By reilo Go To PostThere's a few good scenes in what you described correctly as pretentious and long.So basically it's as good as 2001 A space Odyssey
Also, the one-take wasn't very good. Should've had Cuaron jump in and direct that scene.

The Northman
Words cannot express how proud I was of my student for responding to Willem Defoe by ripping a fart.
Often brilliant, with the atmosphere being incredibly helpful in that regard. It’s odd how this $70m movie looks fifty times better than any Marvel movie despite being a third of the cost. Sets, costumes, locations - the film largely has the same lived-in #tactility and #verisimilitude of Eggers’ previous films. Photography wonderful too; a couple of really visceral action scenes and the final confrontation is stunning to look at.
On a script level, however, it didn’t feel like an Eggers film, which I guess he’s hinted at in recent interviews. The film is far more interesting when it leans into the spiritual or supernatural, which is often when people aren’t talking. When they are, it’s hackneyed, cliched, bog standard revenge stuff. Everyone in the film basically sounds like Inigo Montoya all the time. There’s real profundity in the visuals but not at dialogue level, and the dialogue goes a long way in making this a far more conventional film than I was expecting. There’s a very clear pull in two different directions going on, I think; the esoteric stuff feels more like Eggers’ wheelhouse, and the film doesn’t feel as comfortable when it’s trading in simple revenge tale terms, because it ultimately then ends up not having much to say beyond ‘cycles of violence are bad’.
Largely good performances: Hawke and Defoe aren’t in it enough, and I would have loved an extra twenty minutes or so at the start to flesh out Hawke’s kingdom, his relationship with his wife and brother; Skarsgard is excellent at the physical stuff but a tad wooden when it comes to the dialogue; Kidman is good fun; Taylor-Joy is a little ‘Gaga in Gucci’ but has a barnstorming last scene.
Well worth a watch and a really enjoyable movie, but ultimately a tad disappointing given the heights of his previous two.

He truly had the smell of a king
The Witch is my favorite, and I will have to watch The Northman again to really decide, but I think I like it as much if not a little more than the lighthouse.

The Northman was good
Like seriously good
But its too gory and some depictions were hard to stomach. I guess that's historically accurate, because of how brutal those days were, but man, some stuff I didn't need to see

Don't really get why X got such high praise from some places. I think, as the kids say(?), it was very 'mid'. Struggling to think of anything I really thought stood out as good but in fairness I can't really say it was shit either. I did laugh at Pearl going fucking flying when she tried to shoot Maxine, at least.
Idk. Didn't particularly care for any of the cast, the brutality felt a bit eh and it all felt a wee bit predictable.
Think I'll watch the new Scream tomorrow. Reckon I'll enjoy that more.

I just don't rate Mia Goth as an actress. X was disappointing, but making Mia Goth as your central character was a mistake IMO. Brittany Snow was electric though, as always!

For once n8 is to be trusted. Such a silly but entertaining film
Absolutely needed that imo. But it is funny some like IGN called this film tame and neutered. What film did they watch

https://www.fxguide.com/fxfeatured/the-neural-rendering-of-the-champion/
The Champion directed by Maciej Barczewski, is the first full theatrical feature film to be converted to English using neural rendering. All of the performances were changed so the actors not only are revoiced into English, but their faces were replaced so the actors are also visibly speaking English as well.
Loved The Northman...absolutely loved it. As I went in there was a couple on our row that I thought at the time didn't look like the type for an Eggers film. Got a feeling the boyfriend saw a trailer and thought "Ah mint, Kill Bill with Vikings"
Needless to say they walked out with about 30 mins ago.
Eggers is 3/3 for me. It felt like his first two films with a bigger budget, I disagree with N8 on the diagolue. I think if you took the script and had someone else direct it then sure, it would feel like pretty standard revengue stuff. Egger's style just gives it so much more....body. And I really think there was some great stuff in there particularly the last scene with Amleth and Kidman.
Action was...brutal and heavy. The performances were good. Would have loved to have seen more Defoe, Hawke and Bjork; They were all very entertaining but I don't think the movie needed it really. Pace was spot on, visuals were fantastic (can't wait to watch it on an OLED).
That man can make movies. Think he's probably at the top of the list now for me in terms of current directors, can't wait to see what he does next.

Felt almost like a parody at times and I couldn't say if it was intentional or not.

Can't say I enjoyed Scream a whole lot more, but then again I was never a fan of the franchise.

Wish we had seen more of that stuff. Loved the bits with the ravens when Amleth was tied up, and the Valkyrie

There was rumours it was going to be at Cannes, but no dice. But yeah, that is the one I'm most looking forward to now.
