When you are England with an appalling history with pens - you should do your utmost to avoid them.
The manager had the arsenal to put Italy away in regulation 90mins.

Thought Rice and Kane were also good yesterday, particularly in the first half. Henderson was disappointing; thought he was on to bring control and experience but was sloppy with the ball.
By FootbalIFan Go To PostWho was the English player that walked/jogged to Saka after he missed
Phillips. King.
Thought Rice was good until he came off
Would have liked to see Henderson replace Philips as the tide was turning, rather than taking Rice's role after we'd already well and truly lost control of the match. Felt like Rice might have been able to last a while longer as well if we'd done that, rather than exhausting himself trying to keep a grip of the midfield on his own.

By Hitch Go To PostYeah I kinda feared a result and performance that would see us booed off the pitch, avoided that at least. At some point, Southgate is definitely just going to Deschamps it and stroll to a victory because he simply has too much talent to fuck it up. He's clearly good enough to do that, even if his game management is dire. England go into that match last night with Sancho and Trent, and a more experienced Bellingham, and it's probably a real one sided victory.
Reckon our youth development has been sorted to the extent that we'll win a tournament at some point, would have been special to win it at Wembley though.

Henderson was disappointing; thought he was on to bring control and experience but was sloppy with the ball.He also made the two best chances for England with his passing. By that point, England didn't need control, they need to attack, and at least he offered that. Given that him, Saka and Grealish all seemed to struggle to impose themselves, I think we can once again pin the blame on Southgate for making the wrong subs at the wrong times

Wasn't impressed with Kane at all.
His hold up play is good, but he Lacks dynamism. Look how Chiesa was pulling the England defences apart and compare to kane's Laboured attempts. He looked so leggy, his acceleration was almost comical.
DCL not had a kick fresh as a daisy against a tired defence.
So many options.

The English way, I guess.Does anyone dispute that England have more talented players in their squad? That Italy were able to triumph because of a superior manager? Are you really saying that adding 3 more world class players to England's starting line-up wouldn't lead to too great a gulf in quality between the two teams? It was, after all, a 1-1 draw.
Pickford; Walker, Stones, Maguire; TAA, Rice, Bellingham, Shaw; Sancho, Kane, Sterling

By Laboured Go To PostJust seen there's a whole sub-culture of United "fans" that think Shaw not winning is proof that Mou was right. The internet is a very dark and unpleasant place. The LUHG crowd. They're the fucking worst.
They'll point to the trophies Mourinho won at United and crow about how he's clearly superior than Solksjaer. Will say nothing about his final season meltdown of course.
I sound like a broken record
But it is true
Teams that play well, and know how to play, score a goal, defend the lead when they can't defend, then end up unable to get their foot on the pedal again
It's one of the most common faults of current managers
Feel like if england chased a 2nd goal it would have worked out much better
Instead they let Italy keep the ball and get back into the game and sat back from 40th minute onwards. And you aren't going to withstand that pressure for 50 minutes unless you're really really lucky™️©️

And you are basically saying: "If England had the same manager but added 3 more offensive minded players while Italy stayed the same then we would destroy them and not have only 1 shot on goal after 120 minutes and barely being able to get out of our half or manage more than 2 passes in a row."
What if Italy had a Spinazzola that wasn't injured or Calabria that wasn't forgotten? What if Italy had a more in form Immobile? What if Italy had a more experienced Barella? What if Italy wasn't forced to play a semi injured Chiesa? What if Italy played a cone instead of Insigne?
I just find it fascinating that England made a mess out of it and played like a relegation threatened side yesterday, but there is no credit to a Italy team that wasn't exactly the ideal one either and still managed to play your pants off.
Feel like England scored too early to be honest. Throws the gameplan out of the window to score within 2 minutes lol
But for all Italy’s possession, they didn’t create many clear cut chances, and their goal was a scrappy set piece. Fine margins.

Last night was watching Spurs under Mourinho, but after we started falling away from the top of the table.
I'm not here to slate Southgate, but I think he managed that specific game really poorly. There was adrenaline and heart carrying those players in the first half, but not tactical sense. When that faded, we were laid bare.
I think a lot of those England lads should come away feeling proud about how they performed throughout the tournament, reputations largely bolstered, it's just sad they couldn't do it on the big night.

By rossonero Go To PostMore talented? Maybe. A better squad? No.Every team will to some extent suffer from form and injuries. I don't think either team came into the game really suffering, at least they were pretty even in that regard. But if we're talking about young players, if we're talking about the same teams lining up in Qatar, there is a huge difference. Every big nation will have good players coming through, but England and France are just on a completely different level. In a couple of years time England could easily have the best players in the world in like 5 different positions. Italy will most likely not have that.

So yeah, I really don't think it should be controversial to say that an England team with a couple more world class players sprinkled in would simply be too much for a team they drew against. England scored early last night and set up into a low block, and it worked pretty well for about an hour, but Southgate failed to adjust, then failed to bring on his stacks of attacking talent. But if players like Mount and Phillips are starting on the bench, he probably gets away with it
This is the best English team I've ever seen. I think the sides from maybe 2002-2008 had better players, especially in midfield, but they either played stupid football or self destructed. This current side is mostly well drilled in defence, make few errors and take their chances.
They're the tangible things we see on field. This is a guess, but I think they also buy into a team spirit for England which the previous generation of players didn't. So Southgate and the players deserve a lot of credit for that.
I still think he made a mistake not trusting Sancho and Rashford to make an impact in extra time though. Verratti was excellent in controlling the game for most of the second half, but when he was subbed off England could've used that as a chance to press the Italian midfield and seek chances on the counter. But Southgate never looked towards his bench.

Meh no point talking about missing players and what not
Reminds me of 09, I remember some Manchester United fans were missing Fletcher in the final and said he would have made the difference to win the game 💀
But barca playing without Dani Alves, puyol back to rb, Yaya at cb, young inexperienced busquets at cdm, Marquez injured, iniesta and Henry just returned from injury, sylvinho started as abidal was suspended, etc. Never entered their minds

southgate is a very sympathetic man, but i believe he’s a poor manager.
his players are playing at a high level and in better teams than before; he’s coasting off of that instead of actually improving them as a team.
you put southgate at the helm of any premier league team—and he gets fired within six months.
England do have a better young group of players than Italy for now...but who knows if they'll continue to grow and actually reach that potential or if Italy have other young players coming up or late bloomers
I think a lot of the Southgate chat should be more complex. He isn’t a good game manager, that’s very true. He’s too cautious.
But he has also fostered and created an atmosphere than means we have reached our first final in 55 years, where he can sub players in and out and swap systems and sub players off that have barely just come on, and leave players out of squads entirely, all to seemingly very little gripes. Being an outstanding man manager goes a hell of a long way in tournament football. I think Southgate is unlucky to some extent that Italy were so colossally fucking embarrassed in 2018 they turned to an actual good manager :lol
He is not ever going to be a good club manager - but you take this exact squad and keep Big Sam in charge and I don’t think we make the semis and final of the WC/Euros.

Playing the whole tournament in the same stadium, easy group, favorable knockout draws, phantom penalty, super deep squad… these will all have helped mask Southgate’s average game management.
Reaching a final should still be a source of optimism in the end. Nobody is owed a win.

Fuck penalties
And fuck uefa for removing away goals from their competitions from next season. More extra times and penalties, just what we all want

I remember seeing Gareth ask him and Philips, which made me confused when Saka made the walk to the fifth penalty.
it's puzzling because saka was completely out of the game. and he's just a kid.
and taking penalties in training is a bit different than taking it in a euros final with 90k fans.
