Console wars on Paramount is a pretty good watch
Good reminder how hard the beef was between Nintendo and Sega. Nothing like it ever since lmao. Some of them dudes are still pissed at each other

Cool that Suzume is getting a wide release this weekend. I remember even the last Ghibli (Marnie) didn't even get a wide release, I saw it at the uni arthouse. Chalking this up to anime becoming more mainstream in the last decade.
Seeing a Jeanne Dielman - Raging Bull double bill tomorrow. Want to catch Renfield, Mario and Air at some point this week too.

cool. i think raging bull is scorsese's best film.
Fairly bemused after coming out of Jeanne Dielman. I do feel strongly about 'traditional gender roles' and the unfair burdens placed on women, but yeah, just bemused about the critical reception.
Did remind me of that Kavanagh poem:
Did remind me of that Kavanagh poem:
I have lived in important places, times
When great events were decided, who owned
That half a rood of rock, a no-man's land
Surrounded by our pitchfork-armed claims.
I heard the Duffys shouting "Damn your soul!"
And old McCabe stripped to the waist, seen
Step the plot defying blue cast-steel -
"Here is the march along these iron stones."
That was the year of the Munich bother. Which
Was more important? I inclined
To lose my faith in Ballyrush and Gortin
Till Homer's ghost came whispering to my mind.
He said: I made the Iliad from such
A local row. Gods make their own importance.
Bill Clinton is in the neighborhood and you're having to show your ID to cops with assault rifles to get near the cinema. Cool.
Had a week off work and watched some shit this week.
Bladerunner 2049: I was hesitant to watch this since I really enjoy the original. It pleasantly exceeded my expectations. The visuals alone are incredible, but the story itself was good too. Felt like it expanded nicely on the original without outright answering any of the big questions the original left open.
Cobra Kai S5: Meh, feel they should’ve cut this show short at S3 or S4.
Once Upon A Time In Hollywood: currently watching rn. This is fucking schlock, and not the good type. Someone take the camera off of Quentin. He’s done.

By Lupercal Go To PostThink Once Upon A Time In Hollywood might be his second best.No.
Love it, but it’s only his seventh or eighth best for me, Clive. Hell, maybe even his weakest (although as I say, still great).
Rewatched Incredibles 1 and 2 back-to-back. First one remains a classic but has not visually aged gracefully at all. I liked 2 a fair bit more than my first time on re-watch.
By FootbalIFan Go To PostMy god, that Super Mario movie was absolutely dreadfulSaw it yesterday. It's very much a kids movie, but for what it is I think they did a good job. Plenty of little easter eggs for big fans of the games.
I just wished they leveraged the game music a lot more.

Kill Bill was when the dying started.
Death Proof is when death happened.
Django was just rigor erectus
By FootbalIFan Go To PostMy god, that Super Mario movie was absolutely dreadfulBox office keeps getting insanely lowballed. Predicted 58 mil this weekend and ends up at 92 mil. There's a huge Mario gap somewhere in the analysis and it might be generational
or cultural? some of these deadline writers are old enough to remember japan panic
Business executives realize people like video games to an insanely unhealthy level
I watched it in Saturday, cutish movie but like, 90% of the entertainment is looking for Nintendo references

We're going into 40 years of Mario being one of the best selling video game characters. He's also the mascot for one the longest running video game companies. The people that were children when he was introduced have kids and in some cases grandchildren that are playing Mario video games.
I think the truth is film people just don't understand how big video games are. Hollywood would kill for the kind of exposure and numbers video games have.

It's overperforming like crazy. Movies with 100M$+ opening weekends on average drop 60% on it's second weekend, it's a great result if they only drops around 55%. Mario dropped just 41% from it's first weekend, internationally it dropped only 39%.
While that 58M$ prediction was low, the actual numbers are higher than even the most optimistic analysts could predict.
Two weeks ago there was talk about Mario having a shot at 1B$, now there's a possibility of 1.5B$ being in play.
Mario will most likely do more than Sonic 1, Sonic 2 and Detetive Pikachu put together.

Just watched the Super Mario Bros film from 1993 out of curiosity, what a piece of atrocious trash 😂
Hateful Eight is his only stinker. Not seen Death Proof, probably won't ever.
Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown and True Romance are his top bois for me.
Might rewatch Hateful Eight, see if I was wrong about it. Was wrong about Terminator 2 so it can happen.

Kang's entire multiversal shtick makes him so easy to recast and nobody saw Antman anyway.

I saw the Mario movie - it was my 3 year old kids first trip to the cinema and he had a good time. He enjoys watching me play the games and it was nice for me to take him to something that I also have a connection to rather than some shit like paw patrol or peppa pig
Film itself was mostly crap but was rescued by some funny moments mainly involving Bowser.
Dunno if it was because of the voice acting but a lot of the characters including Mario didn't feel like their video game counterparts to me

By Diego! Go To PostDunno if it was because of the voice acting but a lot of the characters including Mario didn't feel like their video game counterparts to meNintendo's design philosophy is to keep the main characters of their games as soulless as possible both so the player can imprint on them and they can be used versatilely in a range of concepts. Impossible in a movie, but Miyamoto still tried his damnedest. Even so, transplanting that character into a narrative is going to conflict with everyone's interpretation of the character by their nature
Martin Scorsese has locked his cut of Killers of the Flower Moon and Deadline can reveal that the final run time will be three hours and 26 minutes.Oh, look, he did find 20 minutes to ax. I knew you could do it Marty
