I'm still bemused that Jeanne Dielman jumped from like #70 to #1.
Also bemused at how many people don't have anything from the past 30/40 years.
Liang Zhao voted for himself in his list. Fair play.

Watched The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent last night.
It was pretty bad, apart from the Paddington 2 scene (pure kino) and Cage and Pascal’s surprisingly sweet chemistry together.

Started The Whale. Had to pause it to post how I laughed when it started with a Moby Dick essay. That famous Aronofsky subtlety.
I’m sorry but that film was laughably mediocre. About five scenes ended with Fraser eating something and crying or almost dying while someone shouts at him lmao.
Stagey to a fault; normally what makes an Aronofsky film worth watching, even weaker efforts like Noah, is some element of virtuosic cinema being present. That wasn’t evident here.
Other than some impressive prosthetic work, and spirited efforts from Fraser, Sink (despite being an aggressively irritating and poorly-written piece of shit) and Chau, there isn’t much going on here. I thought it was deeply shallow and empty. Characters routinely stopping on the threshold of the door to suggest inner conflict… what a movie.
Good performances from the cast overshadowed by a film lacking in purpose to be transformed into cinema. Misery porn with an overbearing score, overbearing themes and jesus, an overbearing ending.

Are you sure you didn’t watch Banshees instead?
By FortuneFaded Go To PostAre you sure you didn’t watch Banshees instead?
Banshees was a) not entirely trapped in a poorly lit room therefore eschewing the importance of visual imagery in film and b) was funny and self-aware unlike this, which is entirely sincere but terribly misguided.
the first scene hit too close to home for n8 imo
except instead of that little jesus boy, sub in dean.

One of the best movies ever.

One of the only scenes in the film with any daring or interest. Let him carry on jerking until he dies imo

It’s interesting visually, uses the camera to its advantage and isn’t poorly lit. There seems to be very, very little done in the stage to screen adaptation here. In fact, some close ups - one of film’s great advantages in regards to intensity and building empathy’s with characters - serves against it here because it’s actually better serving the story when you can see Fraser in all his glory.
And even if I did have a problem with that, the script would compensate. This doesn’t.
By FortuneFaded Go To PostNot concerned it takes place almost exclusively in one room?Bizarre attempt at a gotcha lol what are you doing?
if the whale was directed by kojima, it would be even less subtle. so just be happy with that.
brendan fraser would start out by saying 'i... i am a whale. this is the story of a whale' and then every character would refer to him as whale man. as he swallows every piece of food he will say 'this is for you (whatever old lover was called)'

not really. but it wasnt subtle at all, no. didnt bother me.
By n8 dogg Go To PostLowery though. Should know better. Pete’s Dragon is one of the best kids’ flicks in recent years.
Don’t think he really has a say in this one. It’s all Disney + shit

Y’all should see this if you get the chance. Sensational film.

The Whale has terrific performances and is a potent adaptation of a mediocre, brutish playscript. This is probably the best it could've gone. I enjoyed it plenty enough.
At least the film's upfront about its 'misery porn' trappings unlike a lot of other shit that pretends otherwise.

Watched Everything yesterday.
Two of the Korean cinema chains are rereleasing the Oscar films.
Felt a bit too long for me, but overall enjoyable.
The Chinese dialogue was dubbed only in Korean. I was able to read most of it but the subtitles were too quick when Weymond was talking to movie star Evelyn in the rain. Only caught about 30% of it. Can someone fill me in on the whole conversation.
