By Willkiller Go To PostHixx watching Dog Soldiers, Wooden watching American Werewolf in LondonOh man, now there's a movie series I haven't thought in a while. What a weird trilogy, I'm pretty sure I have them all on DVD.
Won't someone watch Ginger Snaps?
By DerZuhälter Go To PostWatched Oppenheimer. Liked it but didn't love it. I thought of Costner's JFK while watching the last act.At the risk of starting a list war, what would keep it out of a top 5? Nolan only has like 10 films. It was certainly much better than his 2 previous efforts
Enjoyed the second act the most. While I do understand why some might argue that this is one of Nolan's best I due to the most compelling character work I'd have to admit it's currently not even in my top 5 of favourite Nolan movies.
Yes there are some thought provoking ideas and critical discourse one could have after the movie but I just wasn't that enthralled by the subject matter due to the inevitability of the scientific progress in question. Remove Oppenheimer from the picture in the real life events and most of it would have happened the same way therefore I just cannot relate with the moral question.
His best for me were the prestige and memento (nostalgia in effect possibly?)
What about you n8

Haven’t seen Following and Oppenheimer, but the rest:
10. Tenet - incomprehensible for the most part, and even more disappointingly not even a visual or technical marvel like some of Nolan’s other films. Only seen it once, but it suffers from an uncharismatic lead and villain performance, far too much exposition, and a climactic action sequence that is genuinely dull.
9 - The Dark Knight Rises - fun Hardy performance and a great opening sequence, but you can tell this was ‘one for the studio’. Just doesn’t hang together in terms of its ideas, and there’s an energy lacking in it for the most part.
8 - Insomnia - solid thriller with one of Pacino’s best modern day performances and a keen sense of tonal control. It’s a good flick, and probably Nolan’s least-Nolany.
7 - Batman Begins - sensational first hour that slips somewhat into standard superhero fare beyond that. Good cast, good production design, lovely batmobile.
6 - Memento - getting into the really good stuff here. Clever film that highlights the power of editing. Stomach clencher of an ending. Rewards you watching it a second time. Pearce is great.
5 - The Prestige - not quite as hot on this as most seem to be now (lots seem to think it’s his best?) but still wildly entertaining, with a couple of great performances. Love the ending in particular.
4 - Dunkirk - Hoyt van Hoytema masterclass, some really loud shit that popped in IMAX. I love the spareness of it, I think it’s constructed well, and aside from a few suspect lines (and line readings, one of Nolan’s weaker casts) it’s a visual feast.
3 - The Dark Knight - still entertaining as fuck; Ledger, Oldman and Eckhart all bring it. Prologue is kwaliteh. Millions of words have been written about it. Just works. Still runs alongside Spiderman 2 and Spider-verse 1 as the best comic book movie.
2 - Interstellar - love really is the most powerful force.
1 - Inception - I just think it’s such a well orchestrated blockbuster. Conceptually interesting, edited really well, great score, good cast. The best that Nolan’s ever matched technical stuff to an emotional story. Love it. Worked at a cinema when it came out and would go watch the hallway fight every single time.

Prestige is gud. Memento is gud. Plus he's made some other stuff. Dunkirk, DK Rises, Tenet and Insomnia are all bad. Now you know.
By n8 dogg Go To PostSurprised by how polarising Dunkirk seems to be. Think it’s fucking great myself like.I guess watching it on a iPad is not the same as watching it on IMAX.
🥰
Oh yes Inception was quite good!
Maybe I'd have loved Interstellar more if he just disintegrated at the end lol
Or if I believed in love
Edit: Fwiw (not much coming from me) I think you'll enjoy Oppenheimer

If it comforts you, it's only good in comparison to Dunkirk and Tenet.
objectively, nolan's best is memento. just an incredible well-made film.
my favourite one, however is interstellar. it has its faults, but the great performances, great visuals, and one of the all-time great soundtracks make up for it.
it has heart.

