Extremely non-Moneyball but I'd love Liverpool to sign one of these old geezers* for a season. A Gary Mac signing.
You could make a PL winning team just with those free agents, incredible. Some PL club should get on it and guarantee themselves a trophy.

Doesn't even have Lingard and Januzaj on it.

We’ll have we’ll and truly run him into the ground by then.
I know I’ve been very critical of him since January, but I’m genuinely glad he’s staying. I just hope he justifies breaking our wage structure.

At least he's getting a midseason rest this year. Murphy's Law says he'll be injured or something lol.

By Xpike Go To Postis every Portuguese club that hard up for money theyre selling all their best players for cheap
Only thing I have been able to make out over the years is that they are all a bunch of criminals.
It’s all just money laundering.

2025
Kept the wrong guy.
The weird thing is those Portuguese clubs usually have packed stadiums of like 50k too I think? I'm surprised they're always so skint. I know the agents kill them but with third party ownership fully outlawed at this point, you'd think they would get the majority of these transfer funds. I assume in this case he must have had a really low release clause since that 20m fee was mooted regularly.

It's the trade off Catholic countries make to ensure their place in heaven.

Did you know Madrid alone sells more cars per year than the entirety of Portugal? And it’s not even close.

Suprised Immobile has never been linked with a move to bigger clubs.
Because he is shit.
Literally can only do it in Italy, and even then, only when it is Serie A.
By Killer7 Go To PostHe absolutely fucked it at Dortmund, Sevilla, and the national team iirc

Salah is going to smash this season I think. Bit of a lottery when looking ahead to when he'll decline, but I'll take it. Ramifications for the wage structure remain to be seen, though we've spent so long getting just this two year extension sorted that I assume we've covered all our bases.
By Xpike Go To Postis every Portuguese club that hard up for money theyre selling all their best players for cheapPretty much. Palhinha was pretty much expected to go this summer. He is turning 27 next week, it's the perfect time for him to make the jump. Ugarte was starting to overcome Palhinha, it felt that we were starting Palhinha over Ugarte on the last games just so his value wouldn't drop.
I'm not upset with selling him, I'm upset with the value. 30 would be the bare minimum I would be ok.

Porto had to sell Fabio Vieira and Vieirinha until yesterday so they wouldn't end the year with financial loses. They've been under UEFA's eye for a few seasons and even in January they were risking a ban from European competitions because of some debts that had to be paid, hence the sale of Luis Diaz.
Their wage budget has been insane, back in 2016 they announced that they wanted to lower their wage budget from 75M€ to 55M€ until 2019.
It's 2022 and their wage budget is 92.3M€.
Mbemba, who was selected for the team of the season in Portuguese League, today announced his goodbye as he won't renew and he is leaving on a free. Rumours are that he asked for a wage similar to Otávio, who is paid 4M€ a year (pretty much double of Sporting's wage limit), and it wasn't accepted.
Mbemba (4.66M€) is just another one from a long list of players who have left on a free joining Diego Reyes (7M€), Ivan Marcano (2.65M), Brahimi (6.5M€), Héctor Herrera (11M€), Hernani (2.9M€), Adrian Lopez (11M€), Vicent Aboubakar (12.3M€) and Moussa Marega (4M€).
That's 62M€ spent on players that have left for free in the past 4 years, that's a lot for a club in our league.
To avoid players leaving for free, they have to pay them a ton like they did with Otávio. I'll bet Porto are hoping that Otávio will have a great World Cup (his call up was a bit strange) so they can sell them next summer.
The league is broken because the top clubs try to keep up with the big boys in Europe while having a fraction of their money so they make risky deals and pay unrealistic wages for our reality.

I assume in this case he must have had a really low release clause since that 20m fee was mooted regularly.Benfica has the best average in the league with 53k, Sporting is at 43.5K, Porto at 42.5K. But you have to see that our wages are low so ticket prices can't be that high.
For Sporting, a season ticket (pre-season presentation, 17 home league matches, 3 home Champions League matches, up to 2 League Cup matches) can go from 190€ to 450€ but you have to be a member of the club which means paying 12€ a month.
There's also the fact that the big 3 in Portugal aren't just football clubs. We have teams and athletes from everything since basketball, futsal, roller hockey, volleyball to things like boxe, judo, athletics, surf and chess.
But the main problem is lack of revenue. Small market so TV contracts and sponsors aren't that great. The top 3 basically live from Champions League money and doing well enough to earn more money on the competition and raise the value of the players.
At least we have good academies and Portugal is a good source of young talent.
