I'm really enjoying the DLC so far. I think the design of the world is straight up better than the base game. Smaller but still more than big enough to really explore.
The boss design however is a huge downgrade. The bosses feel designed with summons in mind, which makes me feel...weird. Bosses are quite simple in the sense that aggro is the main thing you need to avoid to heal etc, a summon doesn't make a fight trivial, but it does mean free heals more or less when you need them. Ofc solo is still viable and that's what I'm trying to stick to, but it does feel like these fights haven't been designed for it. Souls games have never relied on absolute perfect play to be able to beat a boss (with melee), nor should they be.
The main bosses being basically all Malenia on steroids (huge health, huge combos, massive damage) is just fucking lazy design. They look amazing and have flash movesets which is great, but the actual gameplay design of them is just poor. I disagree. There's an entire new upgrade system that gives Spirit Ashes a flat bluff, they're putting Spirit Ashes in the players minds more than the base game.
I'm soloing them too, being able to do it doesn't mean they were signed to be done that way. Regardless, it's going to be a matter of opinon until someone comes out and talks about it, the fact though, their idea of difficulty is to just amp everything up. It's lazy.

i do feel like they are balenced for summons unless you play strength.

Can already hear “the purist” telling people they aren’t really playing Elden Ring if you cash in Scadutree Fragments and Revered Sacred Ashes. Add it to the list of things From puts in their games that actually should not be there.

So...2 (The minibosses have largely been fine). If some gfights have clearly been designed with Torrent in mind( and they clearly have), then it isn't a stretch to imagine they also designed some bosses with summons/spirit ashes in mind. OR they said...yeah this is a bit crazy, but if players want to make it easy they can use summons but that is worse because they should know that enemy/boss AI in these games makes these fights really janky)
What about the rest then? Because I straight up think they're lazy at best, and poor at worst. Not letting the player breathe (without a spirit ash/summon), is not good design.

Well you haven't really said much. I think the design is lazy. All you've said is "well I was fine". I've also been fine, I've beat them without summons too...I still think they're poorly designed. Having ways to mitigate poor design is still poor design.
The big bosses pretty much all have huge health, do huge damage, have huge combos, have huge AOE effects, are hyper aggressive. If you're happy with that design that's absolutely fine, it's absolutely personal taste an opinion to an extent.
I think there's way more interesting (and better) ways to increase difficulty without just "MORE"
i don't think they're too hard so far. i did the lion @lvl 120 with just 1 level up thingy just fine but i do think they balance around summons which is fine with me.

For some weird reason the one i had the most trouble with was the first dungeon knight...guy, but hey...I thought that was a good fight. Well designed. I just think they've went the wrong route in how to increase challenge for the main bosses.
I only recently went back to Sekiro and played through that. Now there's a well designed game with well designed boss fights that complement the mechanics. I can see these DLC fights being a complete fucking nightmare for lots of different builds. I dunno how the fuck you beat them with a really slow weapon or even some magic stuff because of the wind up time.

The mobs are also fine. It's really just the big bosses that I think they've hugely dropped the ball on. The bosses were always the thing I looked forward to in Souls/Sekiro/ER, it's all well and good them looking flashy but I'd prefer them to be...fun.

I went back to ER only a few weeks ago and dropped the shield, always played with one but after playing Sekiro I didn't want to and I've found it much more fun. So again...having to use things that aren't my style of player to mitigate the challenge indicates poor design.
I don't want to be fannying on with trying different builds and weapons on a per boss basis, the game should support different playstyles. I don't have the knowledge of the game to do that (or the smithing stones which would be required). And I don't think the game wants you to do that either. I do wish they'd let you just respect at any time in the DLC though....

my biggest gripe with elden ring is that i want to try different weapons but i have no stones for them or have to respec to try them.

I've respected like 3 times in the DLC to try out some of the new weapons, but yeah...the respec system really doesn't let you experiment and it perhaps should.
So I'm sticking with my trusty two handed Bloodhound Fang. I have seen some people saying Milady is a decent replacement for it...I'll try that later. I really like the BF, I've used it all through the main game but it would be nice to use something different, I just don't want to eat all my resources to see if something is even viable or suitable for how I play.
I've seen my friend play with Milday, if I'm not mistaken it's very similar to Isshin's moveset ?

Well, there's a finite number of Larval tears...
TBH i'll probably just stick with the bloodhound fang, I've got complementary talismans now (some of the DLC ones are v nice). Nearly every weapon ive tried (including new ones) just haven't been as good in terms of output...
Btw I'm not sure how but I was getting healed on the last fight. But it was just in phase 2 I think. Has to do with the holy damage if I had to guess

Fr glad I had my endgame saves with all the stones unlocked at the shop. Messed around with a few builds before I settled back on my cast and bonk build
Y’all making me feel like a scrub haha. Tbe lion fight was frustrating for me. AoE was bad enough but the visually spectacular boss move set also made the camera janky as fuck when roll dodging. With the dark knight as a counter example, the moves are at least clear and learnable. I agree with a lot of what’s being said on both sides tbh. I feel like these bosses, more than previous ones, have an AI and move set that punishes healing. Also think some of the move sets leave way too small of a window. My build can do damage, but everything is slow lol.
That said, I hadn’t thought I would need a shield since I didn’t use one in the base game, but I’m going to use one after reading Yurts posts hahah. I like that they encourage build differentiation but at the same time, give me more larval tears.

Nothing beating the unstoppable jump attack. Hippo down in 3 attempts but I can see why it has been frustrating, hilarious hit box shenanigans.
More notably, From definitely fucked up when designing the Shadow Keep lol. I entered from the back and then died the first time fighting the hippo. Upon respawn, both boss door s within the Keep are now sealed, forcing me to leave the location all together in order to open the front gates and finally fight the boss again. I thought my game was bugged until I looked it up

Btw they frontloaded some of the power onto the first 10 upgrades (9% buff?) so the second 10 upgrades aren't as crucial. Which is great for replayability because I can't imagine collecting them all again with my other characters

I found it … I must have accidentally sold it or something … super pissed but whatever. Sorted my inventory by order found.
Tried out the crystal lined sword, which also has a great special and I dig the reach. Not very good against dragons though.
I may also play around with tbe holy giant club mace thing you get army. Had holy damage and can have an ash applied for triple damage. Also has a good block counter damage thing. May also fuck around with that great sword from the black gaol knight. The thing has Ike an 80 something damage mitigation when blocking
Hearing / seeing crazy shit with the perfumer DLC items but seems boring as fuck.
The DLC larval tears are not too bad to find. At night they light up like a 20’ diameter area.
Plenty to play around with but msn I wanted to try the melady 😬
