By Yurtlicious Go To PostI love Villeneuve but that was not very good honestlyYurt, no.... Not like this, not like this.
But I blame the ancient source material
Saw The Roundup yesterday.
What if The Rock was Korean in a Raid style action movie.
Pretty good 7.5/10

By Laboured Go To PostFine I'll watch it.It was pretty terrible
By Perfect Blue Go To Postindia didn't send in RRR for foreign picture. it wasn't eligible.
Geez, no Return to Seoul, Decision to Leave, or RRR.
By DiPro Go To Postindia didn't send in RRR for foreign picture. it wasn't eligible.Cheers, makes sense. Just saw when googling the shortlist.
Two Irish actors nominated each for Best Actor and Supporting Actor. Paul Mescal in particular was brilliant in Aftersun. Think it'll come down to Butler or Fraser for the former though. Elvis was a pile of shite but the Academy loves those kind of movies.
Keoghgan has a good chance with Supporting Actor tho.

Can't even begin to imagine the kind of deeply unsettling life crisis I'd have to be in to watch the Elvis movie.
By Laboured Go To PostCan't even begin to imagine the kind of deeply unsettling life crisis I'd have to be in to watch the Elvis movie.my mom wanted to see it.
My wife wanted to see it lmao.
It’s pretty okay but worth it just for the music. And unlike a disasterclass that was Blonde, Luhrmann actually has a genuine fondness and respect for the source material.

My brain utterly rejects Luhrmann's exuberance sort of like how I'd treat a loud toddler when I'm hungover.

By domino Go To PostTop Gun should winNo chance lol
By Laboured Go To PostBooI watched it a few weeks back. It was just hilariously overly violent.
By domino Go To PostTop Gun should win
it should but it won't
Elvis lol
Happy to be very wrong about EEAAO. Those bitter divorcees have turned a corner. We'll see if it wins anything
Also Seth Rogen snubbed. Honestly thought he might get it with Hirsch
LETS FUCKING GOOOOOOOO STEPHANIE HSUUUUUUU
Avatar not getting costume design means the academy is still kind of stupid. Of course only the male lead of Aftersun gets lauded, still five guys directing the best movies apparently
I will not be watching, even one joke about the Will Smith slap will be insufferable and there's going to be 24

By Perfect Blue Go To PostDon't work yourself into a shoot, brothers.
By n8 dogg Go To Post100% that EEAAO is getting Picture, Director, Actress, Sup Actor, Sup Actress and Original Screenplay noms. Maybe Editing and Cinematography too.
My noms guess is
Picture: EEAAO, Banshees, Tar, Fabelmans, Top Gun, Avatar, Elvis, All Quiet. (maybe Women Talking or Triangle of Sadness sneaks in too) 10/10
Director: Spielberg, Daniels, McDonagh, Luhrmann, and either Field or Cameron 4/5 - not surprised to see Ostlund here as the Academy usually goes for one foreign director nowadays but surprised it’s at Luhrmann’s expense
Actor: Farrell, Fraser, Butler, Nighy, and Mescal or Jackman 4.5/5
Actress: Blanchett, Yeoh, Deadwyler, Williams, Davis 3/5 here - Davis was probably a long shot and I didn’t count on the Riseborough PR campaign working lol, but Deadwyler been a favourite all year. Get ready for #OscarsSoWhite again
Sup Actor: Quan, Gleeson, Keoghan, Dano and Hirsch. Maybe Redmayne instead of one of the last two. 4/5 - happy to see my boy BTH in there
Sup Actress: Condon, Bassett, Curtis, Chau and Buckley (maybe Hsu instead of Buckley)4.5/5 - Hsu well deserved. Curtis getting in over her would have been a travesty
Your winner is likely one of the Best Editing nominees. I’d say EEAAO is the favourite, with Banshees not far behind.
Will never understand the way Best Director noms get made. Figured there'd be a more critical eye on technical achievement.
By reilo Go To PostWill never understand the way Best Director noms get made. Figured there'd be a more critical eye on technical achievement.
I think it’s often a combination of technical virtuosity, arthouse credential, performances and visuals. Considering it’s directors who vote for the BD noms, they’re probably pissed off that Cameron gets given carte blanche to do what he wants and doesn’t need to direct any strong performances either lol.
I think Cameron should be there, but someone like McDonagh or the Daniels will benefit from having written it, from getting such wonderful performances out of the cast (eight nominations of the twenty acting ones from those two films) and for taking a big step up visually; there’s a huge difference aesthetically between Banshees and Billboards / Swiss Army and EEAAO, whereas Avatar is on the surface much of the same. Some people do seem to conflate cinematography with direction too, especially when you look at the likes of Spielberg who is so sure of what he wants to do with a camera, or Fincher or Nolan who have the reputation of trying to do everything themselves (stupid in Nolan’s case because his work with Hoyt compared to Pfister is night and day).
I think the first Avatar got a director nom because of Titanic runoff. Cameron's directing these movies in a way literally no one has before, capturing actor performance and setting up shots after the fact, and looking at an AR world around him on set through an ipad
