Always preferred Ozu, Mizoguchi, and Naruse over Kurosawa.
Ozu, Ford, Hou Hsiao-hsien, and Von Sternberg for me.

Is Nightmare Before Christmas any good? It's in my local cinema this evening. Never seen it.

I saw Anatomy of a Fall at the cinema the other day. I liked it very much, even amongst an incredibly strong list of recent palme d'or winners I'd still put it as my favourite. Only complaint is that it went on a touch long

QT’s impact was very real and he’s singular. Nolan? Don’t really see what he changed or how exactly unique he is.

Booked a ticket.
When I saw Dragonball Z in the cinema last year there was just me and two random kids there… who decided to sit beside me in the empty cinema. Psychopaths.

Dark brooding superhero shit was all the rage post BB/TDK.
Would also argue Nolan’s non-Batmans helped people like Villenueve suggest there’s an audience for non-franchise tentpole.

Heh Norrington with Blade, Synger with X Men (maybe not I only remember Wolverine). Arguably in terms of quality M. Night Shyamalan did it better with Unbreakable. Nolan’s Batman were the bigger hits no doubt.
In terms of non franchise tentpole he’s had a lot of success but it’s not like he broke new grounds or anything. Spielberg and Cameron have made careers out of it no? Hell The Matrix came out in 99.
I get what you’re saying though.
By Punished Go To PostStill bemused at Akerman and Dielmann being so high in their lists.🤣
probably had a layup until those old texts came out. had her using that supposedly injured finger all over the place and even had footage of her chasing *him* lol....

Watched The Killer. It was bold of Fincher to see if he could still make an engaging film that was devoid of plot and characters.
Well, despite it having neither...it still typically was very nice to look at and to listen to. That man can direct.
Still, shame they decided to skip having any characters. I guess Tilda Swindon was nearly one? Fassbender was weirdly good all things considered.
But...why? Why did Fincher make this?

Why did Fincher, the critically praised filmmaker known for being obsessive and a perfectionist make a satirical dark comedy about an obsessive and perfectionist hitman?

Good on him but you're probably witnessing an era of auteurism from Fincher and he doesn't care whom it appeals to because he doesn't have anyone to answer to. That's not a negative thing but that's about as close as I can come up with an answer to your "why did he make this?" question.
He made it because he wanted to.
killers of the flower moon. 3.5/5. Good. Not very good or great. sick of dicraprio.
cause he's not that good a director, hasnt been for a long time.

Well the question I'm asking, is more why did he decide to apply his unique style and mastery of the technical aspects of film to a script that had no characters and/or plot. It felt like a complete waste of his talents as a filmmaker, even though they were still very much on display.
I mean, I think I got (some of) the themes of the film. All the product placement was pretty on the nose, yeah the killer lives in the modern world, coldly going about his job while he eats McDonalds and orders shit from Amazon etc. I get that the character was a walking contradiction, his actions and the narration are completely opposed throughtout the film. That's all well and good, but could the same implications have been made with a bit more characterisation? Yeah, probably
I don’t really understand your point about no characters and/or plot. Maybe what you mean is how simple they are?
It’s a very meta film, maybe it doesn’t play as well with those who aren’t fans of Fincher.
Anyway saw Pig last night, and it was oddly engaging and subverted my expectations just about enough. Nicolas Cage continues to be one of the more fascinating Hollywood actors that I’ve followed since childhood. Very interested in what Sarnoski does next, which apparently is A Quiet Place spin off/prequel.

Maybe what you mean is how simple they are?Well the plot is...assassin gets revengue on assassins that attacked his girlfriend. No problem with a simple plot ofc, but the film usually has...something else to hold it up. I guess The Killer has Fincher's style, which is the best part of it.

.
Are there characters? I mean, there are people on screen but are they characters? But we know pretty much nothing about them, never learn anything about them and then they're gone. Every character that isn't the killer pretty much only exist in a single scene. The lawyer's assistant is in a couple of different scenes I guess and the girlfriend shows up right at the very end again too.
I guess it just wasn't for me. Fincher has had a fair few misses I suppose, though i'd consider myself a fan, i really love a lot of his stuff.
just finished watching it. i can certainly see where will is coming from... it does feel paper thin. which in a way makes it more impressive because fincher managed to have me hooked for the entirety of the two hours despite that. good movie.
the fight felt believable despite the difference in size. great sequence.
i would say the one thing that bothered me throughout the entire thing was fassbender's dodgy accent.

By Punished Go To PostGodzilla Minus One is the box office tale of the year.
Incredible how it become my second most anticipated movie of this year, only behind Little Things.
Speaking of incredible things, it's fantastic how Christopher Nolan managed to film the 2 best representations of black holes in cinema.
An actual black hole in Interstellar and a black hole of charisma in John David Washington on Tenet.
This movie is bullshit so far, enjoyable yes but JDW is so fucking bad in this.
It's kind of incredible that on a movie about time reversing, JDW being a cool CIA agent is the most unreal thing about it.
Tenet is soo good tho.
Kinda like kid denzel too if I'm honest. Think by the end of the film would certainly say I felt fond of him.

Glad you enjoyed it but it's on the lower end of Nolan's filmography for me.
My favourite of the movie is when Michael Caine's character (so smartly named Sir Michael) says : "I've warned them he's feeding them rubbish...but they don't seem to care."
Kind of feels like Michael Caine is speaking about the audience and Nolan's movies.

Tenet was absolute bollocks and I say that as someone who has enjoyed most of Nolan's work.
Dreadful film

The plot is legit that of a teenager having read too much scifi and attempting their first go at-it.
