The stuff about how comforting it is to feel like nothing ultimately matters definitely had me looking inwards.

For all the praise for Yeoh’s martial arts skills, she is incredible in the final 15/20 when she’s mostly just… quiet. For all the film’s flash and bluster, it was ultimately a sentimental family drama, and that works massively in its favour.
Wish i loved it as much as most people seems to. The action was just big sleep at times. But everything else was truly great

I'm sure a lot of work went into absolutely shit films too.
But as I've said, i liked it quite a bit. The fighting at times just got real boring. So it's not quite up there with best films I've seen in years opinions.
4/5 for me. Still very good. Just not amazing.

Sonic 1 and 2
Great movies, so simple and yet fun, to the point with not fluff, always moving with some great dialogue.

I thought the fighting was really good fun, all choreographed well, and I especially loved the ‘fighting’ at the end when it was just Evelyn spanking and hugging and fixing nerve problems. But I’d probably agree that it was the weakest part of the film, because everything else was so remarkable.
I honestly feel like I could go see it again right now. The best new film I’ve seen since the pandemic started. Looking through my Letterboxd, 2019 had loads I loved: Irishman, Gems, Lighthouse, OUATIH, Parasite, Ad Astra, Little Women, Portrait… I liked this as much as any of them. I think Lover’s Rock is the only film I’ve seen since then that comes close (but I have missed a LOT)

He was very good, but not the best of the year. Male performances I thought were as good or better than Gyllenhaal in 2014:
Teller and Simmons in Whiplash
Stevens in The Guest
Fiennes in Grand Budapest
Keaton in Birdman
Dano in Love and Mercy
Phoenix in Inherent Vice
Oyelowo in Selma
Double billed Top Gun and Maverick over the last few days.
The first is pretty good whenever it’s in a plane, and very bad whenever it isn’t; Cruise hasn’t yet worked out how to approximate a human being, the same three songs played constantly becomes grating, and the amount of sweaty knowing homoeroticism jars against the jingoistic propaganda of the film. Kilmer isn’t built up enough as a presence for there to be any real antagonistic force, and the soul of the film disappears when Goose does. 2/5
The second does the very sensible thing of getting all of the callbacks and nostalgia out of the way in the first ten minutes, allowing for a talented cast and some stupendous aerial action to take centre stage instead. Cruise is as vulnerable here as he has been since Edge of Tomorrow, and the film is more consistent in its knowingness, painting Maverick as the Peter Pan who never grew up. The action is excellent, Glen Powell is a great douchebag, and if you’re a huge fan of the first you’ll probably cry at the end. 4/5

Playing in 4,735 locations, the widest theatrical release in domestic box office history, “Top Gun: Maverick” is projected to earn $150 million over the holiday weekend. On a three-day scale, Paramount is predicting a $123 million haul.
If projections for “Maverick” continue to expand, the film could become the best Memorial Day opening of all time, potentially unseating the $153 million debut of Disney’s “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End” in 2007.Salute
Top Gun was ridiculous but basically tops for summer popcorn flicks. Last 30 minutes had my inner 12 year old so stoked.

I didn’t like the first one at all. Second is very good.
Just watched PotC:Dead Man's Chest
I'd be fucking livid if I'd paid to watch that. It meanders along for 150 minutes, then it just ends. Of the film franchises I've seen where two+ of them have been made back-to-back, this is easily the most lacking in a satisfying conclusion on it's own merits.

Had no idea that Ridley Scott was in the middle of shooting a Napoleon movie starring Joaquin Phoenix.
