Still think the worst penalty was Belotti’s, dude walked up to the spot all defeated and shit. He absolutely knew he was going to miss it.
By bud Go To Postit's puzzling because saka was completely out of the game. and he's just a kid.
and taking penalties in training is a bit different than taking it in a euros final with 90k fans.
But Grealish and Saka probably have the same amount of penalty experience in games. I don’t believe Grealish is Villa’s pen taker. What do you draw on then, if not a) performance in training and b) willingness?
If both of them said they wanted to take a pen, and Saka has proven demonstrably better, than what is the issue here?

it's called game management, n8.
he came on as a sub and had a very, very poor performance; he looked completely out of it.
based on that, southgate should've made the decision to net let him take the fifth and final penalty.

thought i'd be less annoyed at southgate after sleeping on it. but nah he's a daft cunt.
i'm reminded of turkey's hype when people call him a good man manager. people say it so much that it just gets accepted as truth.

Stones had to take a penalty, Luke Shaw had to take a penalty, Sterling had to take a penalty. These are players who have been on the biggest stages, who are used to the pressure.
At the end of day he relied on players that basically missed the tournament, and on a kid that apparently has people mistaking him for the next GOAT contender or something. Really, you put Saka as fifth? Not sterling, not stones, not shaw?
If Lewis scored more goals in training, Kane would’ve still started every game. There’s a reason for that.

Kuipers is easily one of the best refs in Europe and was generally spot on with his decisions and in complete control of the game. I'm very happy with his "play on" style of reffing. He is consistent and fair and does not let the fouls escalate.
He must have taken note in preparation on how players like Kane and Sterling go down easily when shielding the ball and I applaud his response. Makes for a much more exciting game of football when play isn't interrupted for simulation.

But Saka might have scored every single penalty he took in training while Grealish and Stones and Sterling might have missed every fourth one. And without that knowledge, it is ludicrous to think that we could make more informed and rational decisions about who should and shouldn’t be taking penalties than someone who knows this squad.

We’ll agree to disagree. I think he lets too much go, and certainly comparatively to his peers which therefore means inconsistencies across the refereeing at the tournament.

So if that 19 year old is far and away in the top 5 penalty takers in the squad, he should still be excluded because of his age?
Southgate and Saka know more about his mentality, desire, ability to handle pressure and penalty taking nous than any of us armchair pundits can and will ever know. There are a lot of things to criticise about Southgate’s game management last night. Saka as fifth choice is not one of them.

Kuijpers was quite generous with his lack of cards, and another ref could easily have given reds for the neck grab and the stamp. He did a pretty consistent job overall though, looking back.
Ref was great, and the game never got out of his control. Only weird moment was when Maguire faked contact and got a foul for it, and Chiellini could’ve been sent off, but I can see why he wasn’t.
It’s great to see players like Sterling actually having to play football instead of trying to turn the game into basketball, where nobody can touch you.

Also missed the most obvious yellow on Rice early on. The stamp did look like a red, was quite surprised it wasn't given, but the shirt grab? I wouldn't have expected that.
Some mistakes for sure, and also a few times he fell for dives. But overall a very good performance anyway, not long var pauses and didn't fall for most of Kanes and Sterling's constant simulation, like the other Dutch ref in the match against denmark. Especially nice to see Kane not just get a free kick at every duel. It's OK just to be stronger than your opponent.

If he's a better penalty taker than the others than Southgate was right to put them forward in the way he did.
Main issue for me was the 120mins prior where we just didn't play anywhere close to the levels shown previously. Southgate needed to be more proactive and push for the win. Too often we played it long to Kane who couldn't hold it up for shit against their CBs.
Mancini played it brilliantly from the 2nd half with his subs to control the game. We just didn't react.

Generally a bad idea yes unless the kid has a world beater mentality like young Ronaldo or Messi, like Mbappé, which clearly Saka doesn’t have. Even then it’s not ideal, because being responsible for the fifth penalty kick in a euro final can really destroy a young man’s confidence.
Jorginho missed his penalty, but it was still the right call to have him take the fifth.

Saka pretty much carried Arsenal on his back last season, that proves to me he has better mentality than some of the squad do
Afternoon, lads. Has Kane left yet?

