By DY_nasty Go To PostGiant robot movies are supposed to be cheesy and entertaining
You lack culture
They can be those things and also well-written though.
By n8 dogg Go To Postwhy are movies about monsters allowed to be shit
This is the same as the ‘turn your brain off’ crowd. It is an admittance the film is bad and not supposed to be good. I will die on this hill.
Good is subjective. If I'm watching a movie about 400 foot tall interdimensional monsters tearing up a city I don't need it to be Citizen Kane, just be entertaining. Pacific Rim was entertaining.
A giant robot movie only needs to be written well enough to justify getting into the giant robot
Anything more than that, and you're asking why there's a need for giant robots
Good cheese doesn't need a sandwich, etc

Imagine sitting in a theater, the 400 foot tall robot with lasers in it's chest appears on the screen for the first time and hearing someone let out a big sigh and go "It doesn't make sense, why is Itomi the crusher of dreams appearing now"
We dumping popcorn on them immediately.

you seem to be conflating good characters with wikipedia articles
Apparently the reason why Prey isn't getting released in theaters is because if it were, Disney were forced to let it go to HBO Max in the US after the theatrical run as it would be still part of the deal between Fox and WB.
n8 wants kaiju to have a moment of clarity and a tear in its eye as it asks the Jaeger for forgiveness with its dying breath.

Pacific Rim has:
Bad leads
Bad performances
A bad script
Nonsensical plot and development
Weak payoff for some characters
And it's still tons of fun and it was a great big screen experience. A great director brought a lot of deftness and personality to weak material and elevated it into a standout blockbuster. It has some amazing sequences (Hong Kong fight, Mako's flashback) and you can see the love that was put into its craft by someone with a good eye for attention to detail that positively celebrates the material it's referencing.
It's not an upper tier film, but it's very acceptable popcorn entertainment. And no, it doesn't mean turn your brain off, it means look at this anime/kaiju trappings put into a new setting and have childlike fun with it. It's true that Marvel has destroyed movie commentary on the internet, but that shit goes both ways. People make fun of idiots going "Captain America is a 70s political thriller" and yet they barely do any better and expect applause for going "👉 Marvel bad hurr durr" for 30 straight movies no one forced them to watch like it's some big brain insight. There aren't only two categories of film, Marvel and "Good". There is no more water in that well lads.
This movie stands on its own.

By Old King Rob Go To PostImagine sharing the same opinion as frustratedAs if it wasn't obvious that there's is no accounting for taste, Frustrated also thinks Rogue One is the best Star Wars movie this side of JJ. Yikes.
n8 it's not too late. We can pretend the last two pages don't exist
They are all mostly shit even before JJ, but Rogue One is like barely a step above Rise. The worst part is that it's not even shit-fun like PR.
I will admit that Rogue One is the only one that I fell asleep during, and never bothered finishing it
Also the difference between Pacific Rim and MCU movies is that no one is pretending PR was a masterpiece in film and a genre defining film.
As it’s been pointed out, MCU stans will tell you The Winter Soldier is a top tier spy movie. Pacific Rim fans will just tell you “I liked seeing giant robots fight giant monsters”
Nobody in the universe will sit there and tell you they liked Charlie Hunnam’s character or that the story was good.

My favorite part of Pacific Rim is the big robot using an oil tanker like a baseball bat and hitting a ground rule double with the big monster's face
If that didn't actually happen in the movie, it did in my head and it was great

Well actually, the best Star Wars in the last 10+ years or so is the Clone Wars animated series. It's incredible.

Warner Bros. Discovery will not release “Batgirl,” either theatrically or on HBO MAX, TheWrap has learned.
The film, made under a previous regime, was initially designed to be an HBO Max release, and then was being considered for theatrical distribution. Due to COVID issues and shutdowns, the budget ballooned to $90 million.
👀
We're still living in this world where people think people care about Batman side characters
I'd rather see more villain origin stories than a fucking Robin/Batgirl/Huntress movie

You could probably do a lot of stuff with Nightwing, batwoman, huntress, etc...
But all of Batgirl's most standout or memorable moments are kinda shitty.

Who even asked for that
The issue seems to be that is that the plan seems to be to stop doing original movies for HBO Max and severally cut their productions.
They already announced that they are stopping with the content for kids/young adults and the rumor is that they are announcing that they will drop most of all their scripted projects and focusing on unscripted shows to better adjust to Discover+.
So they had the best streaming for like a year now they've decided to go the Netflix way of no good new shows
