Swedish speedskater Nils van der Poel dominated the 10,000-meter race Saturday and immediately let his opponents know about it. Shortly after van der Poel set a world record during his gold medal performance, he released a training guide for anyone who wants to get on his level.π
The guide β titled "How to skate a 10K and also half a 10K" β is available for download. It contains 62 pages of strategies, practice schedules and tips for skaters who wish to be as dominant as van der Poel.
AlcoholLad
I drank beers like any other 25 y.o. during the Aerobic season, but as the intensity of the
sessions increased my alcohol consumption decreased. Again, Itβs about skating laps of 30,
not about refraining from alcohol. But as I was out drinking I didnβt get enough sleep, and to
me sleep became more important than alcohol during the winter. However, every once in a
while a celebration was needed in order to free the mind a bit. The biggest challenge of my
training program was to be able to keep wanting to do it. Motivation was key. If something
kept me motivated I considered it to be good. Sometimes all I needed was a beer, or eight
beers

This isn't the IOC's fault in any way (aside from a more general consideration of whether Russian athletes should've been allowed to compete at all). In fact, the IOC would rather she not skate, and they've made that abundantly clear.
IOC might actually be worse than the NCAA lol
The IOC's hands are tied, because the positive result from Valieva came from Russian Nationals, giving the jurisdiction in this situation to the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA). When RUSADA received the result, they initially suspended her, but they reversed that decision the following day after an appeal by Valieva. The rumored excuse (that she ingested it by accident by sharing a water glass with her grandfather (despite the fact that it's a pill that dissolves deep in the gastrointestinal system and would essentially require her grandfather to vomit in her mouth for transmission to take place)) was dismissed as untenable by RUSADA's own head of results management, but the committee in charge of the decision ruled in favor of Valieva anyways. (Note, though, that this doesn't mean they've accepted Valieva's excuse as exoneration; they're still planning a "full investigation" (yeah, sure), but they didn't want her suspended for the Olympics in case she's eventually proven not-guilty).
That decision - of reversing their own suspension of Valieva - was challenged by the IOC, WADA, and the International Skating Union. They brought an appeal to the Court for Arbitration of Sport, who - to the shock and dismay of basically everyone outside Russia - sided with RUSADA, permitting Valieva to continue to compete in the Olympics.
The IOC wasn't pleased. They've stated that if Valieva finishes in the top 3 of the women's singles event (she's in first after the short program and has been heavily favored for years to win the entire thing), they will not be holding a medal ceremony. They've also added another qualification spot for the free skate, and it's rumored they won't be inviting her to the skating gala, even if she wins the women's event. Moreover, they still aren't awarding any medals in the team event, where she skated both the short program and free skate in the women's singles discipline. They're basically refusing to acknowledge her beyond allowing her to skate, and they're only doing that because they have no choice in the matter.
There will be broader consequences, too:
- This will probably result in the IOC, WADA, and ISU rewriting their own rules and policies, granting far less autonomy and jurisdiction to national agencies, committees, etc, giving the final say to the international organizations in cases like this.
- This will almost certainly guarantee that the age limit for all senior-level figure skaters will increase, because her case has been treated differently as a result of her age (15), which, by WADA's terminology and guidelines, makes her a "protected person" (had she been two months older, there would've been far less leniency, and she almost certainly wouldn't've been able to continue competing). The current age minimum is 15 and has been for many years, but now it's expected to raise to 17 (preventing any future issues like this, as well as addressing other issues with the longevity of "women's" figure skaters).
- This will ignite further calls for a blanket ban on Russian athletes in the Olympics. WADA proposed this several years ago in the lead up to the 2016 games, but the IOC ignored them. The former head of WADA, who's also a member of the IOC, has already been proposing that again.

Russians are fucked lol, they really fucking are. with just a cold, dog eat dog scorched earth mentality that is just ingrained into the majority of the Russian people imo. Is this a sweeping generalization? Probably a little bit, but fucking hell. I used to play a lot of online games man, a lot of different games, for 1000's of hours, that's a lot of Data tbh, back in cs 1.6 days for example, original team fortress and all recent games, hackers were ALWAYS mostly Russians, like 95% of the time. Every fucked up dashcam video I've seen on sites like steakandcheese/ liveleak etc, fight videos, the majority are coming out of Russia. I mean just the way their government operates. the social engineering, troll farms, spy assassins, doping teenagers to win more medals in the Olympics lol ..Just total fucking mentalists. I think since communism was abolished, this idea that if there is a way to one up someone for personal gain and you're not using it is crazy to Russian people. It's cultural, like they can't shake it, they're proud of being little shits, lol.
