By Vini.lad Go To PostAnd we've been also saying that. The 5th spot last season didnt feel like improvement to me. We finished 5th having no Europe and getting knocked out of the FA Cup on the 3rd round I think, really early. We had a very good schedule the second half of the season and still failed to get a, let's be real here, pretty easy top 4 considering the competition and the facts I mentioned.
Before the beginning of last season, top 5 would have been a decent result. But the way the season went, it really wasnt.
Finishing 8th: there's no manner to spin and make it a good season, only if you win the Champions League.
He has been very lucky to not get sacked yet, very very lucky. Any other team on the top 6 wouldve sacked him already, without a shadow of a doubt.
Brother, I agree with all of this! The original point was ‘should Arteta be sacked if he doesn’t make top four?’
I posit that if he continues to be the same mediocre coach he is, he should be sacked even if he does make top four. If he improves as a coach to the point Arsenal are unfortunate to finish outside of top 4, then he should stay.
By n8 dogg Go To PostI probably agree lol, but again - separate point to the one I’m making. He is still there, so he should be judged on whether he becomes a better coach. For sure, yeah. Just thinking out loud and not really rebutting what you’re saying.
If it were me I’d have gotten rid of him before last season began. Improving is great and is the key to eventual success but I’m skeptical he is the man to lead them beyond a certain point. He’s decent as a caretaker/interim period manager while Arsenal were rebuilding but now that expectations are getting higher, and serious spending is being put into the squad, as evidenced by where Arsenal supporters want to be by the end of the season, someone else should be leading them to that.
By Plasma Go To PostNah this is it, he's had enough time now he has to deliver.
💀
He's been given £300m+ in transfers with the expectation of some return in the form of European prize/TV money. This is absolutely the season to judge Arteta on tangible returns.
By Perfect Blue Go To PostArteta is a waste of time a club like Arsenal should have a manager worthy of their stature. Not some ex-player who got his job because Pep let him put the training cones out. Madness and an unreal lack of ambition.
Lampard wasn’t even as bad as Arteta and we sacked him with the quickness
You wouldve sacked him at least 3 times already, and it wouldve been the right decision every time. You won the CL 5 months after sacking Lampard which I also agree, wasn't as bad as Arteta.
I wanted just 10% of your ruthlessness. Arsenal are just too scared.
arteta has been plenty back but he's also had some crazy luck like his both his strikers completely breaking down

Maybe if Chelsea had 10% more restraint, they would have been the most dominate club in Europe the last decade.
Nah, but if the management didnt start buying players the managers didnt want every time, after a succesful period maybe. Or just not even attempt at getting any of the priorities despite the managers in charge full well knowing the team needs change.
But both CL wins came after firing the manager mid season. Fire more managers, it works. Especially fire Tuchel. Please.

By Shanks D Zoro Go To PostIf you don’t want to see any improvements last season then that is on you.
And I think you are forgetting the situation he was in the first two seasons.
Joins the club mid season and then is disrupted by Covid but still manages to secure a trophy. And I know you say fuck the FA Cup, but still that season is more successful than anything Tottenham has done since the early 90s.
Then the second season, fans are banned and still in a pandemic.
Third season we finally return to normal and we get to see improvements in term of the club identifying targets, improving the style of play, and imposing our will more, and fighting for fourth until the end of the season.
I am looking forward to this season to see what he and the club do.
Covid affected every single club in the world, not only us.
Tottenham have managed a CL final and has been playing UCL football consistently, that's way bigger than an FA Cup title imo.
I'm also looking forward to this season. I'd be fine with keeping him if he get us back to the champions league.
Like Inky said, there was enough money and time given. We need results.

I am gonna say that covid would affect a rookie head coach a lot more than experienced ones. No way was it an ideal start to his career.
Arteta actually got something in our trophy cabinet, not just saying he got somewhere and then lost.
I definitely give him credit for that cup. It's more than most managers accomplish. Which is why we need to stop making excuses for him or for Arsenal when it comes to ruthless decisions, like they aren't one of the richest clubs in the world.
We kept doing the same thing for Ole "oh he got to semifinals!", "oh he got to a final" and he showed every single time he was never going to win anything , and we all saw how that went.
And no, I'm not ignoring the fact that the main issue at both clubs is ownership.

We kept doing the same thing for Ole "oh he got to semifinals!", "oh he got to a final" and he showed exactly he was not never going to win anything every single time, and we all saw how that went.
But Arteta has had one of the most awkward starts to a career imaginable because of the pandemic. Just saying “he has had resources” isn’t a sound argument. Last season was his first normal season and the club saw improvements.
And what you are missing is that you are projecting what you think the club’s owners goals are. They have their timeline, and they felt that Arteta is the right person to reach their goals, hence why they gave him a contract extension before the season ended.
Also internally the season objective last time was probably just getting EL, which he did.
We didn't even have a full 23 senior squad, most of our bench late last season was youth players.

Every club has hardships whether it's injuries, players unavailable or internal turmoil... and they gave him the extension when it looked like he was getting CL; though I am not doubting they are behind him, hence the 300m. We'll see how it works out.
Less than 3 weeks until the start of the PL season now, I can't tell you how weird it feels to not only be excited by the return of the league but actually being excited to watch Newcastle (hopefully) never be involved in a relegation battle

Not without serious attacking reinforcement m8. Time running out a little bit on that front but hey, like I said, I just want to enjoy a season without worrying about going down. A serious cup run would be nice instead of watching us crash out early and me thinking "this is good, we need to focus on the league anyway"

Silly racists ruining it for everyone, gotta have respect for Rashford for everything he's done off the pitch.
It's a shame though, because his penalty was truly fucking shocking and a tad unforgiveable.
It literally is that binary, top four or out. Football is a results business first and foremost, fuck all that fluffy shit.
If it wasnt for the prior season id have last season was a complete failure. Sure it's nice to be proud and enjoy how you play, but I'll take the success over the journey in football anyday.

Why do Arsenal fans expect to top four?
They are not top four in terms of their first 11 or squad, and not top four in spending.
You can hope, but 5th or 6th is where you should be.
At least United fans are expecting a return on the investment.

i mean are we saying Arsenal arent a big club? because if so then i yeah i guess they shouldnt have an expectation of top 4 but i believe them to be in a group of 6 clubs that should expect top 4 at minimum

and this is the problem innit. Six into four does not go. Does that mean two managers have failed every single year?

failure doesnt mean you should be fired but the seat should definitely be hot. if you miss it 2 years in a row you have to go.
