I have no clue how good Martinez is since I didn't see any Ajax games.. but his size is going to be a problem at CB. It can't entirely be overcome. For me, Zinchenko is a better fit for them if they were signing Martinez as a LB primarily. He's a quality player and with this Partey situation, he could just slot in as a CM in case that's required.
No clue what City's valuation would be.. £30-40m? He cost under £2m so any fee is a huge profit, but the issue is again the cost to replace him which we'll see with Ake. I don't fully understand our transfer strategy this summer.

I had some sliced apple and strawberries. And an iced latte. It was nice.

Pretty sure some of the best CBs ever were less than 6ft.
At a time were long balls/crosses were probably more frequent.

martinez is 5'6", though.

People didn't have ACLs back then and everyone smoked 40 Players and drank Special Brew before matches.

By inky Go To Post5'4" actuallyIt's like the opposite of the Alexis wages, it gets smaller every time it's mentioned.
By Killer7 Go To PostPretty sure some of the best CBs ever were less than 6ft.Players are much stronger in today's game than they were in the past. You can't ever really compare physical attributes outside of eras.. the guys in the past can't live up. Martinez might be fine, we'll just have to wait and see. But that limitation is going to be an issue for his entire time there at Utd.

It's like Laporte with City.. dude is fucking slow. Sometimes he can turn it on and make up for being burned, but he'll get punished on occasion and the reason is usually very clear. It's fortunate for Martinez that a lot of strikers are shorter these days than maybe they were in the past, but going up against a guy like Haaland? Good luck.
Martinez has played well in the CL including recently against the giants that are Haaland and Nunez so....?
By Laboured Go To PostMartinez has played well in the CL including recently against the giants that are Haaland and Nunez so….?I appreciate the optimism. I would be leaning that way too if he were joining my team. I am sure my skepticism isn't without bias as well, but I had the same concerns before Utd were even in the picture tbf.
Coming up against Nuñez and Haaland is one thing, coming up against Ricardo Fuller and Zat Knight is another. Proper Barclays men.

By Daz Go To PostHe's played Haaland before -Lol, there is like one moment in the entire video where he "beats" him and it's when Haaland tries an elaborate flick in behind and nearly gets by him and another defender with his pace. Dortmund must have been terrible in this game. Haaland has his back to goal and is way outside of the final third almost the entire video. Destroys is so outrageously misleading that I'm annoyed I fell for the clickbait.
Handled him just fine.
i just realized that haaland on the floor is photoshopped
you have to respect the youtube hustle. its the worst shit ever.

Martinez will slot in nicely *if* ETH can manage to drill this United side into playing more akin to the possession style football of Ajax. Other than that his physique and eredivisie experience are valid concerns for moving to the PL.
Hope for the United lads that my apprehension will be proven wrong in the end. At this current time I genuinely do not want him at Arsenal.

Suprised destroyed isn't written in all caps and smacked across the thumbnail in red. Do they even know how to get hits.
Size matters, but the fact that both Arteta & ETH want this fella would give me some confidence that he is suitable for the physicality of the PL.
Still don't see how he displaces Maguire/Varane though (for non-footballing reasons).

By Andrew Go To PostSize matters, but the fact that both Arteta & ETH want this fella would give me some confidence that he is suitable for the physicality of the PL.It could be that he doesn't instantly. As n8 said earlier it's probably a signing made in view of Varane's injury issues, and phasing out of one of Maguire or Varane long term.

My only real issue is that a new CB atr this sort fo price probably isn't very high on our list of needs (imo, and clearly ETH sees it differently).

As a utility, he could be a really good buy.

Maguire was scandalous last season & Varane very injury prone, so on paper, yes. I just think the captaincy and/or England status elevates the former beyond ability and the later is very expensive and high profile. There's the unconvincing Lindelof too. And Phil Jones who isn't going anywhere. I don't know that you can shift Bailly either.
Maybe midfield (or left back?) like Daz said but I thought ETH said he didn't see him in those positions.
By bud Go To Postlegend has it that maguire can play cdm, too.Phil Jones as a CDM also crops up more often than you would think.
I'm sure Martinez will be a good player but I was never keen on the idea of him coming and playing CB for us and signing him as a LB when it sounds like he's barely played there seems pretty dumb when you're paying 50m for him.
We've just had so many short CBs over the years and it's never really worked out for us, we've finally got two tall good CBs and last season we barely conceded from corners which has been a weakness for us for god knows how long. I just don't want us to go back to having midgets back there.
