Phil spent 8 billion cause he was worried about starfield console exclusive to ps5. Then ps5 got huge exclusive right at the same time without spending a dime. How does Jimbo hold all these Ws.
The industry will learn no lessons from BG3. It is known.
What it is, is just uncompromising in the ways most modern, big publisher AAAs aren't, by a very talented group of devs that gave the game what it required: time, scope, production values without splitting its attention.
A big sticking point is just the sheer amount of options and reactivity. That's not core to every genre, but it stands out when games like sad dad of war are so scared of letting players think for a second. People appreciate that Larian just throws them out there and says: fuck it, you figure it out. Try not to die. Subconsciously that's also throwing Twitter devs for a loop.
That's what devs are most scared of. That somehow audiences get to "dictate" they want these things when their pitch is the same 'ol assembly line product as cheaply and fast as they can make it, with the most thought put behind the monetization layer on top.
By Xpike Go To Postplease don't expect us to make original good gamesIt's not even that original. Larian definitely trading on the name recognition to scale their ambition (thanks Bioware lol).

By C4-621 Go To PostRviola did you finish FF ?no the sidequests kill my interest
I should stop doing them.
Game runs pretty well maxed so far, but I haven't made it to the titular city and it's bound to be demanding, so these optimized settings will come in handy.

By JesalR Go To Postfeel like you, and a lot of others, are really not understanding who makes these decisions, because it sure as fuck isn't "devs"its a nice narrative tho - and you can get to "dunk" on the devs you think suck because making video games easy.
By NiceGuy Go To PostIs this the bit where sy spends $60 on a game he knows he won't like so he can slag it off?Nailed on. Misery loves company
By JesalR Go To Postfeel like you, and a lot of others, are really not understanding who makes these decisions, because it sure as fuck isn't "devs"The rank and file devs don't, not at Larian either, but plenty of leadership at these studios still fall under the devs moniker, and plenty of their poor decisions are self inflicted. These twitter takes also acting like Larian sprung up the ground a 400 strong AAA studio like they haven't been toiling away for years and years with similar games to be in that position. (And yes, I know the original twitter thread was about betting it all in a massive game and how risky that is, but plenty of other takes and articles after that is what I'm referencing).
There are grunt studios out there that do nothing else but what a publisher demands of them, and there are others (like Bioware which is the obvious example) where they were in the best position to do exactly what this game is doing, by all accounts had freedom to pursue their own goals, and failed over and over trying to chase trends, rejig their games away from their core base and basically buckled under that mismanagement.
I think you're vastly vastly overestimating the freedom any studio beneath EA has received for the last two decades.
As for Twitter takes, I'm still yet to see one that's actually complaining from a developer

Bioware's issues were very well documented, and a lot of them were things their studio heads chose to do.
By NiceGuy Go To PostThey let Respawn and DICE tank their own sales with idiotic release dates tbfJust recently Respawn, self-admittedly, had freedom to delay the game for polish and they chose not to. Not mandated again.

In a new documentary charting 20 years of Obsidian Entertainment, studio founder Feargus Urquhart has revealed a surprising tidbit about upcoming single-player RPG adventure, Avowed. According to Urquhart, he initially pushed for the game to have multiplayer co-op, before it was acquired by Microsoft.Naah
While the game has since evolved to become a single-player adventure game, it was initially believed that a co-op title would be more appealing to publishers, and therefore easier to invest in.
‘It was a more interesting game to publishers,’ Urquhart explains in the documentary. ‘When you’re asking for $50, $60, $70, or $80 million, you’ve got to have something interesting to talk about, and multiplayer made it interesting

I assume he meant the funding from Early Access which presumably a lot of people bought on the strength of the Baldur's Gate name. Though probably not as many as the people who bought it based on Larian's track record, and it just being a CRPG.
Hope so anyway for his sake.

Suits only like proven concepts and safe bets. And creating something quickly and with a lot of outsourcing needs someone with clear vision and extremely capable project management skills at the helm who doesn't buckle under pressure for 3-4 years. You hear about ambitious projects failing left and right. There are a bunch of studios trying and failing before their games are ever announced.
It's been pretty fun and cool, so far. Can't wait till next year where they should be opening the BYOC up to 5,000 machines, adding vendors, opening it to the public, and hopefully get back to having some developer talks.
By s y Go To PostThey said I'd hate Skyrim. 50 hours ez eat a dick slaent.
they just thought you had standards
tbf Larian almost couldn't lose. They inherited a great IP and ruleset, got free money up front, and got passes for missing deadlines.
I am just glad they did deliver an epic game.

If we say that about Larian what are we supposed to say about Cloud Imperium Games and Star Citizen?

Its still FF16 for me because I've been a bit too unwell to continue my BG3 run if I can even call it a run yet lol.
But I suspect its gonna be between AC and BG3.
I'm not sure if the post credits scene is related to finishing them all, but it was labeled as "secret" on youtube?

I keep forgetting about dave the diver, I'll try it soon. No way I won't like it
I’ve only played two 2023 games so probably TOTK. I suspect by the end of the year it will probably be BG3 or maybe cyberpunk expansion
