By Freewheelin Go To PostBellingham is amazing for his age. So confident on the ball, every team would love a player like him.He will be making his 22nd (matching his shirt number) England appearance on Saturday and he doesn't turn 20 until June next year. Dude can easily break outfield appearance record for England if he doesn't burn out like Rooney (who had a couple more by the time he was Jude's age).
How was Van Dijk against the USA? Liverpool players having a good tournament are pretty thin on the ground. Mostly either unpicked, unfit, unqualified, unimpressive or uninvolved.
Never really understand fans who take no joy in their club's players doing well at international level.

I was just thinking about something and had a look at the stats. Every time England have opened the scoring, there has been only 6 minutes on average for them to get a second goal.

Saturday at 7pm is a great slot for the France match
Wonder what the absolute ideal time is between games at a tournament, around five days I imagine.
Remember when we beat spurs in the CL final we'd both had like two weeks, and it had a pretty big impact on the match I think.

Was talking about this with my Brazilian mate yesterday. He is just a casual fan who only really watches the big tournaments. And still thinks Pele and Maradona are better.
Messi is just the greatest player of all time. It isn’t Pele or Maradona, and it certainly isn’t Ronaldo.
Messi just does things that nobody else can. His ability to slot the ball between two defenders from near the edge of the box and place is in the bottom corner might be the single biggest gap skill between the next player.
Vision, passing, technique, finishing, dribbling, and off the ball movement. He is top five all time in each category.
I just hope he wins the World Cup so we can stop pretending he isn’t the greatest because he doesn’t have a World Cup.
Last year Messi had a down year, but he is back to being the best in the world and the best player at this tournament.
GOAT
I've said it before but it's a little difficult to just simply compare people from completely different football generations.
How good would Messi be if he were born in 1947? And raised in those times and playing with those rules. And that ball. And those fields and so on. And that life style.
Or how good would Pele or Maradona have been if they were born in 1990? And raised in today's football world in a top football academy. It's impossible to say.
In terms of just who is actually better? As in just comparing their ability, then obviously Messi is. If you transported Stewart Downing to 1955 he would have scored 2-3 goals a game too but that doesn't really mean much. There's a reason Pele stood out as much as he did and nobody else scored and amazed as much as he did.
However, you can safely compare Messi to anyone in the last 25 years and if you genuinely believe there isn't a whole level in between him and the next guy, you don't understand the difficulty of what he does or haven't watched him enough. I can accept people saying r9, cr7, zidane, totti, ibra, minamino, whoever you wanna say being 2nd. But there's no argument for 1st in this generation.

By NiceGuy Go To PostWonder what the absolute ideal time is between games at a tournament, around five days I imagine.I definitely don't think 2-3 weeks wait like in the CL is good. Best is for sure 5 days or around there.

The semis for this world cup and 4 and 5 days before the final so it's just right imo
By Freewheelin Go To PostBellingham is amazing for his age. So confident on the ball, every team would love a player like him. He's had a really good tournament, hopefully not another bundeslolga flop once he moves to epl though
Imagine being one of those millions of Madrid/Ronaldo fans who have deluded themselves into basically missing Messi's greatness as they've had to pitifully try to tear him down at every opportunity in a weird attempt to prop their own favourite up. Same goes in reverse as well.
Wonder if it's a generational/social media thing. Older Liverpool fans can't speak highly enough about the likes of Best and Charlton, but will pick holes in Man Utd's more recent greats.
Still equally amusing and bemusing that so many people don't recognise England fans' bravado as being just that. Probably 1% of us are actually convinced that we'll win the World Cup, and it's made out that it's arrogant to believe that we can win it.

I find there’s an odd correlation between people who think England are shit and full of overrated average players, but also expect us to win the tournament and think it’s embarrassing when we go out earlyish.
Wonder if Lautaro has been so shit that Argentina will choose to change the system if the other option is to have him playing. Alvarez will surely be playing every minute he's available for now.
I've been quite impressed on the odd occasion I've seen him for Inter, but he's massively given the impression of being someone who simply doesn't have the bottle to be trusted under this much pressure.

By Punished Go To PostMonday, lads. Now this I can get behind.
The Messi/Ronaldo comparisons were enhanced by their differences. Its a valid and engaging comparison.
Messi was born to play the game, Ronaldo was designed for it and both matched each other for the majority of their careers. This is definitely Messi's best World Cup yet. I would still hesitate to put him or Ronaldo up with Maradona.

In terms of numbers...perhaps (although Messi has very similar overall goal numbers to Ronaldo is lass fewer games, and assists aren't close really), in terms of actual ability...Ronaldo doesn't even come close. Not even the best Ronaldo. Over their careers the things I can think of that Ronaldo is actually better than Messi at are:
Heading
Jumping
Penalties
Raping
Just imagine how fucking annoying the stat-comparisons will be when we're old and a bunch of little knobends who never even watched them are arguing about which one was better.