Went to see Barbie in a packed theater and then later went to see Oppenheimer in a packed IMAX. The ladies killed it! Oppenheimer was just so dull so dull. They blast the sound in that movie just to wake you up. So much talking, they wouldn’t stop talking, the absolute worst part of any Nolan movie is the center piece here.
Just so much talking, my god, absolutely zero feelings in this film there’s just no emotional journey at all. Like these people really wanted to see if they could make a bomb and that’s it. Then there’s this speed run on the politics of it, and bam it’s over. So consumed with its self important idea. Yeah sure they sprinkle a bit of guilt in there… just a bit.
It’s not even thought provoking, it’s just obvious. At least make me dread it, terrorize me. Just incredibly dull, everything, the characters everything.
Watching it after Barbie was hilarious though. Man on horse!

Nolan Ranking:
N8 Dogg is on point. I would switch Interstellar and Memento and would put Oppi somewhere around 6 or 7 personally.

Didn't love Dunkirk or Interstellar in the theater, but those are two that are much better on rewatches on Blu-ray. Dunkirk really is very, very good.
Inception is Die Hard for a lot of people and I totally get it. Very re-watchable and fun.

I didn't watch Dunkirk in the theatre, falls a bit flat at home. Still decent.

By reilo Go To PostShoulda released it two weeks earlier or a month laterTwo weeks earlier would have put it against Indiana Jones, in hindsight it would have been a good move but no one expected Indy to do so bad.
Mission Impossible
But Mission Impossible is now getting beat daily by Sound Of Freedom.

Mission Impossible wasn't ready for the free advertisement meme of Barbenheimer.
It's still doing well but not Top Gun level.

a review in one sentence just for bud
mission: impossible - dead reckoning part one is nowhere near as good as its predecessor, as it doesn't have the efficiency, the pace, the brutality, the cleancut action, the tightness, the villain, and the orchestrated edited beauty, but instead relies too heavily on cgi in a few of its set pieces (the last one in particular); what it does have in its place is a dynamite new addition to the team in hayley atwell, who brings an outsider's energy to proceedings that serves the film well, a good sense of humour (atwell chief in establishing this, all looks and grabs and double crosses) and some fun supporting roles from wigham, klementieff and czerny - however, this cannot entirely compensate for the worst plot the series has ever had, a ludicrously overwrought stupid-sounding 'fear of ai' plotline (and a terribly dull and uncharismatic villain to boot), and a visibly ageing cruise who is verging on being too old for this shit, but just has enough in the bag to keep things entertaining (there's a great hour and a bit or so in here, starting from where the team get to the airport until the end of the rome chase).
a soft 7/10

Dead Reckoning would have been a 7/14 release. They moved it up 2 days to 7/12.
One week later you have Barbie and Oppenheimer on 7/21.
Barbenheimer as a unescapable meme is newish, but the release dates for both films were known by at least April 2022 based on what I saw on Google.
Hubris and stupidity from Paramount had them deadest on 7, then 9 days of box office returns before the counterprogramming of the 7/21 releases. Even based on the prior movies the M:I films are not big openers, they're leggy. Yes, there was hope for them that Maverick would bring in additional audiences, but even then it was 90 mil expected. It couldn't even reach that mark and it had the theaters to itself before the oncoming onslaught. So Dead Reckoning underperformed it opening weekend and got blown away by the what was right around the corner.
The high quality of Barbie and Oppeneheimer, plus the memes pushed these movies to even bigger heights. Dead Reckoning is a wrong place, wrong time situation that isn't helped by the lack of quality on its own merits.
And the bike stunt, hyped for years on end is hurt by the placement in the film and storytelling that lessens that moment too.
By RAThasReturned Go To PostThe movie isn't very good. The objective measurements to this don't really back that up though. An A from Cinemascore, A 96/94% on Rotten Tomatoes, and an 8.0 on IMDB. The quality of the movie doesn't really seem to be a factor on this one.
