The charity thing is likely more of a PR thing - it's vague enough as to who the proceeds will be going to. Might be trying to ensure one less sniper is on his back after using "war" as part of the statement.

Fair play to Abramovich, I doubt anybody expected this. Abramovich is to write off £1.5 billion in loans that Chelsea FC owe him, and will donate net proceeds of the sale of the club to a charitable foundation to help victims of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
