Worst thing for me in the end is that the game was practically a carbon copy of the Denmark, with identical mistakes, yet Southgate apparently learned nothing. You can quibble over penalty takers forever, but it should never have got to that point.
England will still definitely be one of the favourites for the world cup. They came into this tournament with their best keeper, best RB and best CB injured; Maguire and Henderson both coming back from injury; Sancho suffering a Bundesliga invisibility curse; and a host of teenagers. Who knows, we might even see Fodog make a positive contribution for once
I just hope that a good media kicking makes Southgate realize how badly he fucked up. He didn't learn from Denmark, but maybe he will for Qatar

By Fergie Go To PostSupposedly Saka first pen in pro football?Surely he took at least one for Arsenal
Oof.
By WJD Go To PostDevastatedUnited's first preseason friendly is in 7 days.
Ready for a big break from football.
This train never stops.
I’m so happy for Chiellini. Came after the last world cup and missed out on Champions League success. Nice that he gets a top level trophy in his cabinet.

This is how I view it as well. Southgate didn't want to take the risk involved with committing players forward and going for the win in extra time. His own conservatism did him in.
By Vini.lad Go To PostSurely he took at least one for Arsenal
I thought he took one in the community shield/carabao cup vs Liverpool but I’m not sure.
England played this tourney like Iceland in 2016, except they have a million times more talent. No controversy with the travel advantage and the more attacking team won, it's a good day for football. Hopefully Southgate will change his plans, because he won't get away with it at the World's
I think it's hard to draw any solid conclusions from penalties. The wisdom of the takers is only ever defined by the result, which is a literal lottery.
Here's hoping that there's plenty of positive/negative talks about England's escapades and that Southgate learns from this. These lads are still young.
By Xpike Go To Postdont worry lads theres still the gold cup to watchWhere can I watch this?
….lads?
By Marston Go To PostI thought he took one in the community shield/carabao cup vs Liverpool but I’m not sure.Just checked it was: Reiss Nelson, Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Cedric Soares and David Luiz and Aubameyang.
Danish league starting next weekend lads. Please be excited for Copenhagen yet again failing despite double the budget of everyone else.

It's not "hard" per se. It's a fool's errand.
I'll happily take criticisms re not changing things earlier in the 2nd half before the goal. But stuff about bringing players on or Saka re penalties are just silly when they were likely planned for heavily in advance. And in theory I don't think they're bad decisions.

By R436 Go To PostI think it's hard to draw any solid conclusions from penalties. The wisdom of the takers is only ever defined by the result, which is a literal lottery. That’s true in general but there was definitely a management strategy that emerged from this particular PK shootout from England, and it was a bet that Southgate lost. I don’t blame the players either.
Also a big hater of PK shootouts. One day someone will realize that we don’t have to do it in the same way someone invented decades ago and progress is an actual thing that exists inshallah.

Lets not use that word.
England played well and it went to penalties. Penalties were close. Only real criticism was choosing Saka as the 5th pen taker.
World Cup in 1 tears time, think these lads might get far again. Southgate has demonstrated that’s he capable of growing and learning from each tournament. It just a a real shame that Italy won it. They already have great footballing accolades. England could’ve really used a win here ! 🙃
