I liked the second half of Mutant Mayhem a lot more than the first half. Like how much they deviated from the formula, definitely curious what a sequel would look like
Mikey did get shafted though. Donny basically got all his heat and his own

Made it about 50 minutes into Rebel Moon before falling asleep. Consciously. Thankfully. Snyder needs an intervention.

Watched the first 5-10 minutes of Rebel Moon and it was more than enough to know the kind of shit show it was going to be.
27.6M$ 3 day weekend for Aquaman but the most shocking thing is that the number two at box office is Wonka on it's second weekend.
Why is it shocking? Because both Aquaman and Wonka are Warner Bros movies and WB are going to put The Colour Purple on theaters tomorrow.
In the space of 10 days, Warner Bros is releasing blockbusters and 2 of them are musicals.
There has to be some overlap in interest in those movies and it's probably taking away audience.
WB has been making some baffling decisions.

By Perfect Blue Go To Postso goodI was extremely impressed how they managed to capture Murakami's pace. It's really difficult to do where everything is so character focused. But I guess that's why you gotta give it a 3-hour runtime lol. Wonderful movie.
By Xpike Go To Postlol people watching zack Snyder films in 2023do you know?
Re-watched The Abyss for the first time in decades and I now have a renewed crush on Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio (who virtually carries the movie).
I don't think The Abyss is very good at all, and feel like it's been talked about strangely fondly over the last few years.
One of the PotC films is on, Salazar just looks stupid. Giant head, goofy effects, dumbfuck expression.

Saltburn is the absolute epitome of style over substance. Engaging from scene to scene, well-acted and shot, and has the veneer of something exciting and provocative. Ultimately loses its way massively around an hour in, and becomes a derivative Patricia Highsmith clone. Ending was so signposted, character motivations make very little sense, and the messaging is just utterly bizarre. People want to be rich? Is that it?
Looked Fennell up - private school and Oxford educated. Big Tory cunt.

Violent Night is a more than decent Christmas movie. It's the John Wick production crew so, you can expect that kind of violence, this time at Christmas. And considering that it's this team, I like it much much more than Nobody.
Saltburn was my nightcap.
What a trip. A movie shot with a 4:3 aspect ratio that immediately throws you off kilter. The cinematography is worlds above Promising Young Woman (which I loved). The next 2 hours and change happens and it's pretty stunning. To think up some of the sequences in this film and then actually have your actors do them. Impressive from an acting standpoint. Bold from a creative perspective. Wild that it's r-rated and not something higher.
If you have seen The Talented Mr. Ripley, I don't know if you'll get too much more out of this story wise. So that might be a problem for some.
I need to watch Archie M. In Gran Turismo next. 6-degrees of separation between this Violent Night and Gran Turismo, I guess.

Was it bold? Felt needlessly and ineffectually provocative to me. Traded logistical character development for juvenile shock value.
I thought it was enjoyable up until the bath scene. Then it became a victim of diminishing returns as well as some hare-brained politics and its own editing. Why structure the whole film around some sort of twist when it is 100% apparent what is going on?
I also thought the cinematography was nothing to write home about. It was pretty in a OnePerfectShot kind of way, but it most reminded me of The Revenant; aesthetically pleasing in ages that have zero subtlety and ambition. Lost count of the amount of times he looked in a mirror. Laughed at the two lads entering the maze.
It was dumb trashy fun. Basically Cruel Intentions 2.0.

Every film, book or tv show you have ever liked likelyhas some sort of message.
Maybe Airplane doesn’t.
But Saltburn absolutely tries to.

The film wasn't structured around a twist. The ending which is messy is Emerald showing too much of her work. There's only one moment that really needed to be shown and that was the puncturing the bicycle tire bit. It's the kind of thing where you wonder if that was the original script or something required by the study to make everything tidy.
I'm not going to go point by point with you, but I will talk about the maze. It was introduced when Felix first shows Oliver around the compound. Part of his walk and talk even ends with: "...and the maze" to make it stand out even more at the time. Later on we see Oliver attempt to decipher the possible paths through it, all of which is before the dramatic incident that occurs there. The payoff of the build up to the maze and the effect it has on the family and other involved parties is an example of the tragedy and comedy the film deals with.

Why is any of this comedic? Or tragic? Or interesting?
To be fair to the film, Fennell’s a decent punchline writer - I laughed a few times, again particularly in the first 45 mins-hour or so when it seemed the film was interested in skewering any sense of elitism - and there were good performances from Keoghan, Pike and particularly Elordi.
going to watch anatomy of a fall tonight i think
damn they found a rare moment in this film, where he wasnt doing a full on pug underbite.

Found the NYT review of salt burn more entertaining than Salt burn itself.
“Saltburn” is the sort of embarrassment you’ll put up with for 75 minutes. But not for 127. It’s too desperate, too confused, too pleased with its petty shocks to rile anything you’d recognize as genuine excitement.Utterly empty movie, made for aesthetic Tik Tok edits.

Very accurate review, lol
I gave it 2.5/5. Fleetingly entertaining. Liked the last scene despite it being vacuous. Fun cock. Fun dance.
Edit: whole review worth reading https://www.nytimes.com/2023/11/16/movies/saltburn-review.html
Wooden shamed himself with his ‘themes are for book reports’ post earlier. I feel disappointed in him.
That's not what I said. I said stop wanting messages in everything, nerd.
Anyway watched anatomy of a fall. That was really fucking good like. Still beau on top for 2023,but just under that.
Disclaimer though, you will need to read subtitles n8, so don't bother.

Stop wanting messages? Or stop wondering what the message ultimately was in a film that half-arsed three different ones?
Will watch Anatomy of a Fall one day. Likely on someone else’s recommendation though. Will’s will do.

I watched it twice and excited for the sequel. Inshallah.
The message was to not let embalmed hands possess you with demons.
the film that repeatedly showed someone turning to horrifying ways to deal with grief absolutely did NOT have a message

That was the message i got out of it and it's subjective. Also the directors come from a conservative family.
Anatomy of fall was don't kill your husband. And don't make it look like you did, in case you didn't. Also don't give aspirin to your dog

If the film’s director (or seemingly its fans) didn’t want anyone to point out the politics of her movie, maybe she shouldn’t have, you know… set it at oxford university. and a large country estate. and written the lines about the scholarships. and made the poor middle class boy eat the cum of the rich kid.
you seem to have a real problem differentiating between plot and themes. do you think the last of us is only about zombies and playing guitar
It’s okay brother, you made a bad post. It happens. Not very often to you (I do them thirty times a day and even on xbox live), but it’s happened.
The Holdovers over was great, one of the year's best.
Top performances from the leading trio but Paul Giamatti was at his best.

The thing is, sometimes I just want an entertaining film. Not one that needs a great message. Or care that a director is from a rich family.
The message of the last of us is it's OK being gay with your dad.

That is totally at odds with the context or the actual text of the film, lol
Like, whatever, death of the author, you enjoy the film how you want… but it’s clearly not a film where the intent is purely to enjoy it. It’s not an Airplane, or even a dumb action movie.
It’s one thing for people to write treatises about Bad Boys II really being about American exceptionalism and interventionism and racism or whatever when that’s a lot of subtext and is very clearly a secondary concern in the director’s thoughts.
But Saltburn is clearly MEANT to be some sort of class commentary. It’s all there, nakedly, in the text, in what the director says about it, in its visuals and its costumes and its script.
I’ve posted tons of dumb shit about Barbie or KotFM or The Last Jedi that you may well have picked on for me espousing discussion about its messages. But Saltburn? One of the more obvious ‘this is ABOUT SOMETHING’ films I’ve seen in a long time.
