Do the likes of Welles and John Ford not count as Hollywood directors? The majority of Hitchcock's filmography was made in Hollywood as well
By Punished Go To PostGotta include Spielberg in the conversation.Only if he re-releases Munich in 4K UHD
The director equivalent to: "Who is the greatest fictional character?"
Michael Corleone
Tony Soprano

You can defo make an argument for QT and Nolan as some of the greatest âmodernâ filmmakers (although the further we get away from the 90s, that distinction becomes more difficult - easier for Nolan because the cut off is â21st centuryâ). Certainly in terms of box office + critical acclaim, impact on film (Pulp Fiction and TDK are very influential) - but of course theyâre very mainstream, and have their detractors.
Spielberg and Scorsese by nature of having careers 20 years longer and being more prolific than QT have a much better argument. Spielbergâs late career stuff isnât great - I enjoy a lot of his more recent stuff but he hasnât made anything genuinely superb since what, 2005? Where Scorseseâs made five great films in that time.
Spielberg made Jaws though. Objectively one of the greatest films of all time.
All four will be up there in the annals. Iâd say Scorseseâs the only one, as reilo says, who can lay claim to GOAT, like Kubrick, Lean, Ford, Welles, Kurosawa, etc. Tarantino and Nolan will be known as greats as their era. I think Spielberg is perhaps a little too⌠mainstream? Although that doesnât hurt Hitchcockâs reputation.

By Call Sign: Apollo Go To PostQT and Nolan aren't even top 50
Probably are by consensus though. Not to say that matters, or public opinion is right lol, but theyâre still two names likely to pop up on âgreatest director of all time listsâ, even on those not quite as mainstream.
The Sight and Sound list - wonder how many directors are represented.

Kurosawa, Kubrick, Keaton (pls donât spell acronym), Coppola probably my next favourites. Havenât seen many Ozus but Late Spring is TEARIFFIC

The Hollywood director thing is so dumb because a lot of great directors have made a movie in Hollywood.

By WoodenLung Go To PostWe poggingAll I know is that this looks like The Talented Mr. Ripley, but even more twisted and focused in one location.
By Punished Go To PostStill bemused at Akerman and Dielmann being so high in their lists.
Akerman made the current best film of all time m8
