Epic F*ckin’ space battles, man
All in the title. What’s one of your favorite epic space battles and why. Also includes invasions. Spaceships and lasers dudes just involved in some way. Could be for any reason. Special effects. Nostalgia. Drama.
For my starter, I’ll discuss Independence Day final air battle which shows how loose I was with “space battle” lol:
- it’s got an epic opening battle speech that likens aliens to the Brit’s lol
- a covert spy like mission to space to upload AI
- a sure loss turns to a sure win
- at the time the special effects were unreal
- huge scale dogfight with smaller space ships vs F18’s
- epic self sacrifice

Yes.
I really do love how BSG was just so damn thicc. Civilian ships may as well evaporate the moment they get strafed, but stuff built to fight stands out and always shows why. I also think one of the pilot episodes for BSG (can't remember the title of it right now) was one of the best ever. Basically they're on the ropes, bad, fleeing from this fleet and its somehow tracking them after every jump. About an hour or so and Cylons would basically drop in right on top of them. Stragglers would get cut off and left for dead, the crew got more and more fatigued and it showed with how they started to slip in their tasks, perfect tension. Fr.
Also, this is Crest of The Stars. I always thought it was a standout because they added an additional layer to all the warp/subspace stuff in other universes. Basically, ships don't just go fast or push the warp speed button then pop out when they feel like it - they bring their own pocket space with them. Along with that, they shaped a way to fight with all of those things in consideration. Just because your bubble is moving a certain way, it doesn't mean that your ship will be vectored the same way within it. You may think you've got a ship on the ropes and catch a full broadside for your troubles. And it turned typical ship v ship stuff into 'jousts' between bubbles so to speak. A great, underappreciated spin imo
I keep hyping Gundam Thunderbolt because it actually did some really cool shit (before falling in love with the laser spam and typical stuff)
This is actually dope. Short version is that these 'repurposed' wounded soldiers set up fixed positions in a chaotic debris field to really, really good effect and super mr gundam man gets to flush them out. What was dope about this to me was how everything was initially advantage ended up flipping. Not so much the environment itself no longer acting as a barrier, but the fact that these guys struggled to orient themselves properly. Then of course it turns into protagonist powers activating but its one of the few moments Gundam gets out of its own way.
I'll probably post more stuff as it comes to mind. Dope thread idea +1

By Kibner Go To PostI'm actually waiting for Dy to post something from Legend of the Galactic Heroes.lol. LoGH is hard to just point to a clip or two. Its all immaculate.
This is probably one of the better, shorter battles (if not a bit hammier because it was all about emphasizing the swag the Alliance was on at the time) to highlight what it did well though. One thing they always harped on in LOGH was picking where you want to fight before anything else.
I think this was a good ways into the series. I'm due for a rewatch, but the guys regal black think they've got an easy win and believe they're about to encircle a fleet that's looking for an honorable death. Tables turn quickly. And what's great about it is that they technically don't even do anything wrong. There's an enemy fleet that either refuses to let itself be flanked or is content to die dramatically. The officer does the right thing and starts an encirclement.
They played themselves.
Reinhard da Gawd sees the reports and immediately recognizes the trap and understands his junior officer is about to get put in a mixtape something serious. Doesn't even wait to see how things unfold before sending reinforcements. Then they of course show up thinking they'll be entering a pitched battle with easy glory to be won - but instead find Yang's fleet CHILL, comfortably able to engage a second fleet, and ready to smoke them too.

Man, I love me some space battles.
I think
is the one I remember most from DS9. Sure the Dominian war arc had a few but damn this one was awesome.
And because DY took my favourite pick, I'll go with my second favourite from BSG
The Adama speech, the frantic firing of the defense guns, ramming the goddamn ship in there... So Good.
Also, DY you're thinking of the episode called 33 minutes.

Mass Effect has some damn good ones
Find that a lot of the time I lose track of what's what in space battles, but the ones in Mass Effect are really well directed. Love all the ship designs as well.

wrath of khan was spectacular and jj abrams doesn't get enough grief for trying to ride its coattails

and yeah 33 minutes was sooooooo fucking goooooood. every 33 minutes you're taking an L. actual tension, real stakes, spotlight on the ship, crew, and a dynamic situation. fucking perfect episode man

The episode was called 33, as in every 33 minutes. Shit was incredible TV.
BSG was quality when it came to that stuff. Cylon Mothership jumps in, both ships open up with nukes, kinetic cannons laying down defence against them as small craft skirmished and tried to stop cylon ships getting through the defence lines.
Just good shit all around

Roci vs the Zmeya was better than 99% of the stuff shown, and for the Expanse it was just Tuesday.

It still amazes me after the quality that was BSG, we got Caprica
Also
Knights of Sidonia had some pretty hype moments.

Yeah everything about this was just too good.

I’ve been waiting for expanse since this started from a discussion about that series. Some of my favorite battles. Might be my favorite actually. Especially since it’s not effected by nostalgia

smh i'm about to run expanse back. this is how they started ffs. this shit was easy for them i can't stand it
why were they so consistent ughhhhhh

It's the GOAT, the fact they have realistic physics puts it over the top to me. It seems like those ships could be real 100-200 yrs from now, right down to crews wearing suits in case the hulls get punctured.

Ditto. It’s wild to think “realism” when discussing space battles lol. First time I saw a body die and. It fall to the ground whew

By s y Go To Post[snipThunderbolt was fucking gorgeous shame about the rest of the package 😂

By Hytch Go To PostWatching the new Expanseso gud
Azure Dragon capture scene was sick.
By Lunatic Go To PostThunderbolt was fucking gorgeous shame about the rest of the package 😂the soundtrack tho

By DY_nasty Go To Postso gudTrue but gundam soundtracks always slap. I meant the characters and story was meh. I know it's just some random sidestory about an uninteresting character but it seems a waste for a movie.
the soundtrack tho
