But they had the superior product for probably 4-5 years before eFootball became a thing, yet sales never matched the quality. EA being so wealthy as to price out Konami from contracts with leagues and licenses really puts into perspective how foul this whole industry has become.
EA's hoarding of licences has literally meant the death of countless sports franchises. I would sort of draw an equivalent with what MS is trying to do with publishers, price out the competition and "win". The cost being the death of innovation and competition.
The quality of the FIFA games in gameplay alone is absurdly lacking. Even modes have been neglected just to funnel people into Ultimate Team. Stagnant franchise for over 10 years.
That is why those who were lucky enough to experience the earlier generations oughta be happy, we had it all. The younger generation can not even fathom it or compare the current gens to those eras, they only know the current state of it all and lack that perspective.
Even something like Basketball had tons of variations in terms of gameplay styles, modes, aesthetics yadda yadda yadda.
You had the PSP NBA games, Street, Live, 2k and various other licensed versions. It was a great time to just try a different take of the sport from different development teams. Now not only have the licenses fallen to one or two players in the industry, we have to take into consideration the high costs associated with even developing these games so most don't even bother.

Just today during the EA presentation for a football(soccer) "game", they spent most of their time talking about the licenses they secured and the length of contracts. It's so dumb, and we were bombarded with the usual buzz words like hypermotion 69 and marketing galore...we got 1 second by my count of gameplay. 1 second and I am not joking.
