I just summoned someone called 1st phase let me solo who died within ten seconds
Subbed to Xbox Live last night purely so I could get some help with this cunt. Two failed attempts. Loaded it up this morning and first time round, two people - one with a greatshield, and one who did some mad thorns thing constantly which rinsed him - did it for me while I stood back and did nothing but throw Messmer's spear lol. No regrets.
Overall, mostly positive feelings with a huge couple of regrets on the DLC. First and foremost, the combat is what I come to this game for; love the feel of it and the intuitive nature of gameplay. The new weapons, the vistas, and a couple of bosses - Messmer, Putrescent Knight, Midra, Bayle - were all amongst the best the game offered. The last boss was awful; far too punishing, far too unforgiving. I know there's people really good at this game that can do it with a dancemat while eating crisps, but I'm an average gamer. Lots of people have bought this game and will never finish that fight lol.
Lore and narrative wise, it's a mixed bag. The Messmer and Marika stuff is excellent, but much of the last boss is a real damp squib. It absolutely smacks of half-finished ideas, come up with late in development. The cut scene before, during and after the fight are just three slightly different versions of the exact same speech. The last one in particular... that's it? That's my big reward? I don't even get to go up to the fuckin gate myself?
As usual, Fromsoft's esoteric approach to quest design and lore often raises more confusing questions than answers, and not good ones that leave me tantalised, just stupid ones that I can't make sense of. I miss the taut narrative of Bloodborne and Sekiro; I know that isn't what this game is aiming for, but the open world narrative approach fails when everything that happens in the DLC has absolutely zero impact on the main game. Gideon is super interested when I find Miquella's Haligtree and cocoon, but I have nothing to say to him when I literally meet Miquella? The disconnect ruins the immersion of the open world massively, for me.
Some of the new locations are very good in terms of aesthetics - the Jagged Peak and Cerulean Coast in particular - but the standouts for actual exploration were Enir Ilim and Shadow Keep. Far too many places were nice skyboxes with nothing to do; the Abyssal Woods gets away with it a bit because the atmosphere leading up to the fight was impressive, but a few places - the Finger Ruins are the most egregious example - is just a hell of a lot of empty space with nothing to do.
7/10 DLC in a 9/10 game, with a 10/10 weapon for my NG+ (thank you, Spear of the Impaler).

Increased Holy damage when the weapon has its luster restored.
Decreased the number of attacks required to restore the weapon’s luster.
Increased the duration of the luster restoration effect.
Someone posted a Euporia video of them wiping out consort lol … need to go farm larval tears. I’ve got 80 dex so I’m gonna try out the new added poise damage to claws if night and backhand blades before farming some larval tears and going back into a faith build. They made rain of fire viable too so a true mesmmer build could be fun
Edit … with my current set up I’m running blood pata with ensure, Milady with blood wing stance, back hand blades with bleed and that dodge AoW and woth a couple swaps in relics im running claws of night.
