thing is why would anyone try for the all stars game, imagine getting injured on a super pointless friendly no one cares about

Klopp, who has previously been critical of the crowded football schedule, responded: "When he finds a date for that he can call me. In American sports these players have four-month breaks.
"Maybe he can explain that. I'm not sure people want to see that - [Manchester] United players, Liverpool players, Everton players all together. North-east too, so Newcastle. It is not the national team. All the London guys together, Arsenal, Tottenham, great. Did he really say it?"

By Xpike Go To Postthing is why would anyone try for the all stars game, imagine getting injured on a super pointless friendly no one cares about
1. Because it is very, very lucrative.
2. I think that actually a lot of people would want to watch it.
3. Players get injured in super pointless friendlies no one cares about all the time.
All star game idea is dumb,
if you think its a good money-spinning idea then you probably believe in 'trickle-down'
if you think its a good money-spinning idea then you probably believe in 'trickle-down'
It can be both a good money spinning idea and also believe that the money will mostly go to the richest clubs.
The thing about the all star game is... that's his solution for some EPL money to trickle down to the lower leagues as they keep trying to gut the EFL deal.
The money gap between leagues just keeps getting larger and larger and more stupid owners keep bankrupting their clubs trying to get a piece of the pie. But genius Todd is like, do it like America I guess where we don't even have relegation!

It’s absolutely not a fix to the money inequality, and shouldn’t be treated as such. In isolation I think it’s pretty fun.
EPL vs Rest of CL all star game would be great fun.
Gimme KDB, Kane and VVD against Mbappe, Lewa and Mane

looool
I see some you of lads have completely forgotten what football is all about nowadays.
Just don’t act all surprised when Todd’s idea comes to fruition.

from what ive read normally nba all star games end up being scorefests because no one cares enough to defend

Why is it a bad idea beyond ‘it’s American’?
The biggest issue I can see is the money raised would go in the wrong pockets. The idea in and of itself isn’t terrible.

Yeah but they’re good fun because everyone is trying mad shit and trick shots, and because the sheer quality on display, the best of the best, means they’re good games.
we have truly lost n8 to big america now

all you cunts better not ever watch international football again is all i’m saying
unless you’re a flag shagger of course
unless you’re a flag shagger of course
just to note im not necessarily opposed to the idea but its just not realistic considering players get 1 month or so to rest nowadays, and doing it during pre season is kind of nonsense as clubs need their best players then too
Yes, it absolutely should not be played given the fixture pile ups. I’ve said for years any teams involved in European football shouldn’t play in the League Cup. Shit needs to change in the opposite direction there.
Americanization to me means 'empty spectacle'
At least with International football you can use it as a gauge of a country's talent management and pipeline.
A North v South allstar prem league match is dumb for so many reasons.

I’d argue Man City playing against most teams is already empty spectacle lol

It would have no sporting purpose, is the big one. Would be fuming if a player important to a team I liked, got injured in one of these. It's absolutely bad enough already with shitty international matches.
bUt fRiEnDliEs. Yeah they do have a purpose, and isn't just random players thrown together. Even international football is at least full of players who have played together for a long time, also in the youth international teams.
I am sure some people would want to watch it. I am sure the average idiot would also like a super league more than Champions League. They can fuck right off.
Edit: and yeah, I do wish international football didnt exist as well. But good luck getting that cancelled. There is however hope for this not happening. I hate seeing Copenhagen players play with glue sniffers in the national team.
You’re a special case because you hate all Danes anyway
edit I posted this before your edit 💀 glue sniffers such a good insult

By n8 dogg Go To Posti don’t think an all star game is a bad idea tbf, fixture pile up excusedYeah, I don't think it's that crazy. The England national team is more or less exclusively PL players so it's not like there aren't a bunch of them playing together already. A lot of the guys from other countries also play together so the vast majority of the people in the team would ultimately have experience playing with their rivals most likely already.

The problem though is definitely where you fit it into the calendar. Presumably it could only work in the pre-season.. maybe a week before the Community Shield or something? Or the same weekend? No reason you can't just have players who are in the CS miss it like they do with the Pro Bowl in NFL. He pointed out that the NBA All-Star game made $200m which could definitely do a lot for grass roots football. An interesting idea.

Comparing it to international football makes no sense either
@Martins, City have a Portuguese player named Carlos Borges who joined from Sporting back in 2014 (when he was 10) -- he has really turned into a helluva player. Was the U18 player of the year for 20/21 and has been on fire for the U23 and the UYL team. He is under contract until 2024.. hopefully City extend him or else he'll be another one of those guys we sell for 10m next summer I suppose.

As N9 said, we already have national teams that can be considered “all-stars” teams.
If you lads want to really Americuntinize the sport just start with ad breaks after every play.
Also goals outside the box should count as 3.
^ not having jordan pickford in an all star team
International football asks you to put aside club tribalism and watch cunts like Steven Gerrard play for your country without the tactical coaching or training that makes club football far better. If you aren’t really patriotic or you care far more about club football - see Wooden - , then it’s just as pointless an endeavour in some aspects.
Some of the best things mooted about the World Cup is the cultural highlights - South African fans, et al. But maybe that’s a form of western/White ‘othering’, oh wow look at these smiley black men with colourful tops how wonderful. Bet the rest of the world don’t give a fuck whether we’re there or not unless they have the opportunity to grind our colonial arses into dust.
mind you i’m as close to tory cunt as can be now. just bought an egg basket and an olive oil dispenser.

Think about it this way. If you guys have a legit all star weekend you could watch Darwin on a skills challenge which would be pretty funny.
Functionally, how would a PL all star game even work? The leagu isn't remotely like the NBA where you always have talent spread around and you can just do East vs West.
A north vs south game as proposed would just have been a combined Liverpool and City XI against a bunch of chumps for the past 5 seasons. And you would probably only get one or two players from anyone outside the top 4 in any selection.

PL v La Liga/Serie A/Bundes/Ligue 1 imho
will still just be a combined pool and city side lol, but you could have a fun team with the rest of the CL
By Xpike Go To Poston current form i wouldnt have a single pool player in thereright?
who would even manage these teams?
Football already has all star-like games in the form of testimonial charity matches. Those are always fun but a sanctioned, mandatory all-star match is a pointless endeavour. If it’s a money thing… lol just give the lower leagues more money. Why means test it.
Also, the PL is basically an overly smug, No Fun Allowed league anyway so much it’ll make the MLB blush, so what’s the point. They would suck all the intended fun out of such an event.
