Giannis with 55 points with almost two minutes to go and it doesn't even feel that remarkable this week...

Being healthy by dealing with his core-surgery and not having to carry the entire offensive load every night with Grant + Simons in the fold prob has something to do with it. Should see an increase in that effort once the team gets a bit more healthy as well.
Yeah, that Blazers-Pistons game was bordering on disrespectful with how bad they shoved them in a locker. There were stretches where they got a stop or forced a turnover on like 6-8 possessions in a row and every single one led to transition points. It got so bad that at the start of garbage time they forced 3 turnovers into transition dunks in a row. Could have easily been a 40-50 point win had they shot like they usually do in the 1st.
Nice change of pace from last year where they had to boat race even the bad teams with their offense and you never knew if they were going to win or not.
They need to get healthy and they're probably still a piece or two away, but from what I can tell this is the best Blazer team since 18-19 easily.
They also need to get Jabari Walker some damn minutes because the bench is too damn small unless he's out there with Drew and it's kinda glaringly obvious.

I'm not taking too much from that Pistons game overall though. The Pistons squad is woefully bad. Would need to see it carried over into March with a healthier roster. Portland is paper-thin at SF/PF in size and athleticism past Jerami (and Hart is a SG).
Eubanks would be an amazing defensive big if he was 3" taller.

Yep. Half their wing core is injured and they're still too small, regardless. It's an improvement over 5 offense first guards though because you swapped a couple of those guys for a Gary Payton and a Josh Hart. They need to get a starting SF that makes more sense, too - but somebody really good probably has to go for that to happen.
Only thing I took from the Pistons game is the same thing I took from the Hornets game, which is that generally speaking if they're somewhat close to healthy bad teams are royally screwed. That wasn't the case the last couple years at all because they played precisely 0 defense.

some of its coincidental. if it was a bunch of corey brewers and ramon sessions going off i'd be squinting, sure
By reilo Go To PostI mean, Giannis had a career night last night and nobody even blinkedbecause its fucking giannis lol
By diehard Go To PostThunder putting up 150 was eyebrow raising thoughAnd not a single player scored over 25 points. That was quite a team-wide whodafuck performance.
That interim tag ain't come off ime's replacement for a reason. And if the Celtics weren't shooting 260% to start the year, their defense falling off a cliff would've been a much bigger talking point too.
Eh, I don't agree with their defense "falling off". It's actually steadily improving as the year progresses, believe it not. Them playing like the best offensive team of all time was definitely a huge fluke though.
I'm fine with the scoring, not trying to see early 2000s basketball where guys are doing krav maga on the court to make up for skill.
By reilo Go To Postthis is not reality lmao

I'm fine with the scoring but I don't really like the over reliance on the 3, it can feel like watching a slot machine at times. Nothing worse than watching a team miss an open 3 generated off good ball movement only for someone on the other team to walk down the court and hit a contested step back. They need to move the line back sooner than later.

lol since you got time, how about the nets somehow no longer having roster issues holding their defense back
That's a very odd stance to take and puts a higher focus on smaller recent sample sizes over larger long-term trendlines... which is not what you want from analytics.

6th in DRtg over their 11 game win streak
Hey, replacing Harden with Ben Simmons and Joe Harris with Royce O'Neale helps
But largely driven by their 124 ORtg (!) over their win streak, which beats out what the Celtics were doing earlier in the season (123.3 ORtg in November)
ain't nobody thinking about ben lol. imagine talking about the nets turnaround without mentioning claxton and yuta
Just get rid of the corner three IMO, if it were just guys like Curry it'd be fine but the 43% league average on corner threes is just stupid (it might even be higher now). A lot of those guys aren't even league average shooters away from the corners.
If we go to a slightly more filtered model, we can look at cleaningtheglass.com which excludes garbage time and heaves:
Nets over last 2 weeks (6 games): 127.9 (!!!) ORtg, 107.1 DRtg
Celtics during their first win streak (Nov 4th - 18th, 9 games): 123.8 ORtg, 111.3 DRtg

Gonna go with a potential hot take and say don’t change anything. The game will adapt on its own. Since people wanna go small ball maybe the post game comes back. KD old af and dominating the league off midrange when everyone thought that was a dead part of the game.
Outside of the refs being shit and not calling stuff properly or consistently, the game is way more entertaining now.
Just call travels and fouls the way it should be. You can’t have someone doing Zangiefs ultra on Zion while looking at Giannis/Trae is a foul.

aite iwtmb lol. the "i don't need to know what im talking about when the numbers are right there tbh" double down out of nowhere is wild but go off
claxton went from being a situational big with no plan to the backline of an actual team defense for the first time in his career and its something to avoid in this kind of convo. this time last year nash was still experimenting with KD at center.
yuta slander is telling on yourself fr
guys out here legit holding interviews about rebounding for the first time in years like a revelation but meh

Fuck outta here. If you wanna shit on Boston and their hot streak go ahead but apply the same energy to Brooklyn who's easily outpacing them offensively right now.
I don't even like Boston I think they're fraudulent I just don't agree that their defense has "fallen off a cliff".
Have it both ways I guess.

Yeah defensive stats are always really iffy, even moreso than offensive ones. Like some impact metrics think Yuta has been a neutral to good defender and others think he's atrocious, you can't really substitute actually watching the games. Especially when so much of defense is team defense and the Nets had awful defensive schemes under Nash... or look at what happened to Gobert's metrics when he went to the Timberwolves.
(I do think the Nets offense is fraudulent though lol).
