I feel like if there are no kids in the house keeping the ammo and the gun together wouldn't matter?
By Not Go To PostI feel like if there are no kids in the house keeping the ammo and the gun together wouldn't matter? You never have guests over?
e: also, drunk friends are just as dangerous (if not moreso) than kids

By Daz Go To PostGuns r bad.No, they are just a weapon. And weapons can be fun to use in the appropriate environments when handled responsibly.
Well I don't actually own guns. Don't even like holding them, same as Domino
If I did it'd be for recreation, not defense, and I'd fucking disassemble it until I needed it. Honestly on the pros and cons list a home invasion sounds better than the accidental death of a child (or inebriated acquaintance)
My home isn't my castle, I'm getting the fuck outta there. Enjoy my inanimate objects bro

By Perfect Blue Go To PostAmericans really live in fear like this? Are you being serious or just playing aroundYeah most ppl have them for the “security”
It’s why I really don’t play with ppl on the road too much or squabble with people out in public. Never know who is holding legally or illegally
I am a gun-enjoyer, even if I don't have any currently. I have other things that I like more and I don't enjoy them enough to own one with all the responsibility and maintenance they require. Instead, I would rather just go out to a firing range for an afternoon and rent their gear.
By s y Go To PostAre you asking if people who live in the country with by far the most gun violence on the planet think about protecting themselves against said gun violence?Yes, I am. If someone runs up on you with a gun you’re likely already fucked before you even have time to get your finger on the trigger. Real life isn’t a movie and just putting more guns out there where everyone has an itchy trigger finger doesn’t seem like the answer. Are you going to point your gun at everyone you see on the off chance they’re gonna get you first?

Okay goofy
By s y Go To PostSo in this scenario, I'm better off without a gun?Statisticslly? Yes, by far. You’re more likely to shoot yourself or someone else in your vicinity than activating bullet time to stop gun violence

By Kibner Go To PostDefinitely get the training and try them out at the range before buying anything.
And if you do buy a firearm, be sure to have separate locked storage units (preferably safes) for the firearm and ammo. Never store them in the same storage unit. I will be extremely mad at you if you don't take firearm safety deadly serious.
My first serious GF took firearm safety extremely seriously. She actually took me to a range for a brief safety class prior to shooting at the range. It was a lot of fun, but at the time (this was a decade ago) I knew I wasn't ready to own one. Stuff like trigger discipline and other guidelines remain pretty instilled in me from my experience with her.
I actually hadn't heard of separate safe's for firearms and ammo. She had safe but I never watched her as she locked the weapon away. It's possible she had two.

Among them was David Castro, the 17-year-old who died in Houston in July. David played percussion in his high school marching band, wanted to study engineering in college and hoped to get his driver’s license by the end of the summer.
On the highway, the Buick started flashing its lights and honking, Mr. Castro said. “I tried to get away and he stayed right behind me,” Mr. Castro said. As he took a turnaround lane under a highway, he heard two shots. The rear window shattered. David, seated in the passenger seat, was struck in the back of the head.😑
“I just started screaming. And he kept chasing us,” Mr. Castro said. “This was not a road rage incident — this was a grown man who took the life of a child because his feelings got hurt.”
The police eventually made an arrest in the case, charging Gerald Wayne Williams, 35, with murder. Mr. Williams has since been released on bond.
By Perfect Blue Go To PostStatisticslly? Yes, by far. You’re more likely to shoot yourself or someone else in your vicinity than activating bullet time to stop gun violenceConsidering there's no consensus on the definition of defensive gun use. I'd second guess those statistics.
you can continue to kumbaya against gun violence, but I've got no issue with someone wanting to get caught with it than without it 🤷♂️
By reilo Go To Posthttps://www.nytimes.com/2022/04/12/us/road-rage-shootings-guns-texas.htmlThat’s insane.
I remember reading some studies that people who carry guns on them at all times are way more on edge and that seems true on some levels at least.

I'm kinda split with kib on household stuff... But I've also been in a lot of different environments too.
I will say if you're not comfortable with firearms, don't really try to force that type of thing. At the same time it's always better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.
Don't like the "if someone rolls up on you" stuff in general either... Some people are legitimately painfully unaware of their surroundings and happy about it on regular basis.

My whole thing with FA safety is that anyone who buys a gun for home protection isn’t using two safes / storage cases to separate guns and ammo. May as well not buy something. I keep my shotgun inaccessible but I’m also not owning the thing for the purpose of home safety. Trigger locks prolly make the most sense for tbat application?
By Perfect Blue Go To PostStatisticslly? Yes, by far. You’re more likely to shoot yourself or someone else in your vicinity than activating bullet time to stop gun violenceIt's really, really easy to maintain this type of stance when you've never had to wait for police to show up. If you ever wonder what time slowing down feels like, then be in a home invasion waiting for help. And if you're on the wrong side of town then police deliberately won't show up until things are well past over with.
Not even trying to be a jerk or anything. And most ppl who own weapons are 'on edge' because they should be. Weapons are dangerous 😂

If you want to ensure FA safety and that the only person getting access is you - then yeah that's a blueprint.
There's just small things many need to consider and work backwards from imo. The shotgun thing in particular. Yes it's a solution, but fact is that not everyone is gonna handle one well at all. Most people are barely able to mentally handle a pistol or rifle. A shotgun? The first time you use a weapon can't be when you need it. Imo its a hard hill to climb for a lot of reasons.
Not gonna lie I kind of hate talk about firearms and I'm not even an enthusiast, the people arguing against ignore these things for their own agenda:
- people who live more than 10 min away from the ranger/closest PD department
- people who live around mountain lions, bears and wolves
- areas where cops have decided they won't intervene period, the community is left to fend for itself
- most people in our country on your property without your permission aren't just taking a stroll and why should someone presume they're the non-violent type of thief?
- we don't rehabilitate criminals and we barely deal with stalkers, do you want to tell someone dealing with an unstable ex or stalker they're not entitled to an equalizer when they show up at their residence?

Home defense vs hobby is a very different discussion but shooting is way fun. I've never once went with someone with a "I don't really like guns" attitude and they didn't come back with a huge grin on their face.
Every time I've been flagged on a range - its been by a handgun lol
I hated training people on them. Still, the amount of people who do the exact same ewewewewitsmovingomg motions holding a shotgun as kids do holding a snake before dropping it in front of their class freaks me out. And if that mental barrier is there then I wouldn't even bother either. You see a gun fly out of someone's hands once it's enough...

My dad used to hunt and I handled his shotguns as a lad. Big double barrelled fuckers. Used to clean them for him as well.
Was a lot of fun firing them

By Pedja Go To PostDon't lie, I've read dy's posts about DC.lol dc is 'gun-free' but don't tell them dudes in SE
big reason why i stay in virginia over dc even though my commute is longer. and i don't even carry anymore - but criminals in DC are as goofy/brazen as they are specifically because they know people out here unarmed as fuck lol
they'll be out casually breaking into homes and vehicles, following people around without a care in the world. at least in other places criminals have to actually perform some kind of risk assessment before hopping into the fukkery.
