CJ was trending down and the Dame / CJ backcourt was expired
Larry Nance was barely playing
Their draft capital was locked up because of an idiotic trade with the Bulls
And since last offseason:
Dame got his surgery and is playing HoF basketball
They got Jerami Grant for nothing
They have a blue chip prospect in Sharpe
Anfernee Simons has developed into a legit good player on a cap friendly contract
They have the #3 pick
They have the #23 pick
They have their MLE
And with a minor deal with the Bulls to remove protections they can unlock all their future draft capital.
So, now is the time to go all in and get some dudes while you still have a healthy Dame playing great basketball. They got the assets to do something, and if they can't get it done then yea you hit the nuclear option.

That's the thing though, right? Injury history notwithstanding Embiid/Dame PnR is about the most broken thing you can imagine short of the same thing with Jokic.
I'd like to think Anfernee, Nurk, Sharpe and 2 firsts this year (3,23) gets it done but then you've still gotta build a whole-ass team around that. But you'd definitely be able to pick up some ring chasers with that tandem in any case.
With regards to the Ayton thing, I think the move is get Pascal+OG and redirect Ayton and Anfernee to the Raps while the Suns get Nurkic and FVV. That framework makes sense to me if the Raps are serious about building around Scottie. You draft Brandon Miller, retain GTJ and that's a whole young, promising starting lineup you've got there. Blazers would be running a small starting lineup at that point but that lineup starts Thybulle and OG, soooo...
In any case, you trade Dame and you're staring down the barrel of being the Kings or Magic for the next decade. No thanks.
