Also, the difference between one public school in one district and another in a town over can be stark. Wherever there is a single high school in a rich town you're guaranteed it'll be borderline a rich private school. Always blew my mind how nice Lake Oswego (Kevin Love's school) was compared to any of the Portland public schools just a few miles apart.
My nephews school is a block away from the projects, but it's one of the top public schools in the city and your Pre-K test scores determine if you're going there or not since it's grades 1-12. Needless to say, there are no kids from the projects a block away that go there.

I went to two different school districts, one from a poorer city from elementary to middle and then a better blue ribbon school for HS. We lived on the border of the smaller town so I was able to switch to their school district for HS. My middle school had 4000 or so kids while my HS had maybe 400. Everyone in my HS class graduated, meanwhile something like 600-680 of the 900 kids graduated of my class from the HS I would have gone.
They counted 4th and 5th grade as middle schoolers as well for some reason. So middle school was 4-8.

My nephews school does something like that too, they had a graduation from 6th grade and he's now technically a high schooler at his school.
There was another school district I could have gone to cause my father worked at the HS but they decided against sending me there cause of how bad it was even though my father could have kept tabs on me. Just way too violent and just googled, it has a 60% graduation rate.