Fuck penalties
And fuck uefa for removing away goals from their competitions from next season. More extra times and penalties, just what we all want
It is scary that we are only gonna get better before Qatar.
Spina should be back.
Zaniolo will hopefully stay healthy and could be our best player.
The role players will all have the believe, and some will get moves to bigger clubs to further develop.
Chiesa could be absolutely naughty in 16 months.
As good as we were this tournament, we still need to work a lot on our off the ball movement. Once we get that figured out…

If Southgate or anyone else think you can translate best pen takers from training, directly to a shootout in the most important match for his country on forever, then that's fucking amazing.
He shouldn't be excluded purely for his age. But also his inexperience. Never taken a pen at pro level, but start with the deciding pen at final? Sounds fucking crazy to me.
But sure. Southgate and Saka knows best about pressure. That showed well yesterday. Everyone else are just armchair pundits and looking back with hindsight. Same with the two subs that barely played all tournament coming on to take one lol
But whatever, I was hoping for Italy anyway. If this had happened to Copenhagen or Denmark I would be fuming at the manager though

By FootbalIFan Go To PostIt's penalties lads. It's not that deep.
It absolutely is. Pens are very different than having it decided in normal play, but there's a lot of factors that go into it. It's not completely random.
By Punished* Go To Post Invalid Social Media URL😂😂😂Yeah. I highly doubt Chiellini intended to grab Saka's collar and yank him by the neck as opposed to just a shirt tug, but there's definitely a case to be made for dangerous play when someone is getting dragged back by the neck.
The Chiellini card?
By n8 dogg Go To PostWhat do you mean clearly doesn’t have :lol? What is that based on?
Based on observation of course. He’s technically gifted, reads the game well, is very fast, looks like he will develop into a great player barring any injuries.
But the ones with world beating mentalities make it all about them, willingly or unwillingly. There’s an arrogance to the way they play the game, how they thrive under pressure.
Saka isn’t used to pressure, he plays for Arsenal, fuck does he know about pressure? He’s a talented kid in an England squad full of talented kids, the eyes weren’t on him. Expectations weren’t on him. People kept talking about Sancho and Grealish, mostly about Grealish really, the media was all over him.
G Nev talking about data.
Roy talking about how all that goes out the world come the moment.
Roy spot on. Penalties are more about believe than technique at this point.
Was ridiculous what Southgate did.
Saka was clearly overwhelmed by the occasion.
And as any Italian fan could tell you, you don’t bring on someone to take a penalty with only a few minutes game time.

People will shit on Ciro, but he didn’t get any service during the knockout games. That is why Zaniolo will be so important. The heir to Totti would have been able to get him into the games more.

Well when Italy did have it on the wings and so on yesterday, he was also more often than not fucking around outside the box. Didn't make it easy to give him any service, and made some hilariously bad runs on the counters

True, but Italy didn’t get it to the wing that often. And at times it was basically him vs three English defenders.
I don’t think Ciro is the player we need to guarantee dominance, but there are not many other options at the moment.

Of course Dortmund won't turn down that much. But no way Chelsea go that high either.
We'd only go that high if we managed to offload some players for decent fees in the process. That + the CL win money could probably cover it.
As the saying goes, there are a lot of world beaters at the gym, but then they do the walk, see the lights, hear the crowd, and they remember.
I was glad Berardi decided to grow a pair after not taking one against Spain. IMO he is out best penalty taker, so to see him rightfully step up and take the first one put on a smile on my fave. Although it would have been saved had Pickford gone the right way.
Also glad that Bernardeschi scored penalties in both shootouts. Never really rated him and think he is a poor player, but glad he was able to step up for the occasion.

Former Italy international Alessandro Altobelli said it’s ‘joyful’ winning at Wembley against England. ‘They always think they are the greatest, but in their trophy cabinet there’s one rusty cup from 1966’.
The 65-year-old, a previous centre-forward capped 61 times by the Azzurri, was happy after the win on penalties over England on Sunday night.
“It’s joyful winning at Wembley against England,” Altobelli told RAI Sport. “Who always think they are the best, the greatest, the most talented, the most beautiful.
“And yet if you look in their trophy cabinet there’s one rusty cup from 1966! Go look at our trophy cabinet, it’s packed!”
Legend.

Chielini's card was such a cynical foul I understand you'd want to send him off for that but ultimately it wasn't DOGSO nor excessively wreckless so it's a yellow.
The stamp was also not a red.
