/j8kojs6/Found a better description from the plug-in author who references the DLSS programming pdf from Nvidia:
The programming PDF gives a small description for each preset:
Preset A (intended for Perf/Balanced/Quality modes): An older variant best suited to combat ghosting for elements with missing inputs (such as motion vectors)
Preset B (intended for Ultra Perf mode): Similar to Preset A but for Ultra Performance mode
Preset C (intended for Perf/Balanced/Quality modes): Preset which generally favors current frame information. Generally well-suited for fastpaced game content
Preset D (intended for Perf/Balanced/Quality modes): The default preset for Perf/Balanced/Quality mode. Generally favors image stability
Preset E (Unused)
Preset F (intended for Ultra Perf/DLAA modes): The default preset for Ultra Perf and DLAA modes.
Anyone else playing the Steam version with a controller and have their start and select buttons reversed?
I can fix it by remapping them but I don’t understand why it’s like that.

By Kibner Go To PostValve pushed out a Steam Deck update for Starfield, so make sure you have the latest firmware.Yeah got that last night before playing. Apart from the performance that I expected to be bad, I’m having no real issues with it on the Deck.
I installed the potato mod from the Nexus earlier to see if it improved things. Seemingly it just reduced the resolution scale to 35%. So I fucked that off. 75% looks alright, 60% looks worse but it’s okay. Anything lower is awful.
Honestly the first game I’ve used FSR in and not disliked the image quality too.
Think this pretty much has its hooks in me now. Decided to destroy the pirate captain guy with facts and logic.
Menus are definitely an issue. Need to get into the habit of backing out of them by holding Tab instead of one by one.
Really thought that Todd saying SkyUI was one of his favorite mods would mean he learned something but I was wrong. Thing is they are also not snappy which makes it tedious. But inventory is quicker to wrap your head around than the pip boy imo.
My guess is people just hit loot all instead of ignoring big mass items leading to overencumberance right away, but with no icons to differentiate weapons, suits, etc. From ammo and the like, it's not as obvious at first as you familiarize yourself with every single item.
Definitely tests your self control right away.
...
Just one question about the DLSS mod. As long as I set scale to the equivalent of Quality (67%) I should turn dynamic resolution setting off, right? Dyn Res being the "Auto" setting in this case.
I was playing with preset F last night, but I'll try D today.

Just found a lvl 10 Terrormorph on Kreet laying into some pirates. Will also try to destroy it with facts and logic grenades.
Saw how easy the Kreet mission would have been with a boost pack lol. Feels like an almost must-have skill. But then I feel that way about a lot of the skills. Kind of amazed we only get 1 point per level.
They did that for a lot of skills tbf. Can't really sneak without the stealth perks now. Can't do much lockpicking without the security one, or fly a ship that well, scan or craft weapon mods, etc.
I reckon once you get to level 25-30sih you can branch out a bit more, but early on you gotta really pick your playstyle and I guess the faction missions or activities best suited to your build.
Also, using scanning regularly on foot or on your ship might alleviate much of the menu pains people are having. You can travel, land and find loot from the scan view much more easily.

I use scan a lot and also put a point into the perk cus why not. Seems early game that putting points into ground combat stuff isn't exactly necessary, which is a good decision I think.
