In a medical first, doctors transplanted a pig heart into a patient in a last-ditch effort to save his life and a Maryland hospital said Monday that he's doing well three days after the highly experimental surgery.
While it's too soon to know if the operation really will work, it marks a step in the decades-long quest to one day use animal organs for life-saving transplants. Doctors at the University of Maryland Medical Center say the transplant showed that a heart from a genetically modified animal can function in the human body without immediate rejection.
The patient, David Bennett, 57, knew there was no guarantee the experiment would work but he was dying, ineligible for a human heart transplant and had no other option, his son told The Associated Press.
"It was either die or do this transplant. I want to live. I know it's a shot in the dark, but it's my last choice," Bennett said a day before the surgery, according to a statement provided by the University of Maryland School of Medicine.
I know this is a medical first but does the research suggest a pig heart to be viable as a long term solution?
edit:
wow, sounds promising. A pig cornea transplant has also been performed which gave someone back their eyesight :O
edit:
Pigs have long been a tantalizing source of potential transplants because their organs are so similar to humans. A hog heart at the time of slaughter, for example, is about the size of an adult human heart.
Other organs from pigs being researched for transplantation into humans include kidneys, liver and lungs.
Prior efforts at pig-to-human transplants have failed because of genetic differences that caused organ rejection or viruses that posed an infection risk.
Scientists have tackled that problem by editing away potentially harmful genes.
In the heart implanted in Bennett, three genes previously linked with organ rejection were "knocked out" of the donor pig, and six human genes linked with immune acceptance were inserted into the pig genome.
Researchers also deleted a pig gene to prevent excessive growth of the pig heart tissue.

Pig organs in general are great temporary organs for humans and if you genetically engineer an animal to prevent rejection we can just grown our organs in animals. This raises some ethical questions as pigs are very intelligent animals but for now it's the best we can do.

By Daz Go To PostHow did they find out?Literally in the article m8
His actions came to light when 1.6-inch (4cm) initials were discovered by another doctor on an organ that had been transplanted by Bramhall and failed about a week after the operation.
By Perfect Blue Go To PostI know a barman who used to do this (but I definitely don't think it's a regular thing). Same guy told me recently that they used to have like a punk/variety act regularly perform and a fish was part of the act (I assume he bit the head off) and the fish was kept in the same ice bucket that served the drinks. Bar staff just had to dig around the fish.
